I like Sniper too. He can get out of control if you can't focus him down. And his ult is pretty awesome too. Low cool down, and if you follow Milk's skill build only thing wasting your mana should be your ult. So no mana problems for a while!

I want to give shadow demon a try, but his ultimate seems pretty useless. I know that probably isn't the case though. Is there a list of buffs it disables?

I'm not sure about the buff part but it's a pretty large cast range slow with a short cooldown. Also does 400 damage and even more if you have Soul Catcher on them.

There is still no swap in SD and RD, and it to LoL over 2 years after to implement one (They did it in January 2012). It will come, but its gonna take a while.

but why? seems like it takes 10minutes to implement and would help a decent chunk of your fanbase. its nearly unplayable this way.

The mode was All Pick. I love uncoordinated picks and people that don't ward so they can't watch for me hooking them.

On a side note, I was thinking about picking Pudge during picking, but a couple of people on my team randomed, so I was thinking "You know what, fuck it, random!", and I got Pudge.

I really hope Valve runs some kind of pro-courier, pro-wards campaign. I'm getting tired of being the only one that buys them in solo queue generally. I just wait a few seconds to see if anyone will pick up the slack and buy one or the other first, and if not after a bit, I just buy both, no matter who I'm playing as. I wish it was easy to teach everyone how essential these things are.

After about 20 hours worth of Dota 2, I had my first good game where I "carried" the team with Lich. I was able to solo a lane against 2 heroes and smother them with sacrifices and then destroy them a few times with my ultimate. I'm not claiming they were good players or that I'm a good player, but it felt good to finally feel in control for once.

Next up, need to learn how to use the courier and wards. The learning curve for this game is very steep considering the community isn't amazing and there are a lot of great players out there who will just stomp me. I found I needed to learn the basic tactics, hero control, and how to shop before I get into learning how to control the field with wards and couriers.

Courier is definitely a must-learn thing. It's pretty simple too. You can just use the buttons on the new UI if you want - one of them makes to courier go to the fountain in your base (if he's not already there) and retreive any items that are in your stash, for instance if you couldn't buy them at the side shop or if you're mid. The other button has the courier walk from your base to you and give you your items automatically. Very useful as it eliminates a lot of the need for you to go back and forth to your base's shop. Personally I hotkey the courier itself to #2 and use D to retrieve items and F to order it to give me my items. It also has other functions such as returning items to stash, giving it a temporary speed boost etc...

As for wards... I'm not super experienced with them, but there are two obvious spots to put them, which is on a ridge next to the runes. I think one of the spots is even marked with a symbol on the ground. These help you avoid getting ganked by people coming up the river and they also (obviously) let you know which runes are up. Not to mention they'll show enemy heroes going into Roshan's cave.

By the way, not sure if you've done so already, but I encourage you to branch out and try some new heroes once in a while. Obviously don't try the really tough ones like invoker until you're more experienced (I'm not even at that point yet myself), but maybe go into some single draft games once in a while. I started with Lich due to recommendations from GAF, but after trying out other heroes like Tidehunter, Sniper, Queen of Pain, Death Prophet etc... I pretty much never play Lich now. The great thing about the game is that all the heroes play so differently from eachother, so you won't really know which ones you really like the most until you give them a shot. You'll probably suck with them your first time, like I always do, but after you get a feel for them it will be worth it.

My biggest crutch is that I only feel really comfortable playing jungle characters where I can avoid enemy players until around early mid game. I dont feed the other team early and I can be a positive contribution once Im established.

Great advice, thanks Helmholtz! I will definitely be branching out. It really is amazing how much depth there is to each hero.

Not just single heroes, but hero combinations too. Game is pretty awesome and like you said there is a huge learning curve. It'll all come to you once you have more games under your belt.

See, this is why this game is so cool. I almost never, ever play jungle heroes, and I never feel like I'm in my zone when I do. Yet other people, like yourself, feel most at home playing them. I swear everyone's preferences and playstyles are different to some degree.

Beta. I don't think it's ridiculous.

it's something that should be implemented in alpha. we don't talk about some minor problem it's a defect which affects 8% of all males and it makes the game unplayable for anyone 'suffering' from it. it's such an easy fix, which makes it even worse. 2 lines of code maybe.

it's 2012 and we shouldn't have to beg for this stuff.

maybe I'm the only one that averages 14/2/16 with her. I've stopped picking her because I always feel like I'm cheating now.

25-2 and 24-4 in two pubs yesterday. I think he main problem is if you get ganked there isn't really anything you can do about it, or that you need a lot of farm and she can't farm easy.... idk I'm no pro

how does PL classify as a carry? So far I use the default recommended items, (ring of aq, boots (sometimes mana boots), and diffusal blade) don't really seem to know how to land the blows after I have landed the lance.

Its a powerful initiator yes and great chase down (I tried using phase boots with doppel walk, that was awesome) but not sure how to play it "properly".

Any tips?

