Dota 2 Beta Thread 4: Even Mike Ross Plays [Elder Titan]

I just checked my Recent Match skill levels and it's mostly High with some Normals and a few Very High. The Very High matches are from a month ago mostly and it's from when I was getting to grips with the game and the meta. My recent matches were way more intense in terms of other player skill including some in CM too. Some matches I won in V. Hard skill level that weren't even that much of a challenge skill wise, it was just auto pilot mostly plus some games were abandons.

So basically it doesn't mean much.

Very high games were stacks? Otherwise it sounds extremely weird that you have dropped from very high to some normal games. (or maybe the normal games were private games/tmm/abandons, as those automatically get sorted under normal)

Is it worth it to upgrade Diffusal Blade, or should you use that gold for more items?

Worth it when you are full on all your other items, or when you used all your charges. You can't buy a new recipe for a level 2 diffusal so once you're out of charges you have to rebuy the entire item.

No the normal games were from very very early in my DOTA 2 career + some of them were abandons (like essentially first week). Most of my games are High. The Very High skill games were not stacks though.

Oh, I see, misunderstood what you wrote about the normal games, thought they were actually happened recently.

There are different "levels" within each tier that are invisible. The three defined tiers are very broad. Some of Very High are the people just breaking into it from the top of the High bracket. On the other end of the spectrum are the insane dick-swinging chinese teams like iG and ZSMJ's new team. The people from the bottom of Very High won't match up with those from the top of Very High.

Also, this is the coolest site I've seen in a while: http://metagamejournal.com/hero-match-phase/

Professional game winrates based on game length. Really cool stuff. DAT EARLY GAME VENGE WINRATE.

I'd like to see the data sorted by version though, it seems to be mixing in different versions which skews the data.

The bold is basically what applies to me, I feel like I am right on edge of what the game considers High and V.High.

About to play a bot match against my friend - we're both going mid, as he wants to test Outworld Devourer. Any tips? I was thinking of going Windrunner, purely for intel reasons... wise choice? Or not?

I mean it's a bot match so it doesn't matter much but only one hero should really mid. OD should go Mid and Windunner should go in the long/offlane.

Oh wait it's AGAINST your friend. NVM then lol. Yeah Windrunner not the best choice against OD because he can steal your intel.

Generally you do NOT want to choose an int hero against OD, precisely because he steals your int. This means that your base damage will drop dramatically.

OD is also one of the most annoying mids in the game without roaming ganks. You could always be a dick and pick Nyx though.

Yeah AGAINST haha. And well I thought I'd try to out do him on intel...?

Noted. Nyx? Interesting. Any other recommendations? Would this be a good time to try Rubick?

GD studio is on, Adidas is now sponsor of Copenhagen Wolves. They were wondering why a big sponsor like that went into esports. James then hovered over LoL and said they know that word because their autistic children play it lmao.

you forgot to mention the part where he mentioned that they probably get tax breaks for helping the needy :lol

Compared to Dota 2? I agree, League is miles behind.

Then again Valve has a lot more freedom on adjusting their business model than Riot does. But I suppose that's irrelevant from a consumer- standpoint.

Nah, I regularly visit (and maintain) other threads, but I sometimes am bemused by the lengths that people go to justify how their choice of leisure time is superior to others.

I mean, isn't your enjoyment/preference alone reason enough?

Just because I think their microtransaction system is god awful (and it is) does not mean I do not enjoy the game to some degree. I'm glad LoL was released because dota games may have been left in the dark, and I do not know to what degree LoL influenced Valve's decision to make Dota 2, but LoL certainly makes the case that these games are relevant and popular.

I don't go out on a hidden agenda of 'pro dota, other games sux'. I spot an argument that is so idotic that it really does need to be said how wrong that person is. In this case its people trying to justify putting heroes behind a pay wall.

TBF as the "upstart", it was always in they're interest to bring out a more favourable model, whereas LoL as a game it's height of popularity has the ability to get anyway with that stuff. It's the nature of the game. Most people didn't like to pay a monethly subscription for WoW just for the sake of it but people did it anyway, because of the package it offered, it's a similar situation, hence why some games like gw1, went b2p or f2p.

My point is while this payment model is great it doesn't particularily mean valve is white knighting this payment model, they have something to gain from doing it. By attempting to gain a higher playerbase and persuade players by choosin it's game over riots it's using a better payment plan. That doesn't neccesarily mean should they become bigger than LoL they won't do the same thing. Which is why I'm taking it at face value.

I think there is an inherent assumption of a zero sum game when it comes to the popularity/success of either title as well. People want their game to be the 'it' game.

When T:A was sidelined by CS:GO, Shootmania, and HiRez focusing on Smite instead, it was a sad sad time for the competitive community.

Though, there are benefits to that 'X v. Y' game situation. Unreal Tournament, for example, was really good at drawing in bad players and keeping them out of the vastly superior Q3A community.

:P

Wait, wait wait. Hating on Unreal Tournament?

eternal dislike confirmed. Meet me mid, you sonofabitch.
No no, it's not hate. I have much appreciation of it for the reason listed above.

I mean, there's only so many gauntlet kills on UT scrubs you can do before it becomes mind numbingly boring.

There were rumblings about it not quite fitting the games style or maybe the hero's style. Can't remember exactly.
I think it was just the set in general wasn't up to standards. They have since improved the textures and added some things to make the robe less boring. They also seem to have changed the mask slightly so it's not smiling anymore.

I really doubt they'd remove it, I think it suits the style fine, even if the mask is a bit ugly. It's also still in the top sellers.
