Okay so I wanna know how this works.

"I am sorry dear CEO, I have shamed you and stained your company's honor. I submit my resignation in order that you may still love my worthless being"

?? Or was it more like management called him into office, and gave him a choice to either voluntarily resign, or get fired?

AFAIK, resigning means you opt for a nice severance package as a settlement from your employer, assuming they offered one .. probably a couple of years worth of pay.
Resigning means you cannot claim unemployment from the state. Corporations prefer severance so they don't have to increase their contributions to unemployment insurance taxes, which could mean a percentage increase over the entire number of their workforce ... thus very costly.

As mad as I am at what Microsoft is doing (so mad, I refuse to buy an Xbox One, even if they reverse course, because they'll take the next chance they get to screw consumers again), I have no delusions that the console won't sell like crazy. There are the Xbox fanboys, the techies, and the casuals who are going to see that they can wave their hands at their TV to start a Skype call (nevermind that it shrinks the main screen image down to about 1/3 its normal size).

People are generally gullible, and Microsoft is nothing if not persistent when it comes to pushing their crap onto the public.

strong 2005/2006 Sony vibes from MS. dat hubris
This is exactly what I am getting too, but even more so in that MS is pushing harder for their own future agenda where SONY's whole cell initiative and connectivity with their TV's was more of a vision or whatever. MS's seems way more devious.

plenty of MS products have failed despite lots of marketing. The kinect sold a bunch and it was a broken piece of shit that doesnt even work right most of the time though.

It bugs me that out of all the people ranting about how awful these decisions are from MS about the Xbone there are only a handful or less of people defending this. Sure gives off a strong vibe of PR people, i'm not one to usually insinuate this but man NervousXtian and a few others sure are defending this debacle from MS hard as hell.

In this instance i feel like any true gamer would be aghast at these anti-consumer policies from Microsoft, how can anyone defend this?

Never attribute to evil what can be explained by stupidity. Or something.

Don't know if these have been posted yet: http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-has-alienated-us-troops-with-always-online-xbox-one-2013-6

We decided to talk to a few Marines, Sailors, and Soldiers about what this will mean for gaming in the military. It's worth noting the military is comprised mostly of males, ages 18 - 35, the key demographic for video games.

"I predict a major shift to PlayStation Marine Corps-wide," said a former Marine who's done two tours aboard a carrier strike group at sea and who has beta-tested games for various companies. "Xbox is going to tank in the military."

...

"Xbox was the previous favorite," the Marine said. "'Halo' has always been an essential team LAN game aboard ship. It was almost a standard. Lots of people had it so easy to link Xboxes for 4 on 4," said the Marine. "Xbox was king of social gaming aboard ship."

...

A group of gaming Marines, Soldiers and Sailors broke down some numbers for us, and it turns out that somewhere around 25 to 30,000 troops do duty aboard ship at any given moment. Another Navy Sailor pointed out to us that there's at least 6 to 7,000 troops aboard those submarines Mattrick so flippantly referenced. Not to mention the majority of the stateside military living in barracks rooms, where random room changes occur regularly.

Counting the Coast Guard, the number of active duty military, most of which lives in barracks housing, rests at around 1.4 million. That's a lot of units sold or not sold — [take our POLL] — even more of a reason Mattrick might want to step tenderly around the subject of uniformed members.

We contacted Microsoft for a statement about Mattrick's punchline and its implications. In specific, we wanted to know if there was any consideration at all for troops serving in austere conditions.

This was the Microsoft response we recieved:

“With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection. Although we’re very excited about Xbox One, we remain dedicated to Xbox 360 now and for years to come. In fact, we are expecting some of the greatest blockbusters of 2013 and 2014 to come out on Xbox 360 such as ‘Grand Theft Auto V,’ ‘Call of Duty: Ghosts,’ ‘Madden NFL 25’ and ‘FIFA 14.’”

And: http://gamasutra.com/blogs/JayJohns...s_Ive_had_and_heard_on_my_last_deployment.php

For almost eight years I have served my country in the United States Navy. Initially, I enlisted as an Operations Specialist, but after two years I was picked up for a commissioning program and the Naval Aviation training pipeline to become a Naval Flight Officer (NFO – think Goose from TOPGUN, but a different aircraft). In that time I’ve served on three Nimitz class Aircraft Carriers, been on two combat deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in Afghanistan, and been on countless other detachments away from home for training and exercises. In the last two and a half years I have either been deployed or detached for a total of 18 months. From these experiences I would like to impart to you conversations that I have either been a part of or witnessed during my time away from home.

...

Their surprising decision to require the Xbox One to receive a message from the “mother ship” every 24 hours has already been lighting up the internet for a myriad of reasons. But, the reason that I am so infuriated about it is that I, and my brothers and sisters in arms, will not ever be able to play Xbox One when deployed or on detachment...Microsoft has single handedly alienated the entire military, and not just the U.S. military, the militaries of the entire world.

...

This next point is for the developers. Although the PS4 will not have an online requirement to run, developers will still be able to make games that require persistent online authentication. Do not do this to us. The video game industry has made a fortune breaking not just video game records, but entertainment records as a whole, with properties that simulate what my brothers, sisters, and I do on a daily basis. Don’t alienate us with online requirements for games. It will cost you money and respect. This is a lesson that Microsoft is, tragically, about to learn.

