DoubleFine's Amnesia Fortnight prototyping event for public viewing, voting & playing

The daily videos are excellent. I've been enjoying seeing a little more of the technical side of development than the DFA episodes have included thus far.

2PP must be working on these non-stop.

It's easily been worth the money as a Humble Bundle donator. Thanks everyone at DF!

I don't mind that only one of the games concepts really appeals to me - Spacebase - and that is with reservations. The core mechanics look fun, but I like sim games with structure: either through levels, specific goals (e.g Theme Hospital) or - failing that - a time limit and score (Game Dev Story). I never gelled with Dwarf Fortress. I like something concrete to aim towards.

I'm still surprised that Hack & Slash was the highest voted. Out of all the projects, it's the one I still have no interest in. I was cool on Black Lake, but it's progressing into something I'd like to try.

Me too, and i don't really see it going anywhere to be honest; i hope to be wrong.

On the other hand Autonomous is getting very interesting.

Likewise, I'm really impressed by how quickly Autonomous has come together. I would say I was worried about the progress on Spacebase, but a lot of that game's progress is probably "behind-the-scenes" with the simulation aspect and all that.

How can I access the vimeo streams of earlier 2PP Daily videos? I can only find download links.

On your account page, scroll to the bottom and click "Amnesia Fortnight" and then scroll down... should be Vimeo streams there.

There's only the most recent (Day 4) one. The others are only there as direct downloads.

I'm sure the documentary has exaggerated these impressions (there's nothing like a bit of editing!) but I'm also enjoying watching the different teams interact. The leadership styles of the team leads, the way all the team members pull together to get the job done. It's very watchable in a reality TV type of way.

For example, Andy Wood with The White Birch seems more focused on the feeling that he wants his game to evoke. He's open to brainstorming and doesn't appear to be planning every little bit of content himself. He has his vision and sense of what he would like his game to become; he's shared that vision with the team and they're trying to bring it to life collectively. Everyone pitching in ideas.

Whereas Brandon (and his leather jacket) on Hack n Slash seems much more focused on deciding on all the nitty gritty himself and getting the team to implement it.

I also loved the contrast between Brian and Camden and their giant audio rooms of doom with Chris and his Macbook Pro and a pair of headphones. Yet the Spacebase music samples sound top-notch. Nice one Remo!

Episode five was great. The Autonomous meeting where they were trying to figure out how to work in a tutorial was really interesting to watch. Even if none of these games ended up in a playable state the documentary has been worth my $10.

Was watching the live stream earlier and I'm becoming even more of a Brad Muir fanboy.

Seriously such a cool guy.

Dude's enthusiasm is contagious.

And Autonomous continues to amaze. Seriously impressive work given the time constraints.

I realized something interesting about these protogames. Where the gender of the protagonist is clear, she's always female.

It's super interesting how my opinion of the games changed based on how the development process is portrayed through the documentary and the state of the prototypes at this point. This is based ONLY on the daily recap videos, so my opinion may be influenced by the editing more than anything and everything I'm saying may be completely wrong and far from the truth.

Autonomous was a project I wasn't interested in at all and didn't vote for, but has now become my most anticipated project of AF. Lee Petty is a great project lead with a clear vision, yet it feels like the game is really coming together as a team project where you can clearly see the influences of everyone involved. Also, so far it looks the most polished, the artstyle is amazing and I would probably pay money for it at this point in from of a kickstarter or something.

SpaceBase so far looks to me like "The Sims" in space, which I'm not interested in at all. I don't really have much of an opinion on it other than that because the documentary really hasn't shown anything aside from tile and character art and vague hints at systems. Looks like the team is working well together, but it feels like it's missing a clear direction for what the game should be in the end.

Hack and Slash was the game I was most hyped about and it still may turn out amazing, but the development and group interaction is relatively boring to watch. It seems like Brandon Dillon would rather make the game entirely on his own so it is exactly how he wanted it to be, and the other guys are just there to produce art. Actually, from the documentary I'm not really sure how many people there are in this team and what each of them is actually doing. This is definitely one way to lead a project like this, especially if you have a very clear vision, but it makes for somewhat unintersting TV. I hope it turns out awesome still, because the concept is really cool.

