The dog that survived an Alabama dog pound's gas chamber has found a permanent home in New Jersey.

Daniel, a beagle mix named by animal control workers in Alabama after the biblical figure who survived the lion's den, joined four other rescued dogs last Thursday at the home of Joe Dwyer and his family in Nutley, about 10 miles west of New York City.

"He's in extremely good shape, especially in light of what he went through," Dwyer said Wednesday after returning from a trip to the veterinarian. "His attitude is just incredible."

Daniel surprised workers at the Animal Control facility in Florence, Ala., on Oct. 3, the day he was supposed to be put down with several other animals in a stainless-steel box roughly the size of a pickup truck bed that was filled with carbon monoxide.

The dog emerged frightened but unscathed, and was eventually flown to New Jersey by Eleventh Hour Rescue, a nonprofit that saves dogs slated for euthanasia.

The organization received more than 100 requests to adopt Daniel, its president said last month. Dwyer said he and his family had two "meet-and-greets" with Daniel before being approved for adoption.

Dwyer said Daniel has become fast friends with the Nutley family's other four pooches — two dachshunds, a beagle mix and a pit bull mix.

"By Thursday evening they were all lying down together," he said. "It was wonderful to see."

Wow. That's crazy!

Also I can't help but feel sick finding out that they gas them like that. I guess it's good that they didn't try and do it again :S

Kinda sad that dogs get put down but seriously, how is there any other way if people don't adopt them?
People should spay their pets and adopt where possible, everything else will make things worse.

Dog survives gas chamber gets adopted = good

Dogs get the gas chamber = bad

The less you know...?

How did you not know this though?

I didn't know they gassed them. I always thought they used euthanasia.
Gassing is pretty humane. It's standard procedure for lab rats, for example.
CO2 makes animals (and people) sleepy and then they just die in sleep.
If it's good enough for rats, it's good enough for dogs.

Using Carbon Monoxide wouldnt be painful though, the dogs would just feel groggy/drunk then pass out and then die. It sounds harsh though. Everytime I hear a sad dog story I just imagine it happening to mine and it makes it even worse. Im glad it turned out for the better for this particular one.

Isn't euthanasia a term meaning "mercy killing". Which still does not explain how you thought pound dogs were killed.

CO is painless. Putting animals down is sad and I wish it didn't happen, but CO is one of the better ways to do it.

that aside

ASGSAJFDKLAFAGHSA A beagle gets me everytime sooooo cute aaaaa

I thought they used gas mask or something. I guess I was also thinking about Carbon Dioxide and not Monoxide, which I'm guessing would be worse.

Also do certain states have a problem with higher kill pounds? In the DC Metro area they are always bringing in a shit load of animals from West Virginia that were in High Kill Pounds.

When I lived in Nepal they used to feed the stray dogs to the Lions and Tigers in the circus and zoo. Thought that was genius, they should do that here too, would save a lot of money on food.

Oh boy, gas chambers!

I predict Godwin's Law within five pages.

This is why it's a good idea to have your pets spayed and neutered in order to keep down on the stray and unwanted animal population.

Glad it survived AND found a home.

Hopefully some of those people that wanted to adopt it and couldn't will now adopt and save some other dogs that are scheduled to be euthanized.

Better to get gassed with CO2 than with something that causes pain. At least they just die peacefully in their sleep.
