Donkey Kong Country Vs. Diddys Conquest

You'll laugh, but I won't watch your videos because I've never played DKC2 in my life and I don't want to spoil myself by listening to the music. (I finished DKC one month ago and it was glorious)

And I brought up Aquatic Ambience because this track is a 10/10 for me and it's hard to believe that DKC2 will top the soundtrack of the first game.

Oh boy! Your life will change really soon.

Get your ass off GAF and play DKC2

DKC2? It's like the bestest game ever. Much more playful than the first one, more creative enviroments, fun animals, better graphics. Best Game with "Donkey Kong" in its title ever.
Retro's attempts suck.

OP just made me realize that Kong Quest reads as Conquest

DKC2 wins this fight easily. Don't get me wrong - DKC is good and will always hold a special place in my heart, but DKC2 is simply a much better package. I also consider it the best platformer on SNES, along with Super Mario World.

get ready to not only eat your own hat, but your house and everything inside of it too.

Haha, unfortunately I don't know when I'll be able to play this game because I hesitate to buy the 50hz version of this gem.

But I can wait I guess. (we talked about this crap in the 60hz thread)

2 > 1 > 3

Although I did not play much of 3 to form an opinion of it.

2 is one of my favourite games of all time.

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze > Donkey Kong Country 2 > Donkey Kong Country Returns > Donkey Kong Country 3 >>> Donkey Kong Country

Alot of people put Super Mario World up on this pedestal with DCK2 as well, but I dunno... I dont even think Super Mario World is the best Super Mario World game on the SNES.

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze > Donkey Kong Country 2 > Donkey Kong Country Returns > Donkey Kong Country 3 >>> Donkey Kong Country

Tropical Freeze (total package of gameplay+aesthetics) > Returns (stellar gameplay but lacking aesthetics relative to DKC2) = DKC2 (stellar aesthetics but lacking in gameplay relative to Returns) >>> DKC3 >>>>> DKC1

Yoshi's Island is better. One of the finest platformers of all time.

I want to love YI but the 100 point system for completing each level is so fucking overboard

Not the biggest fan of any of the games in the original DKC trilogy, but 2 is definitely the best of lot in my opinion. Tropical Freeze is by far the best in the series though.

I can't place Donkey Kong Country Returns above Donkey Kong Country 2 until we get a HD Remaster with no waggle controls and a soundtrack re-done by DAVID WISE.

DKC2 is far and away the best of the original trilogy. It's not even close. DKC2 is such a MASSIVE improvement over DKC1 in absolutely every way.

EDIT: Yeah gonna overall agree with the above list. DKCTF > DKC2=DKCR > DKC3 > DKC1

SMW is insanely charming and it also helps that every different world feels so different from each other. It's a cliche when talking about it, but it really feels like you're on an adventure.

but man, that already exists....well, unfortunately the soundtrack is still the same:

you can play it via Dolphin in full native 1080p and map the waggle shit to a button on your controller.

I feel like a total outlier when I say that the waggle didn't bother me at all. 100%'d the game multiple times with it and never had trouble. True, it isn't as precise as a button, but DKCR isn't a pixel-precise game anyway.

Music is pretty ass for a DKC game but I feel the gameplay and level design stomps DKC2's, just as DKC2's music and presentation stomps Returns'. They kind of complete each other in a weird way, and the result is Tropical Freeze.

DKC3 is great. Still has this weirdly melancholic atmosphere which I love about the DKC games even though it's a very colorful game.

But yeah, nothing tops DKC2. I was so incredibly fascinated with the gloominess, the music, the atmosphere. And when you first enter the Lost World holy shit what is this?

I personally dislike the Retro Studios DKC games in almost every way. I find them frustrating, tedious and they have some absolutely ridiculous design decisions.

Sorry, GAF.

Don't need to. I don't like them. I bought them both on release and finished them, and I have absolutely no desire to ever play either again. On the other hand, I play through DKC2 at least every other week (only takes me an hour to finish it from start to end), and I have been playing it reguarly since 1995. It never, ever gets old for me - just like Super Mario Bros.

DKCR and DKCTF got old for me very, very quickly.

I do not disagree with you. This is the innate problem when saying another game is better than a great game. People will think you mean that great game sucks. I love SMW, I just feel SMW2 and DKC2 stand alone at the top of snes platforms. SMW is still amazing.

I mean special world? "Groovy Tubular Etc" Loved it!

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who genuinely really likes DKCR's OST. Yeah it doesn't hold a candle to David Wise's scores but I felt it was good enough.

For what it's worth, I actually think Tiki Tong Terror is the best final boss music in the series. I like Gangplank Galleon and Volcano Dome but that kind of heavy metal isn't my thing. (I say this while jamming to Big Top Bop and Punch Bowl. Weird how it works.) Crocodile Cacophony is pretty great though I still prefer Tiki Tong Terror since it left more of an impression on me. I don't even remember DKC3's final boss theme.

Juuuuuuuuuuuuuust me, though. :B

Retro's take on the buddy system (or lack there of) has always bugged me.

Yep. I don't like playing as Donkey Kong. He's slow, cumbersome and a pain in the ass to control in both DKC1 and the retro titles.

In DKC2, I have two quick and agile characters who are a joy to control and allow me to run through levels at whatever pace I like.

It had its moments. The rocket barrel themes, Feather Fiend, the Sloppy Sands tower theme, etc. Though I think it's tremendously underwhelming on the whole.

Yeah both games were utter failures to recapture the magic, and what made the originals so special.

You know, I thought I'd think that way, going into Returns and Tropical Freeze, but I absolutely love the way Donkey Kong handles in Retro's games. Speedy but powerful, weighty yet graceful. Best-controlling, best-feeling platforming protagonist ever.

Agreed. DKC2 is my favorite but the way they made DK control in the Retro games version is truly impressive

it helps that you can quite literally launch DK across the screen like a cannonball at a moment's notice

the greatest platforming mechanic in history

Admittedly DKCR was my gateway to the series so I came into it without any expectations or prior experience with the Rare trilogy. I know I really liked (still like) some of the tracks, including the remixes. After playing the trilogy, particularly DKC2, yeah I get why it's underwhelming now. Still holds a more sentimental value to me because it was my first DKC experience and I associate its music to that, though, as weird as that is.

It's not even just that, Diddy was fast, but he couldn't take on the Krushas and Klumps, that's where DK would come in. They both had strengths and weaknesses and created an interesting dynamic which is missing with Retro's Diddy who basically amounts to a glorified hover power-up.

Donkey Kong Country easily for me, one of my favorite games of all time.
DKC 2 just never clicked for me, it always irked me how they pushed Donkey Kong away from his own series, yes it's pretty silly :P

Yep! No need to walk ever.

Why would you walk? Oh yeah, to use the god-awful blowing mechanic to sniff out all the poorly hidden secrets in DKCR. Shudder.

Either way, in DKC2 I can roll off a platform with diddy, perform a jump in midair, cancel it halfway through, change direction and then land where I aimed to be, back in the direction I was facing - all in one single move, with absolute ease and precision. Retro's titles do not offer anything even near that level of control.
