LOL I'm an idiot for my belief? Only idiot here is you moron.

Just to make sure everyone knows, I have nothing against gay people, I have friends who are gay but they know what my stance is on the subject.

You're an idiot because you have a "belief" and will continue to "believe" it no matter how many gay people tell you what they know from actual experience. It's not an opinion you can have. It's a distorted fictional reality that you cling to.

Wow that's a terrible insult. How bout "You fucking nerd". But I don't think nerd is really that insulting anymore these days is it? Hrmmmm

Are gay people actually offended by "that's so gay" anyway? I doubt it.

My friend is. It'd upset him, even though the actual initial meaning of the phrase has lost all it's original meaning to me whenever I'd say it.

I don't care what anyone say, being gay is a choice not something you are born with. You don't get to choose to be White, Black, Chinese, Japanese, African or Mexican. God didn't put 2 men on earth and said "Hey it's ok if you sleep with each other".

If you're gunna troll. You gotta be a bit more subtle.

and one last thing

i believe gay means happy
I always though that was what saying "thats totally gay" referenced, as in its something cheesy and lame like the original use of the word "gay" which is now stuck in a time warp of cheesy looking old TV shows and movies.

Judging by some of the replies, is like a few might have missed the "Not say 'That's so gay"..ads featuring Hilary Duff and Wanda Sykes...there's even a thread about them in the OT Forum.

The Hilary one was quite funny..
They are just asking people to stop using the word 'gay' as an offensive adjective.

Then again, Penny Arcade's comic sums it up pretty nicely.. :p

XBL & PSNput limits on the number of friends you can have, but not on the number of games, so i think that ad is a little unfair

Yes. Some are. Perpetuating negative associations with their sexual preference is not a positive thing, I suspect.

Oh snap, I have tasted my own medicine and it is bitter.

Damn, he got you good! :lol

As for this ad campaign, it's retarded. Wait, I didn't mean "retarded" in a derogatory sense, that would be mean to retarded people. I'm such a bastard for using the word. Wait, I can't use bastard in a derogatory sense! That would be mean to bastards!

What phrases can we use, pray tell? I'll have to ask Hilary Duff, just to be sure!

With gay marriage being outlawed in state after state you'd think there would be better and more worthy ways to spend advertising dollars. But I guess not.

I don't understand the point of the campaign either. Why are they equating gayness with committing a social faux pas or being an introverted hobbyist? Is THAT really a good idea?

because gamers use "that's gay", "you're a fag", etc on voice chat. The ad campaign is turning the tables by saying "You're introverted blowhards with no friends. Feels bad doesn't it? So don't do it to other people."

The-Warning said:

This topic was seriously just in the OT days ago. Yes, it is a problem because it equates being gay with negative feelings and perpetuates the sort of subconscious idea that being gay is something bad, something negative, something other than normal. Is it the most offensive and worst thing ever? No. Should people who aren't homophobic and have the vocabulary to do so stop saying it? Yeah, it would be nice.

I'm nto going to get into this because it would be pointless to argue with an idiot much like yourself. But I'm only going to say that a child isn't born gay, a child wouldn't know anything about having sex with the same sex. Whether you want to believe it or not being gay is a lifestyle.

This just shows me how arrogant you are. I don't have a choice. I fancy men and not woman and theres not a damn thing I can do about it. If god didn't want this to happen they why does he make people have these feelings?

Sexual attraction at it's base form is caused by hormones; is it really outlandish to think that some people were simply born with 'wrong' (I hesitate to use the word 'wrong', not trying to insinuate it's actually wrong in any way) quanities of hormones?

Wait, are we advocating censorship now?

Ugh, what's the point of having free speech if we just censor what we don't want to hear?

There's already censorship in online games...

That is undoubtedly what this ad campaign is trying to do. Trying and failing hilariously, of course.

This ad fails at analogies.

"Gay" is not inherently insulting. It can be used an insult, sure, but "gay" used in its normal sense is not an insult.

"Gamer guy who has more video games than friends" is an insult.

Following this ad's logic, "Gay" and "gamer stereotype insult" are to be equated; therefore, we can assume that "gay" is something inherently negative, just "you're agamer with few friends" is inherently negative.

Just not very well thought out.

The problem may be that these ads are toothless. They are replacing gay with long sentences that are supposed to be offensive but aren't entirely untrue. A lot of jocks are dumb, I have more games than friends, etc.

They should run them again but replace the word gay with really offensive ethnic slurs. It may not work but it's more likely to make someone say "huh, is it actually that offensive to people?"

Hoooly shit I thought you were being ironic before.
*mind blown*

Do you also believe the Earth is flat?

