Drag-on Dragoon 3 (Drakengard 3) Official Site open + Pics

What is up with SE's games looking awful in media?

This looks bad, and Lightning Returns wasn't so hot either.

Not sure what people expected here.

This is obviously not a AAA project, and I for one am glad that S-E is going for lower-budget HD console games for the first time of the gen (if you don't count slightly better-looking games like Infinite Undiscovery and NIER).

Most companies wouldn't have given Taro Yoko this freedom, and I'm glad S-E is doing so, even if it's for a lower-risk, lower-budget project.

Less graphical prowess, more originality and creativity: this is the exact opposite of everything that's happenned so far in HD games. Good on them.

As for my opinion... I'm not a graphics whore, so I really don't mind the jaggies or low-polygon count, etc. Artistic direction seems top-notch, and I can't wait to get immersed in the promising atmosphere that the story and music will create.

People tend to remember old graphics with nostalgia.

I'm sure when it comes out and we see it in an actual resolution, it will probably look like a lower budget early gen game at worst.

I'd peg the graphics at late-gen PS2-era....but the lack of fancy graphics + engineers to optimize the engines is just a consequence of a budget title.

It obviously blows WAY past anything on the PS1.

Safe to say that if the character models can be well defined as human-like in proportions and contain some well defined features and textures it's already beyond the PS1 era lol.

Even the masters who pushed the PS1 to the limit with games like Vagrant Story, FF VIII and MGS would struggle to get something like models that running on the PS1.

The PS2 era is when the character models started looking more human like and less like hideously deformed cartoon characters. Which is why many games like FF XII and X still hold up when emulated and uprendered (not upscaled) internally at 3 - 4 times their native resolution.

Could easily pass for a psp game, BUT I DO NOT CARE. And i just realized i haven't played any of the previous ones on pcsx2, i have to find them.

Totally agree.

AAA budgets place constraints on creativity, but without that manpower creators are stuck with a choice of scaling down their ambitions (another type of creative constraint) or opting for a less polished execution.

This is why the loss of B-tier retail titles has been such a blow in my opinion; games with bigger ideas than budgets have largely stopped being made, and they were often the titles most instructive of where the AAA market *could* go.

Famitsu compression really is trash. They just posted up some new KH 1.5 shots and they look jaggy as hell. We know the game is much cleaner.

Not that this game looks that much better in the shots from the site, but Famitsu shots are like a butchering. I don't know what they do that causes this but it's awful and they should have it fixed.

oh man, this game is ugly. I guess it was to be expected, but damn. I'd rather have it on the 3ds, or vita, if they're going to do it like this.

The original Drakengard is like the Evangelion of video games except it's steeped in mean spirited nihilism rather than navel gazing existentialism.

The main character, Caim, is a dark parody of standard JRPG protagonists. Think about standard JRPG protagonists. Think about the nature of grinding, of killing enemies and monsters to level up. He's mute for legitimate in game reasons. He's also a blood thirsty killer. He gleefully kills countless people simply for the chance to get stronger. Nothing gives him pause. Not even being forced to face child soldiers. He's presented as barely any better than villains he fights and his fellow party members treat him as such.

Everyone in the party is similarly disturbed and depraved.

That sounds pretty cool, would you say its worth going back and playing if you missed it the first time around?

It is a hard game to recommend to people because it has dreadful camera problems and can feel really repetitive and archers will likely make you throw your controller and scream FUCK YOU THAT'S BULLSHIT.

But if you're really looking for an extremely unconventional story and some really neat ideas then by all means go for it. The sound track is awesome too you feel like a villain more than you do the hero because of it.

Which is great because Caim murders the shit out of everyone, no fucks given.

Just going to get this out there; Drakengard is a bad game.

The game mixes Flying sections with your dragon and dynasty warriors style hack and slash with RPG elements. And it does so poorly.

The controls are horrible for the flying sections. There are a lot of weapon to chose from, but there is little depth to the actual combat. The graphics are abysmal as well.

Drakengard is not a fun game in any sense of the word. And if you're interested in playing it, you have to be able to get past that.

When I picked up Drakengard, I marathoned through it. The story is so bizarre, and so dark compared to anything else in video games that I was just driven to play the game just to see more and more of the story.

If you want to enjoy Drakengard, you're going to need to be able to forgive a lot. Drakengard was considered bad in it's own day and honestly for very good reason.

Unfortunately you're going to have a really hard time finding a good playthrough of the game online. I personally couldn't, and it's why I decided to play it myself.

Drakengard 2 is generally considered better from a game play perspective (At least from everyone I've spoken to). That said, the story isn't as interesting because it's much more hopeful and the main character, Nowe (Pronounced like no way), is much more of a standard idealistic JRPG character.

I consider NieR to be the best of the bunch. Not only does it have my favorite game OST of all time, it's game play is much more refined and enjoyable. It takes the RPG hack and Slash and ties them into a pseudo Zelda style world. The game throws a lot of just crazy curve balls at you that honestly completely blew my mind when I played it. I think you might want to start from there as NieR works as a standalone game despite being a sequel to one of Drakengard's alternate endings.

I recall Caim giving exactly two fucks the entire game. Just two.

dem low polygon soldiers. are they like 50 polygon a soldier?

Ugh I need this. Who gives a fuck how it looks?

Though it is kinda funny that this looks like it should have come out in the beginning of the generation and in comparison, Lair looks like a ps4 game.

Honestly it looks comparable to the first game. The environments have only been slightly improved XD

They released 720p screens: http://gematsu.com/2013/03/drakengard-3-high-res-screenshots-artwork

It looks better than in the Famitsu images, but still pretty bad.

This ground texture looks like it was pulled straight from Twilight Princess XD.

Well trying out Drakengard 1 in PCSX2 I think the models and textures got a little better:

I spent the better part of today trying to get that game running.....it looks okay but it runs at 10-20 FPS -_-;.

I wanna play Drakengard 1, dammit! Guess i need to actually HOOK up the PS2...:/

lololol worst looking game ever. it's not even clear what's happening in this shot :(

everything is so low poly, look completely deformed. is that supposed to be two poeple? I can't tell :|

I can understand if these shots are from early development cycle, and I hope it is, but were SquareEnix at their rightful mind when they released the screenshots?

the poor soldiers have no feet!

You need an i5/i7 to get 100% speed in Drakengard 1, I think.

I got an i3 and I'm getting 100% with a widescreen hack and x4 native res. Use PCSX2 1.0 for that though I know earlier versions have trouble and not sure about later ones and I can post my settings if anyone needs them.

Overclocked perhaps? I noticed you had the MTVU speedhack on the screenshot, I forgot how much that helps. Also, a beefy GPU is nice to have for uprendering beyond x3 native res.

Nope, it's clocked regularly and I got a GTX460 going on but I'm not technically proficiently enough to know how good that is. I think I had it at 2x for that screen though I upped it to 4x after and it ran the same.

This is why devs close shop. All u Manz with ur crazy graphics expectations.

Shiiiiiiiie. I hope more devs opt for lower tech if it means makin cheaper games,

HAHAHA OH MY GOD.

That shit is terrible. The textures would look straight-up PS1-level if they didn't have the bum ass normal maps on them. Those seams are fucking ghastly. And the models...wow.

They had to have ported this thing from PSP. or DS. Or something.

I think the soldiers in the dragon screenshots look so low poly because you'll probably spend most of the time flying high up. No point in loading high poly chars when they look like dots high up. The only thing that worries me is the enemy count. It looks quite low in those screens. Other than that, I don't mind the graphics at all. I am just happy we are getting another game from Cavia.

This isn't from Cavia.
