Don Mattrick "We're over-delivering value"

This is why I think that, despite how fucked up it is, the XBone will sell more than people think. MS has done a very good job of locking people into the LIVE ecosystem over the past gen with friend lists/achievements/gamerscores. A surprising number of people will be willing to overlook the console's flaws in order to keep their profile.

PS3 didn't even get gamer level until a few years in. No one cares about it.

Shoot your favorite buddies on xbl a message saying you are headed to PSN and drop them your nickname.

It's just as mind boggling as the fact that you didn't bold "kinect" as well. :p

What I wonder is, if Don really believes that himself or if it's just PR talk.

I would've bolded kinect if the first one didn't sell a bazillion units. The rest of that shit is either super accessible on mobile devices/PC, or nobody gives a shit about it(smartglass).

If a company had a product that brought thousands of dollars worth of value to the consumer, they would charge thousands of dollars for it.

This reminds me of those charts Sony made out of desperation when the PS3 first came out to show that the PS3 was a better value than the 360. Pure desperation.

eh, ps3 actually was a better value even at $599 if you factor in free online, blu-ray player, rechargeable controllers, etc.

Exactly. A lot of people could see it then, and a lot of people see it now. I guess the inertia of corporate group think keeps them from seeing that they are making the mistakes, that helped them win in console sales last gen. TBH I think it was Sony's mistakes, late start and lack of games at the start that put them forever behind last gen, not how amazing 360 was.

Yeah, they think they can just ride this out and continue on without changing any policies. And it's still up to enthusiast gamers to tell their casual gamer friends why it's bad, because right now, they don't give a good goddamn. All they want is the big-budget games on whatever platform all their friends are playing on. And unless Xbox One is shown to more than just serious gamers what XB1's policies mean for their gaming, Microsoft will be right. From their perspective, all they had to do was wait out the neckbeards.

Just my humble opinion. I'm looking forward to the xbox one and I think the system IS delivering some potentially awesome experiences. I have no idea about the value aspect because I have no clue about what the doo dads cost within the machine. What I do know is that I am very excited for the voice controls, tv stuff, and nfl integration. Yes, I am one of the heathens that does not care about the drm and used game stuff. I think 500 bucks is a good price for what they are delivering.

The thing is, I bought the 360 and ps3 in my late twenties. I am now in my mid thirties. Xbox one is appealing to the older gamer in me. As I get older, games are becoming less important for me and watching tv/sports and having other cool shit to play around with is becoming more important.

I also think when customers see the displays/kiosks in the store for Xbox One and PS4, they are going to see what the machine can do, not what it's taking away from you. I feel that MS' list of "can do's" is going to dwarf the PS4's list. Now, if Sony wants to go the marketing route of "Look what our competition is taking away from you.", I don't know if that's the best thing to do. It works in gaming forums and E3 where the majority of people are gamers and are really passionate about these issues, but will the general public really care about the drm/used game/internet functions when Apple/Kindle/phones function in a similar fashion? I don't know.

I'll end this post like this: I'm buying a PS4 for MLB the Show. The PS3 is/was my official MLB the Show box. But I have absolutely no excitement, besides graphics, for what the PS4 is doing for gaming. With MS, I see them trying to do something different. I see things like Illumiroom and neat Kinect stuff. I like the tv and sports stuff. I think the cloud shit sounds neat. I like new tech and seeing new ideas. Since this IS a luxury item, I don't mind a company breaking a few eggs to try new things.

It's all about perceived value. There aren't as many payfor walls blocking consumers from content. The initial cost of entry for those devices (Kindle, iPad etc.) is high, but once your in the price of software is dirt cheap. I think the most I've ever paid for anything on my phone, software wise, was maybe 4 dollars if that. Hell half of the time the shits free. None of that comes with 24 hour check in/lock outs. Your asking a lot from consumers to pay for games at current market prices, while giving up ownership of games, AND big brother is watching you from behind.

From what Microsoft has shown us in the past, with regards to AAA title pricing, till now you won't be getting the same deep discounts like other digital services, and the same goes for hiding media apps like Netflix behind a payfor wall. You could still have all the features they're suggesting without all the DRM hassle they're asking consumers to put up with. I can understand that they wanna make money, but it won't and shouldn't come and consumer freedom and expense.

I don't think we've seen the big show yet when it comes to consumer black lash. People tend to respond when you fuck with their money (used games).
