Dota 2 Beta Thread 4: Even Mike Ross Plays [Elder Titan]

Not open for further replies.
Just played a game as Veno against a team with a Slark. Bought sentries all game, and was pretty much the reason why we were able to actually kill him. Near the end our Weaver and Tide ask me why I'm buying sentries.

I assume it's because they had a gem I missed.

No.

Apparently, according to them Slark does not go invisible.

Somehow we still won the game...

Can someone give me a quick run down on the best way to use wards and couriers?

Was playing last night and someone was asking me to give them courier support (I was playing as Lich) but I didn't know what the hell I was doing. Still very much learning the ropes at the moment but think courier and wards are two fundamentals I'm missing the most at the minute.

Upgrade the courier to a flying ASAP, use it to get items to you quickly without having to go back to well or the secret shop. Can also use it to bottle crow.

Use wards to gain vision and establish map control. It's difficult to give you warding tips through a post (someone really has to show you in game), but in general, having vision on one or both sides of the river is usually a good idea. If you want defensive wards, ward up the entrances to your jungle, for offensive wards place them in their jungle.

I love that you think you're "calling me out"

Seems that way. I just had trouble thinking you could make a joke like that when I see you post something like

What is a skillshot in DotA 2, personally I think, there obviously aren't that many, but for example Lina's W is a skillshot and always has been. It's ground targeted, but the significant delay in activating it makes it non-trivial to land. Same with Kunkka's Q. Shadowfiend's QWE, large AOE but variable range that you have to eyeball.

And of course, Pudge's hook is a harder to land skillshot than just about anything in League.

And think you know what you're talking about. I went ahead and named an arguably short list a few posts later, you can go back and check that out.

Here let me link it for you: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=49101471&postcount=6291

That is a weird thing to ask of your support, unless he was asking you to buy it.

He was giving me a hard time about it. Being a bit of a dick actually. But it sort of gave me the kick up the arse to go out and learn a bit more about what I was doing.

Thank you, that's pretty helpful. For some bizarre reason I didn't think to check out Youtube. I've read a couple of starter guides but its sometimes nice to get a bit more personal observations about these things.

Regarding the courier, once I've bought it can the other players use it? Or if they ask for courier support, is it down to me to control it? I'm assuming the latter but thought I'd check.

yes and then i got two triple kills, level 18, with 6k gold in the bank, and then you just HAD TO LEAVE

edit: AND THEN WE HAD TO DEAL WITH ANBOKR SUPPORT NEXT GAME, I SHOULD HAVE RAGE QUIT THAT ONE

Just one of the perks of being on my team - I'm so good I cause people to ragequit the game.

RIP Procarbine - BZM

What if you also had OD's thing that restores mana? And Lifestealer's Rage, just to make sure no-one can stop you.

So, Faceless Tinker, has Rage, Essence Aura, Rearm, and Chronosphere. Anyone with a silence would just ruin him. Plus, his lack of back track will make him far less tanky.

The fact that you think Drow's Silence is a skillshot is kinda hilarious. Also, I'm pretty clearly not using the same definition you are, and I posted what I meant (e.g. I explicitly excluded things like Xerath's R in League from being a skillshot even though it's obviously ground targeted and not trivial to use optimally). It's not hard to land Shockwave on a target. It's hard to use it optimally (same with Silence), everything is hard to use optimally, even spells that you can target by left-clicking. Ditto Burrowstrike, which can be targeted either way and is not particularly hard to land. Why does Nyx's stun have a qualifier and Lion's doesn't, when Lion's has the same qualifier, plus small difference in usage that is like Burrowstrike.

Void's Chrono is a skillshot? Wow, ok. I guess I can go ahead and say i have trouble thinking you can make a list like this "and think you know what you're talking about."

No, once you buy a courier everyone on your team can start using it themselves. Sounds like they just wanted you to buy it (and upgrade it).

Uh yeah, Chronosphere is definitely one of the hardest skills to use effectively.
see post for talking about optimization

time walk is more of a skillshot then
NP teleport is a skillshot
Rooftrellen's invis is a skillshot

Edit: Razor's field is a skillshot? Razor's field. Is a skillshot.

To be fair, look at the shit listed under 'Proximity self-targeting' here. The definition is really broad

Yeah, i think that's bullshit. Ashe's Volley is a 'skillshot', ha. Arcanopulse and Finales Funkeln are listed as 'instant skillshots' even both have important delays. They just listed everything that uses a targeting cone/circle/line as a 'skillshot'.

I guess it is just a jargon term, which is why when that other guy brought up 'what is a skillshot' i think i just said 'nothing, usually just means stuff that's non-trivial to land'.

So your definition of skillshot is "Arrow like projectile" - way to dumb it down like a true League player. Any skill that has a targeted area or direction (as opposed to targeted hero) is considered a skillshot. Take for example Drows silence - it is very easy to miss on heroes that are moving because the animation for it is long and the area of effect is not very big. Being able to land such a silence on an entire enemy team (or multiple heroes) takes *ahem* some form of skill hence it being called a skill shot. Everything in Procarbines list counts. Honestly at this point I'm pretty sure you're some type of alt account trolling this thread. Nearly every post you make about DOTA 2 mechanics or behaviors is inflammatory, misguided and most of the time flat out wrong. I'm not trying to be mean but your opinions are wrong and it's really shitting up this thread.

here's my original post about skillshots in response to someone else

jumping to stupid conclusions, it's the dota way
Balrog you need to define skillshot better. Your definition of it is as muddled as BKB's definition of "magic immunity".

lol, i can't help it! shit is just complex.

This isn't even about your joke, it's about your implication and having no idea what you're talking about. Some people are support specialists, some people really enjoy playing a game changing support. It's a hugely important role that controls the early portion of the game.

I've moved away from a phase of playing hard carries, to playing pure mids, to now playing pure supports. I absolutely love it. As long as my lane partner is competent, I'll be out warding like no-one's business and counter warding all day long. I find it fun. And little else is more rewarding than knowing that your carry got fed because of you.

Had a game as AA with CK as a lane partner that was a complete blast. It helps that I could rack up the kills too of course but even if I'm barely staying 1 to 1 with kills to deaths, I'm still having fun.

People conflating skillshots with using abilities skilfully.

to be fair the distinction is somewhat artificial but not entirely

i'm still boggling the mind that razor's field counts as a skillshot, because every goddamn skill in dota is a skillshot then. So I think that list is inaccurate because it doesn't contain every skill in the game, who knows why. They all take skill to use. Except bash.

I don't know why playing support would be thought of as boring. There's nothing all that interesting about staying in lane last hitting for days and getting to buy lots of items. And when it comes to ganking and team fights supports often have more interesting skill sets than hard carries.

The only thing I really don't like is being so squishy and getting focused down a lot, especially late game.