They don't need to be offended. Other people have to be offended for them. My high school econ teacher once asked me if a video we had watched offened me (two economist used a hypothetical example of a poor black man in Alabama getting into the whole "toxic loan" thing for a house) and I replied no, "despite" being black my self. She proceeded to tell me that she was "offeneded for me" whatever that meant.

Dude, the Earth is flat! I went boating on a big lake, and the horizon didn't curve, it just was flat! Clearly the Earth is flat as a result.

That's some "Utah-science" for you right there :lol

It's kind of like "praying for you." The extreme leftist fools are very much like the extreme right wing fools. They both are self-righteous, they both want to impose their values on everyone else, and they both think they are infinitely superior to their counterparts on the other side of the spectrum.

Alright. I agree I think it's one of those expressions that is becoming so common that it is losing it's power.

Those "omg being gay is a choice" people really baffle me. How the hell are you supposed to be able to choose what you're attracted to? It's as impossible as being able to decide, say, what kinds of food you like and don't like. How are they trying to substantiate this ridiculous claim anyway?

this add sucks it hurts my eyes ... peoble need to learn how to make good ads or just stop making shity ones instead. kthxbye

It's funny that gay has 'settled' on homosexual, it's meant to mean jovial. I can understand people being offended by it, but if the meaning of a word is purely what people mean when they say it generally, there is no reason gay shouldn't be used to mean bad/wrong or whatever.

If the word can change meaning based on use once, there is no reason that can't happen again. It's not a phrase I use, and it's certainly not witty as a good put down should be, but the nature of language is far too complicated to just say you can't use the phrase because it's offensive.

You're right, when I was young I didn't know what it was that made me feel different from all my friends. I didn't know why they could talk about their attractions to people of the opposite gender and I felt nothing. I felt bored. I wanted to go do something else. I didn't know why I had my first kiss and felt nothing at all. I didn't know what was wrong with me. I didn't know why I watched TV and always felt drawn to characters of the same gender.

"Oh, you're normal," I said to myself. "You just wish you were like them. You want to be friends with someone like that. That's all, that's perfectly normal." You're right, many young people don't know why they feel different and unwanted and like they'll never be okay. They don't know why the words fag, dyke, and queer are frightening in how familiar what's being described feels. They don't know why "that's so gay" sounds like an accusation directed right at them. But then they meet the right person and they hopefully figure it out; that is if they're not one of the many that kill themselves first.

Being gay is much of a "lifestyle" as being left-handed. Whether or not it's nature or nurture, it's a part of you causing harm to no one, so why the hell do you care?

I'm out. This thread is already way worse than the one in OT.

Hoooooooly shit! There is one unabashedly, raging bat shit insane member of Gaf in here! You are blowing my fucking mind right now.

The point is to not use it with negative connotations. You call gay people gay. You don't call something you find stupid gay.

Children wouldn't know anything about having sex with the opposite sex, either. Why are you acting like you're the absolute authority on gay behavior, despite the fact that you yourself are not gay? Stop that. :P

Did you read the post you quoted?

My point was the word gay has been 'hijacked' once already, the meaning has completely changed, and if people want to change that meaning again, who is anyone to stop them?

Nah it's easier to read ignorance in 2 pages.. :p ..
Both Gay-topics/threads and NPD-threads bring the most interesting people, so it's easier at 50 replies per page. :p

It shouldn't be that hard to understand really. If it's all a choice, you could challenge yourself to "get attracted to the other sex" for a week or two. It would quickly become clear you don't decide what makes your dick go up. Also, nobody can ever remember at what point they "made the decision to be straight/gay". And also, why would people choose to live a life that's more difficult and full of discrimination and might even result in death if you're in the wrong place.

It's astonishing to see people still spout bullshit like Rottweiler. It's just willfully being ignorant.

I suspect that too. I always cringe when some white people make a big deal out of possible anti-black racial bias or slurs while black people are like meh and handle the situation more reasonably. It's embarrassing. But I think that's part of the whole white guilt thing.

This print ad is much worse than the tv ones. Not that either is going to change people's mind on using it, however this one attacks an entire group of people based on a old stereotype. As infective as the tv ads are, at least their 'witty' comebacks are directed solely at the person saying 'that's teh gay'.

I think some people say even if you have thoes urges, you don't have to act on them. Like the whole pedophilia and getting into all of that junk. There are a lot of things people are naturally attracted to and naturally want to do. Whether it's as basic as the need for food or much more pschological like attraction. Even the earliest societies have laws that "restrain" these wants, which make things like stealing and murder illegal, even though at times we've all felt like doing one or the other.

Of course, I'm not equating homosexuality with pedophilia or murder or anything like that. I'm just trying to answer your question they way some of those people would.
