Doom: The Dark Ages |OT| Mod City

Anyone tried the Ripatorium update? Looks really cool, and something they can expand on maybe with leaderboards. Kind of like a horde mode in Gears. Its pretty much what I was hoping for, in the absence of any multiplayer. Would be even cooler if you could team up for the ripatorium, co op.

There's an 1 hour trial on PSN premium now, I gave it a try on the pro and it felt quite nice to play. Once you remove film grain, image quality is also superb. I think I might get it once it drops in the 40-45 euro range which shouldn't be too long now.

I cleared it 100 % on ultra violence, and watching some gameplay on nightmare makes me want to try that. And see if I can clear the game on that level. Wouldnt be a 100 % run but just to go for the weapons and cash that I need, and clear the campaign.

Other than that, sounds like id will keep updating the game. Maybe there is hope for some multiplayer stuff.

Will get back to it on release of all expansions. At least one is confirmed.

I love Hugo Martin, awesome game dev. ID just rocks in these days.
Too bad he plays the game with a controller.

Cool to see a game director play their game live showing off their skills and demonstrating how deeply they know their game. never seen anything like that I wish more game directors/developers live streamed their own games it's nice to see them enjoy their creations

Most would be like that journalist playing cuphead.

Finished this liked it much more than eternal or 2016. I think the shield was nice addition and it had good mechanics. I liked throwing it on flying enemies etc. And bash mobs. Boss fights were cool, but they were mostly at the end of the game. They felt bit long.

Least favorite part was going to low health and not having practical ways to regain and having to replay the entire arena.

So finally got around to getting this on sale (as was always the plan)... Boy, IDTech 8's performance is atrocious. I'm actually shocked because IDTech is always buttery smooth.

I thought Indiana Jones would just be a standout because it's machinegames and their other IDTech games prior also weren't the best optimised.

But to play a Doom game like this is genuinely disappointing. I get im not on the Cutting edge, but an RTX 3080, I9 10850k and 32 gigs of ram shouldn't be running this game on like mobile mode just for decent performance.

What gives? I know the engine is bottlenecking, most likely my CPU, but again... this is IDTech, this is Doom, honestly, this is atrocious.

I just finished it on PS5 pro. I had no issues with visuals/performance. The gameplay was also to my liking, much more so than eternal. What almost ruined the game for me was the level design which was frankly terrible. Maps are too big, too open and too boring. Big detractors were also the very limited enemy variety and the gimmick levels on the mech and especially the dragon. I also bad one of the collectible trophies bug on so no Platinum despite doing everything, bummer.

I traded my steam copy back and will most likely get PS5 version, is the performance decent? like no stutters or anything, solid 60?

If there were any drops, they were small enough to be completely unnoticable with VRR. It certainly felt locked 60 with no stutter, on pro that is.

Just finished the campaign that story is fucking bad hahahaha.

Gameplay was better compared to eternal.
Doom 2016 still best.

But i appreciate the devs for trying.
Just don't fucking add a story to doom you asshats

It was a great game, I just didn't think the direction they went was the correct one for a DOOM game.

I still feel that this should have been a Quake reboot.

I didn't play the other Doom games yet but I can't imagine any of them have better gameplay than Dark Ages. Endlessly reverse strafing and jumping like a disembodied floating camera has never appealed to me. Being able to block, counter, and shield throw, or shield dash to play with shotgun distances is far better with far more depth. I don't even think it's controversial to say the gameplay is better. It's almost objectively better.

Try out Eternal.

Doom TDAs biggest achievement is they still mixed up the formula and what they came up with isn't lacking.

Doom 2016 though, is definitely a traditional shooter, which is why I dont care for it. Its fine.

How do you know the gameplay is better if you didn't play the other titles?

Personally prefered 2016 myself. DA was still a decent game though. Never got on with Eternal.

I literally said right up top I didn't play it so that everyone knows I didn't play it. I said "I can't imagine," which is based on other FPS I've played over the last several decades, and watching Doom gameplay videos, and my speculation. I will play the others someday, and will update if I change my mind. I'm not trying to deceive anyone.

Personally, I think having the shield, counter / parry, dash, melee, is a dramatic improvement on the traditional FPS formula and Dark Ages is massively underrated. From a pure gameplay perspective, it's one of my favorite FPS ever made.

Glad you liked it. It's not even close to a top tier FPS for me. Titanfall 2 Halo Half Life etc.

Decent, I'd give it 7/10. I'd never play through it again.

Same, loved 2016 and Eternal. I wouldn't even categorize TDA as an FPS, a mish mash of action and FPS with some QTEs with those match the colors to block/dodge thing.

playing for the first time as I have heard much negativity surrounding the game, I absolutely love it. I actually appreciate the parry puzzle mechanics of the combat refreshing. I'll try to avoid spoilers, but I'm at the second big setpeice mission and I like the bombastic nature of these missions. The weapons are impactful and all have a niche where they excell.

I do understand those who want this game to be something it's not. It is not Doom 2016 just as Eternal wasn't Doom 2016, but I was able to avoid getting hung up on they fact for to being very aware of this fact beforehand.

Absolutely agree and i unfortunately have to say that the bad reviews of the game by people are simply not true.
I've replayed Doom 2016 recently and to me Doom TDA is as good just different.

I should bask in GAF game negativity more often, because it lowers my expectations and sets me up to enjoy things more. I also enjoyed Dark Ages. Probably my least favorite out of the modern Dooms, but still a fun game. I'm glad they made the cutscenes skippable, though.

Wait for 75% off, DLC (only 1 for this game) will probably release Summer, might get announced this month as iD soft is celebrating 35 years. This game is dropping very quickly, December/Winter sale (not even a month) it was 50% off. Spring sale you might see a 75% off, imo wait unless you want to play DOOM today.

This is on sale for 26€ at the moment on the PS store, the deluxe is another 10...

I'm kinda interested but I don't know what kind of doom it is, meaning, is it closer to 2016 or Eternal ?
Absolutely hated Eternal btw...

How long is it ? Is it replayable ? Is it worth it now for 26 Eurodollars ?
If yes, normal edition or deluxe one for the DLC ?

Thanks

This is like heavy armored medieval knight DOOM. Lots of shield and melee use. Soundtrack isn't as good as Mick Gordon's work, but passable. Dragon segments aren't very fun to play unfortunately. Took me about 20hrs to beat. I replayed a few segments for fun. I loved it, but Eternal is still the best for me.