White Birch looks like a platformer so far. Nothing more, nothing less. It seems like there was a vision on what kind of artstyle and feel the game should have but not on how the game would actually play, aside from being a platformer. ICO is a clear inspiration, but if you want to make a prototype for a game like ICO, I'd love to see atmosphere and tone of the world more than anything, because tha is what makes it interesting. I'm not a fan on how Andy Wood is leading the project. He seems way to reserved and shy to lead a project like this.

Black Lake is interesting, because I think the group is working together well, but so far it seems like the game really isn't going anywhere. I still don't understand what the game will actually play like and why I should be interested in it. The development is interesting to watch though, because by the latest episode (6), it seems like some people of the team arrived at the same conclusion.

What I'm not sure about is if the documentary is highlighting specific things about the groups so it doesn't get boring and that is influencing my opinions, or if it's a representative vertical slice. I'm really excited to see how this will go on and how my opinion will change later on. Absolutely fantastic project.

Hack and Slash has the smallest team. Because of it's scope, and that way Dillon doesn't have to do a lot of team management stuff and can spend more time coding the game himself.

Each project lead put together a list of the roles they needed to build their prototype, and mine happened to be the shortest list. A retro-styled action adventure just doesn’t require as many people to build as an animation-heavy immersive 3D game. I intentionally kept the scope of the prototype small because I think constraints are a good thing, especially for a game like Hack n’ Slash, where constraints are part of the aesthetic. Also, a smaller team means I need to spend less time on project management, which means I get more hands-on time actually writing code for the game. That was particularly important to me for Hack n’ Slash.

I got a ridiculously talented team, and I actually got more people than I requested! The extra help has been great for the project; I left the scope of the game the same, so all of that extra effort is making the project an even more tightly polished experience.

Is the most recent video (Day 6) supposed to be 2.3GB? The others have all been around the 800MB range. Seems unusually high. Is it extra long?

It's 31 minutes, so its the same length as the last 5. Maybe they forgot to compress/encode it or something.

Brad's such a fun guy. If there was an emoticon dictionary his face could easily define :D.

I'd like to see a little more of both Spacebase and Hack n Slash in the daily recaps too.

It's pretty clear that those two games are more difficult to film due to their game types. The primary focus is the code not the art. I imagine that code must be much more difficult to portray in the constraints of a half hour video than pretty clips of the cool 80s scifi world of Automaton or Jane's impressive work on the White Birch tower.

Over the weekend I rewatched the first two DFA episodes and it was really quite funny to be able to identify so many DF people now in the countdown scenes.

I also couldn't resist bumping up my pledge for Amnesia fortnight since the amount of entertainment I've been getting from this is ridiculous.

I think it has over double the video bit rate, it must be what's making the size so overblown in comparison.

I really think SpaceBase will become a full game.

Aside from Maia, no one's even making a game like that. And Maia seems more influenced by Bullfrog where as this is obviously Startopia

Is it me or did Day 7 completely miss out White Birch? Didn't find the episode as interesting because it focused more on leadership than the games directly, but its good to get that side of it.

I liked the interviews in Ep.7, hopefully they continue them with the other leads next episode. Can't wait to play Autonomous and Hack n Slash.

I hope they polish up one of the more flashy prototypes & try to pitch it to pubs for funding as a full game.

For Spacebase, though, it seems like it could work by continuing development with a tiny team (1 or 2 programmers & an artist) and essentially do a minecraft model, with paid alpha & regular updates. Doublefine are trying all sorts of funding experiments & Spacebase seems like the perfect game to try out another alternative funding model.

Steam even supports this model now. Don't Starve works that way. You buy into the beta, get regular updates, and will upgrade to the final version in March.

in one of the videos I saw a wii U that was hooked up to a kit cord...