I'm colorblind aswell but I understand that their priorities lie elsewhere right now. They're too busy working on the game itself to worry about optimizing it for a small group of people.

gaf please help me. this issue has plagued me since day 1 of the beta

my fucking overlay has not once worked for me :( shift+tab does nothing

I don't know what to do to fix it. please help :( It's such a complete bitch to add people I meet because I can't right click their name and hit view steam profile.. no overlay -_-

If you have great farm, go for radiance since illusions gets the radiance burn damage (but it doesn't stack ofc). You might want to go for treads and a vanguard or vitality booster before the radiance just to help you stay alive.
Don't go mana boots, let the supporters in the team get it instead. Illusions get damage from agi (and no damage from +dmg) and hp from str. So I would recommend going treads since it's the only boots that buffs your illus. Then get diffu (the slow will help you get some hits of and illus get the mana burn) and manta. At this point your illusions will do some good damage. Then go for heart so you can survive better and also boost the hp of your illus so they wont die from the AoE in team fights. After that go for butterfly since it will give you a nice boost in agi and some evasion.

What is a good class for a DOTA 2 newb?

Support. Try playing Lich for a start and don't play matchmaking. Do some bot games first, it will be less *painful. :)
In the options set your item hotkeys, the defaults are on the numblock, not good at all.

* no one will/can yell at you.

but we're not that small of a group. almost 10% of all males. i'm sure thats a bit more important than adjusting some numbers and it would take less time too.

Aren't there several kinds of colour blindness? I have no idea what colour blind mode does but surely you can't account for all of them?

seriously it's a beta, come back and complain when its not implemented on launch. The fact that Valve was trying to develop HL3 in mind of deaf people, I'm sure color blind people will get equal consideration in due time.

Ursa and Huskar are retardedly easy to use in pubs. I find them very boring.

After I get like 4 kills, someone on the other team says "fed Ursa, gg" and they don't know how to deal with me. They come at me alone, or without stuns/disables. =/

I have only played both twice.

Ursa is the best pub stomper, huskar has a lot of counters. Just about any cc/burst or necro/viper can shut him down pretty easily.

I disagree. Warding can get complicated.

Buying a courier and just putting down wards by the usual river spots even just at the beginning of the game makes you better than a majority of pub supports.. I can't count how many times I've solo queued and seen a support player not even bother with either.

I disagree. Warding can get complicated.

As Pepper said, Ursa is stupidly easy to use in pubs. I'd start with him.
Warding in pub level is easy, just ward the runes and the jungle if you're laning top dire-bot Radiant. Unless the other team is good, then those spots will be enough.

On a side note, how do you determine when to use sentry wards vs. gem of true sight vs. dust?

If you have a tanky player that rarely dies, get a gem on him. Sentry wards are nice for dewarding and dust is nice for unreliable invis heroes like Sand King or Brood.

That's the way I see it at least, you can always combine them all anyway if needed. Against Riki just get a force staff to escape his smoke.

Dewarding seems really complicated. Is there anything more you can do than just educated guesswork?

In pubs (if they have any wards at all) they are usually in the same places anyway. It will be guesswork in the end, but just put them on the high ground near Roshan and the top rune and they are most likely to be some there.

Also the 2 highspots in the teams jungles maybe. There are some nice guides for the best warding/dewarding spots but I don't have a link handy atm.

Warding Guide

My problem with warding is that I'll remember to ward in the beginning but at some point, I'll stop and it usually coincides with saving up to build pipe or mek. So I'll either ward a ton but never have enough to save for mek/pipe or not ward but have mek/pipe... I try not to jack kills as support but man it really sucks when your farm is limited...

Just do this: If there are ever 2 sets of wards in the shop, you have failed.

I think she last-hits damn easily. Not as easy as some melee guys, and a few range characters hit a little bit faster as well...but it's not like she has a terribad last-hitting animation like Zeus or CM or someone.

Yea, her main issue as explained to me is that she's done if she gets ganked because of the lack of escape mechanism. This much is true. But if your shit is warded and you watch the minimap and ss calls, you shouldn't be getting ganked anyway. She can keep a safe distance generally because of her regular attack range, and most enemies get kinda obvious when they want to be aggressive, so always being ready to retreat keeps you alive. Even if a gank comes, you just silence the stunner in the gank and you should still make it out alive.

So yea, you have to be a little more careful with her than some heroes early, but those frost arrows win your team ganks all game long.

...and when late game comes, that level 4 silence+stupid attack speed and DPS ends a lot of team fights before they start.

always have 200g for wards if you're playing support for the team (or if nobody else is doing it). It's hella easy to farm that 200g back, and the vision will either get your team several kills, or protect them from getting killed several times. There is really no item so valuable that foregoing wards makes sense. Not ever. Wards win games more than any other purchasable item in this game.

When I'm playing support, I get pissed that wards are out of stock because if I could buy more I would. If you don't see 4 wards on the map (2 runes, and both jungles), fix it!

this.

If I see a huskar picked, I pick a burst character and wait for him to jump someone. Half health Huskar vs. burst character = bye, Huskar.
