DOOM for Nintendo Switch, First Direct-Feed Screenshots

ITT: The beloved 'Nintendo Tax'. Paying full price for nerfed versions of old games that can be had for 20 bucks. Then folks twist themselves into pretzels to convince themselves they're getting a deal.

ITT: Doom fans looking forward to a portable version of one of the best shooters and games of this gen.

It's not about keeping up with consoles, it'd be more about having a sort of soft relaunch every now and then. Just look at Samsung and Apple, they push a hardware revision every year, and eventually cut off older hardware from compatibility.

I think a slower refresh every 2 or 3 year works better for a console hybrid.

I seriously hope apple/samsung is not the precedent they follow at all.
Phones are far more diverse and evolve with far less function critical features per year.
This is more akin to newer phones supporting newer network bands every 2 years
games arent some secondary thing on the switch that id be okay losing out on had my old iphone not been capable of running newer iphone games.

Why do people think that just because games are a year old on other systems and cheaper they should automatically be cheaper when a new version is made?

Was it free to develop this new version?

Do people not understand how companies like to make money?

Are you being forced to buy this at launch for Switch and not wait for a similar price in Switch in a year as the other versions?

I'm not saying you're wrong. From a graphical standpoint, objectively, the game looks worse and is coming out a year and a bit later than the other versions, but the whole Nintendo Tax thing is definitely different now that the system is an SoC running on ARM portable hardware.

If you look at it that way there is a big difference between this and the shitty Mass effect/Arkham Asylum support the Wii U got, so I'd argue that this is progress for sure.

Yeah I don't agree with this at all.

If a game is exclusive to one system or another because they chose to do that then thats their problem. Like nobody forced Tomb Raider to be locked up to one system for a year. Then when the game is regularly $30 or less on one system don't be surprised when people aren't going to pay full retail price for the game a full year later.

Not quite the same thing with Switch obviously because its a new platform but personally have little interest in these late ports because I've already played them elsewhere and yeah, because they're cheaper on other systems I already own.

Lol why is this the first post I see upon entering the topic? Your mind must have been twisting itself to make this post, Lmao.

The models and textures look really good. But it seems like it comes at the cost of a lower frame rate.

It's a portable version of one of the best games ever, and it looks and plays great according to every game journalist who went hands-on with it at Bethesda's media event.

Yeah, but a lot of people see value in portability and the cartridges that come with it. PC players have been dealing with this for over a decade. Just because i can buy it for 7 bucks on one platform doesn't eliminate the value of another platform.

Wait this is weird to me. The article is dated September 21, like two weeks ago. Did everyone just miss these when they were first released?

Is DOOM scary to play?

You're litterally a machine of death on legs. It's the demons that should be afraid of you.

Btw, those screenshots seem to have a lot of chromatic aberration, which i saw it can be disabled in the switch video options. I would be curious to see it without, it's always one of the first option i uncheck in every PC games.

Switch uses ARM not x86 arch.

Thanks for the correction, I assumed that as an Nvidia product that had such great compatability with basically all current development tools that it had to be x86.

I suspect the further down the life of the Switch we get the more it becomes apparent that this is Nintendo's best overall hardware product of at least the last several decades, if not of all time. It's competitive tech relative to form factor, it doesn't restrict developers with archaic or abstract design, and it doesn't have any random high dollar features that distract from a very appealing concept.

These later ports aren't going to disappear after the first month or something. Sure, I've played DOOM on my PS4 but if this is available for say, $20 sometime next year I might decide to grab it. Same with Skyrim (though I'd probably splurge and pay $30 there as I went through it pre-DLC).

These games aren't going to be $50-$60 for all time. They'll launch at an MSRP likely intended for those who are either huge fans of the game or who haven't had the opportunity to play it elsewhere, then rapidly head down to roughly the same value pricing as the other versions in an attempt to maximize sales.

I like how there was no real prompt for this post. Dude just jumps in ready to be obnoxious for no real reason

Considering the hardware, this looks pretty dang good. Kind of like that Doom port on the Jaguar or Quake running on the Saturn.

Their favorite logo on the console.

Yep. Nothing more to add, i wouldn't bother by the negative comments, they always come from the same people. I played this game on PC with all the settings at maximum and can't wait to play this game again at the lunch time, it looks great.

My assumption is that of these are docked, they're compressed pics or something, too small for any native output.

Taking away the blue, this is like the best looking switch game to date. Or has the possibility to be.

Yeah these are Bethesda games, being helped with Nintendo publishing, so maybe add another month to the usual Bethesda 60days to price drop.

There is nothing here to force early adopters if they don't want to. I fully expect to be able to buy both of these games for sub $30 at retail by or after Christmas.

To think.. we went from this:

This is a handheld generational leap? at least 2 handheld generations... PEople are crazy if they are not impressed! this is a HANDHELD GAME!

That's actually why it's not x86. Very few companies have a license for it, an Nvidia is not one.

Well, that, and ARM was better for the product they were designing anyway.

that anti aliasing of id tech 666 is awesome. i wish they would explain it to nintendo haha!

Haha, you jest, but seriously speaking; With all the incredible feats we've seen Nintendo achieve on very limited hardware, I'm sure their choice of no/minor AA solution is purely...umm...choice! Most Nintendo games run at 60fps w/v-sync(and usually a 'set' resolution)... limited/no AA is more of a convenient way to direct that performance to areas that matter more to their games, than it is incompetence.

Comparing 3DS and Switch is always misleading because of the different form factors of the two devices.
Also the fact that companies like Nintendo can now take advantage of the gigantic mobile market.

Ignoring the fact Killzone/Vita are nowhere close to Doom/Switch....

Killzone is an exclusive tailor made to the platform whereas Doom is a (down)port.

Something like Borderlands 2 or Resident Evil Revelations 2 are probably better comparisons.

Honestly the form factor is the biggest reason why I just don't take Switch anywhere unless it's a longer-term trip. Putting it in anything without a case just feels reckless, and even if I had a case the thing takes up far more space and runs out of battery much quicker than my 3DS (be it the old XL or the new one) or Vita.

Tegra X1 is a mobile variant of the common Nvidia Maxwell architecture. Not sure what kind of secret sauce there is supposed to be left. Porting games shouldn't leave "unused" computing power especially not if we are talking about id Software

Vita had hardware that was used in the most popular mobile phones in the world but exclusives still look and perform better than ports.

Vita ran a bunch of PS2 games subnatively for christ sake.

Doom isn't being ported by id.