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
Thanks for those articles and they're yet another good and valid reason why MS policies on the Xbone suck. Didn't MS issue a statement though that they're going to make certain exceptions with military, like "special" Xbone units that will work offline for them? Anyways, from the response they received that doesn't seem to be the case after all.

Not sure in the end how anyone can defend Xbone. Disaster all around.

I really really can not wait when Xbone is going to sink. And i mean they need to wake up and stop wearing those tinted pink glasses. The damage they are doing is unbelievable and it will show when those consoles are both in sale but pre orders are speaking volumes at the moment.

The military not being able to use the Xbox 1 is more bad press than bad numbers. The number is big, but not change your design big.

But from what people on gaf have said, some 30% to 40% of xbox 360s have never been online either. That's a gigantic number. Why would MS make this decision when they know these numbers themselves? You dont just make a move that loses you 30% to 40% of your previous customers.

This mandatory online decision is starting to become more weird the more I think about it.

I haven't ventured into this thread since it first popped up. I didn't realize this was spreading into the mainstream. To be a fly on the wall in a MS executive meeting.

The revenues they are expecting to make from Online-only gamers will make up the shortfall from the revenue they lose from people who can't go online. It's either that or they don't care how much they lose as long as the XBone became the dominant box under the TV.

New Xbox 'a sin against all service members'

the tweet and headline, i'm in shock its even getting this much press play.
Holy crap:

With tours aboard three Nimitz aircraft carriers, Johnson says he’s spent more than half of the past three years deployed or training at sea. He describes gaming in general and his Xbox in particular as “my sanctuary. It is where I went to calm down after a long day of flying.”

But that won’t true with the Xbox One, he says.

“No longer will the sounds of Master Chief saving the human race echo through the hallowed halls of the USS Abraham Lincoln, or any other USS ship, when we have a few hours respite. No longer will you see Marcus and Dom sawing through the Locust Horde at the bases in Afghanistan after the Marines have returned from patrol and want to escape their reality for a bit. Those days are now firmly behind us.”

Microsoft: Sucks to be you

...

“This is shameful, says Joel Hruska, a writer for Extreme Tech website. “Telling troops that you ‘empathize’ with them is both embarrassing and hands Sony perfect ammunition.”

“Do I think Microsoft is going to change?” writes Hruska in a recent post. “Honestly, no. The remarks that’ve come out to date paint a picture of a company that’s so drunk on its own Kool-Aid, they aren’t listening to outside criticism or commentary any longer.”
The hits keep on coming. I don't expect it to let up anytime soon.

Ms came out a few weeks ago and said they would give exemptions to the 24 hr check to service people.

They just suck at PR and timely information -probably because it is early and plans are still being finalized.

I have no doubt they will come out with a Press release eventually outline offline functions for military and possibly hardship cases, they would be stupid not too

Wow.

Wonder if she'll have this on her show. Xbox just got talked about on Daily Show too.

Probably will, the whole NSA and PRISM part synchronizes pretty nicely into the whole issue, in fact the whole 'requires kinect to function' part might have some severe repercussions alone for Military usage given it will always be watching them.

It's funny because the time when your internet is down is usually a prime time to play games.

Lol, so true. The thought never occurred to me.

In regards to the military aspect,

I was in the navy for 8 years and yes, videogames are a huge way to pass the time, especially when you're deployed. Single military members have a massive disposable income, especially when they make rank. I used to buy games in Singapore 2 or 3 at a time each time I got paid. Hell, I bought Panzer Dragoon Saga for $300 and didn't even blink, ha.. It's really foolish for MS to be so closed minded about their customer base.

Unfortunately Sony hasn't won anything as tons and tons of people are saying they're going to buy the XBone because it "doesn't affect" them, which is completely understandable

That and people interested in the many (and good exclusives) means people will still buy it

Until they try to play their games years from now, at which point they find out MS shut down the servers and I proceed to laugh.

It affects everyone in some form and anyone who says different hasn't really looked into it properly.

You mean that shit EA does regularly and no one cares cause a better version came out?

Thats true but even so, right now, when i turn on my xbox and lets say live is down, i dont even bother playing anything. I just turn it off as if it doesn't work. I do this every time without really noticing. It works offline fine, but when i cant access live its as if its useless. And im sure im not the only one who does this.

Interesting and true for some people i guess. I am not someone who plays online so i dont do that. I literally play offline 95% of the time.

A problem that hasn't really been discussed about the Xbox One is what happens when a game goes out of print? You have the choice to buy a digital copy i guess but i cant see digital copies are going to be all that cheap

If MS comes out and makes a special case for the Military to not have to connect every 24hrs to the mothership, that will set a precedent. And that is not a good thing for MS. (should have used Precedent then Precedence ^_^)

When in doubt, do like Steam. Its a gamble no doubt. When they went with Ethernet only, they annihilated a lot of people then too. Lot of people thought it sucks, but we all got used to it.

It sucks but i dont see them changing anything other than little things. The console was designed this way, for better or for worse. Its too late for them to back out now.

There are a few things that people have not thought of that "could" happen if things continue to go the way they are.

1. Games will not sell as well on Xbox One because of less users.
2. Users that buy games might end up not having many people to play against.
3. 3rd party games will stop being made (or less of them) because games do not sell well on the system.

So, it will affect them at some point if MS continues to go down the path they are going.
