Dota 2 Beta Thread 4: Even Mike Ross Plays [Elder Titan]

Hmm can someone give me a bit of advice? After playing two weeks of bot-matches with two friends we started playing public and we generally do alright though my friends are much better than me and I'm looking for a way to compensate. What I should say first is that I'm actually just not made for RTS-type games or even competitive gaming...

"Why do you play DOTA 2 then?" you will ask now and well it got annoying to sit there every night in Skype and hear them playing the game so I decided to join and while normally being nice people when it comes to competitive gaming they are super sensitive about winning and others making no mistakes... not a great premise right?

Well I do alright with Drow Ranger (around 8/1/12 stats in my first public game if I remember correctly and it stays fairly close to that) the problem is just when I'm not fast enough to get Drow. Usually I evade to Sniper but while it works in bot-matches I'm rather terrible with him because of the more active play-style. What I love about Drow Ranger is that she only has two active skills and not much to worry about other than silencing and shooting arrows. When I play with Sniper though I usually super-panic in team-fights as I will undoubtedly hear my friends yell "GET HIM WITH YOUR ULT, GET HIM WITH YOUR ULT!!!!111" and as soon as that happens I frantically try to press R (I usually end pressing T by mistake...) and frantically move the mouse around try to figure out which of the three low-health heroes they mean and by the time I finally clicked I'm usually death :(

I find the whole thing funny as I have no problems in LoL playing as Ashe and I can aim her ultimate like a breeze o.o But oh well what I wanted to ask, does anyone have some general playing advice for me and also some alternative hero suggestions that play similar to Drow Ranger in terms of simplicity? (only two active skills etc.)

I tried playing Lina before as I'm a fan of Lina Inverse from Slayers so I loved the homage (or was DOTA before Slayers? D: ) though while I generally manage to do well with Lina in bot-matches I'm not sure how I would do in public-matches as she is classified as support and my non-RTS compatible brain fears of the thought to be responsible for wards, not to mention that I tend to miss with Lina's stun because of the delay :(

So yeah thanks for help and suggestions in advance!

Oh and I actually have another group of friends I play LoL with as I find it far easier than DOTA 2 but one of my friends whom I play DOTA considers LoL as a dumb and too easy game... I don't want to to derail this in a LoL vs. DOTA argument as I think both are equally great games though I thought I would mention that I already have experience with it.

your friend is dumb and probably not even that good at dota

that having said, skeleton king is quite simple but effective

You can try out Viper. Only 2 spells to use, similar playstyle to Drow and is more durable than both Drow and Sniper.

Oh that's interesting, I had no idea Viper had only two spells too, thanks for that I will look into him (it?) tomorrow! :D

Heh... well I don't know about that, he generally seems to be WICKED SICK with Slark and on a good day he can rack up 28 kills though I won't argue much about the "dumb" part as I know him since Kindergarten so I know that underneath his attitude is a really nice person though he has a ego that beats the sun in terms of size which naturally comes with a healthy dose over overconfidence and "all others suck!" mentality, atleast when it comes to games xD

And thanks for the suggestion with Skeleton King, I will look into him too! :D

I'm not necessarily of the belief that less active skills means a hero is easier to play, but Skeleton King only has a single active. Viper only has two. Lich only has two skills you'll reasonably be using in a hectic team fight and was one of my favorite heroes starting out (and still is).

As far as the rest is concerned, at some point the easiest way to get rid of panic you're experiencing is simply with experience. When you're confident in knowing what you should be doing in a given situation, it's much easier to relax and execute than if you're trying to figure out your skills, figure out your positioning and figure out who you should be focusing all at the same time. Also, you might consider playing without your friends for some period of time. If they are indeed better than you, then there is a good chance they are dragging you into a higher skill tier than you might belong in (right now). I've heard the matchmaking system tends to weigh the higher ranked members of your party more, so you might be playing against higher skilled opponents than you would otherwise. Some games with more similarly ranked players while you're still getting introduced could do some good.

Thanks for the advice! I have to keep myself short as I have to get up in 6 hours so I actually should sleep but eh... I will look into Lich aswell then! As for the skill-tier I think it shouldn't matter right now as we all started playing together and also only play together so we are equally at level 1 with 150 battlepoints :/ And yeah I thought as much about the team-battles that only experience will help though my main problem across all heroes is that whenever a team-fight starts everything melts together before my eyes and I have no idea what is going on :( I try to focus on health-bars but I often lose track of my own hero too...

What would you feel bad about? D: I'm maybe a bit of a over optimistic and over friendly person, atleast I hear that alot but that's how I always was, I rarely can see bad in others... *shrug* xD

And oh I can explain that for me, I'm too afraid to play LoL outside of my circle of friends where we all Skype/Teamspeak and I nicely get told what to do when in LoL so I don't get lost... ehehe...

Sniper only has two active skills as well though? Shrapnel for slowing dudes a bit and Assassinate for finishing off dudes with low health who are too far away for you to attack.

The only reason Drow is easier than Sniper is because you can orb walk with her at the start, but eventually Sniper's range is so large that it won't matter if you harass because you should be a fair ways from the creeps.

If you're freaking out about what to do in team fights, you just need to play more. I'm terrible at RTS games, but Dota isn't really one and it didn't take me too long to learn the basics. Read guides, watch videos and just keep practising. If you're still not very good, quit playin' carries and play some supports/nukers. Try out Death Prophet or something, she's a really easy hero.

The only thing I hope for the most in this patch (aside form skyhottiemage) is LUNA and Puck added tot he dammed importer so I can make some dammed items for them D: D: D: D:

I'm spending my semester in Australia and my experiences so far on the Australia servers have been nothing short of atrocious. Can some Aussie gaffers please come play with me? I'm thinking of taking a 3 month break until I'm back in the States at this point.

Add madman0017 to steam. We shall play if I have the time.

Relax...takes 100 hours of playing against real people to get into the groove of things more or less (notice how I didn't say get good). I have the worst reflexes in the world so don't worry about it...you'll adapt..Everyone at first gets overwhelmed (forget to use wand/items..can't juggle more than a couple of skills). It's all deceptively simple..

Can anyone explain why in pro matches you have a melee hero who will circle a creep or tower hitting once, circle about 15 degreees to the right, hit, circle, hit, circle hit.

I don't know how to do that or why that is.
All I see in pubs is just straight hitting.

hes like a boxer man
always gotta be swift on your feet, gotta keep moving
helps you dodge stuff and react faster, then you know youre pro

just issue a move command after the auto attack connects (rather than waiting for the animation to finish)

It's just orb walking practice.

Doing that around a tower also helps with positioning - you want to bully them away from attempting a deny if you've got backup or maybe you can catch sight of a gank/fight brewing (mid T1, for example)

That is Pro Leshrac.

Cancelling backswing and changing positioning.
