Dragon Age: Inquisition | E3 2014 Coverage

I must be the only one who thinks this game looks utterly generic and mediocre. Graphics and some decent art aside it has nothing going for it.

I saw this e3 walkthrough video on IGN and the NPC's were just sitting there like static mannequins. It reminded me of Knights of the Old Republic, none of the NPCs moved in that game either. Compare it to MGSV or Dragons Dogma where guards have patrol patterns and move through the day, it just looked so pathetic.

Just looks like the same old shit with a new coat of paint.

NPC's were just sitting there

I just can't take you seriously after reading that...what do you want them to do eh? What you did see was a small snippet of gameplay that is beta footage.

You could say the same thing about any other game out there, most AI's don't do anything extreme or revolutionary and your examples are pretty substandard too considering most things.

Ehh I'm a huge ME fan, but it was most definitely worse there. Sure there wasn't one big choice like a possible character death being ignored, but there were so many major choices that were largely ignored and or neutered. Pretty much the entire end of ME1 was quietly ignored and had no real meaning, along with a whole host of other major choices that felt important at the time, but resulted in practically nothing different in the end.

Its been so long that my memory is pretty fuzzy, I don't remember anything too jarring happening between the ME games. It could be that I made the "right" choices.

FYI the posted the Writer interview for Leliana:

leliana-thumbnail.jpg

[DRAGON AGE]: It’s been a few years since we last saw Leliana. What has she been doing?

[SHERYL CHEE]: After the Fifth Blight, Leliana was summoned to Val Royeaux by her friend and mentor, Divine Justinia V.

[DA]: There’s definitely some history between them.

[SC]: Yes—Justinia was formerly known as Revered Mother Dorothea, the woman who saved Leliana when Leliana was betrayed and almost killed by her old mistress, Marjolaine. Because of their history, Leliana feels a close bond with Justinia; naturally, when Justinia needed her help, Leliana went to her side. She has been serving as the Divine’s Left Hand for some time now.

[DA]: How has her personality changed since her introduction to the series?

[SC]: Those who played Dragon Age: Origins might remember Leliana as a cheerful, optimistic young woman who tried her best to do what she thought was right. It’s now ten years later, and lots of things have happened. She’s not as carefree. Even if she wanted to show that side of her personality, she can’t.

[DA]: Why’s that?

[SC]: She’s a high-ranking member of the Inquisition with a great deal of responsibility, and she has to present herself a certain way for the Inquisition’s sake. However, if you prove that you're trustworthy, and that you understand where she's come from, she might let her guard down a little.

[DA]: How did you find revisiting Leliana?

[SC]: Coming back to Leliana gave me the chance to pull everything from Leliana’s various appearances throughout the Dragon Age world and fit them together.

[DA]: In what way?

[SC]: Leliana’s Song shared her backstory, establishing her relationship with the woman who would become the Divine. In Dragon Age: Origins, Leliana is coming to terms with her past and trying to figure out who she is. In Dragon Age II, and the Asunder and Masked Empire novels, we see Leliana in her role as Left Hand of the Divine. It’s been a long road for her, and in Inquisition, we’ll get to see how her journey has shaped her as a person, and where the path might take her in the future.

[DA]: Were there any challenges?

[SC]: Leliana is always a little tricky because of how the player’s choices in Origins can affect her. I had to make sure that no matter what the player did in Origins, Leliana’s role and character in Inquisition made sense. It's a matter of respecting her core nature, so that regardless of what happened (or happens) to her, she's always clearly "Leliana."

[DA]: You said that Leliana is now “Left Hand of the Divine.” What exactly does that mean?

[SC]: As we know, Cassandra is Right Hand of the Divine: the warrior who puts herself front and center, she’s bold and direct and driven. Leliana is the Left Hand—the “sinister” hand, as it were. She hangs back in the shadows. She watches the Divine’s back, watches for enemies, waits for them to reveal their weaknesses, and comes at them from the shadows.

[DA]: Those skills must be useful for the Inquisition?

[SC]: The Inquisition is a new power, a threat to some of the existing structures within Thedas. Naturally, some people will oppose it, and Leliana will deal with these opposing forces should direct action or diplomacy fail.

[DA]: So she gets along well with the rest of the Inquisition?

[SC]: The Inquisition is Leliana’s priority. She knows that infighting will doom it to a quick and messy end, so she’s often willing to put aside her own personal feelings to do what’s best for the organization.

[DA]: Can you give us an example?

[SC]: She has a healthy respect for Cassandra, even if she doesn’t always agree with her. Ultimately, their goals align, and they’ll work together for what they believe is the greater good. It’s a little like Mom and Dad quarrelling behind closed doors, but presenting a united front to the kids. Same goes for Cullen.

[DA]: And finally, the question on everyone’s mind: How is Schmooples?

[SC]: Ah, Schmooples. Maybe we should let people find out on their own when they play the game.

I'm pretty sure they've said in other interviews that she wasn't romanceable due to player choices from DA:O, they didn't want that experience to mess with the new story..same thing with Morrigan.

Oh yeah, the info post linked on page 20 says she isn't. Nevermind.

You are not the only one to ignore all the great things this game has going for it, no. For what that's worth.

The party combat looks impressive, with a return to tactical combat including position spells (LoS spells, Friendly Fire toggle, etc), cross-class cooperation (freezing an enemy then shattering them with a melee skill, for example), and more teamwork-centric gameplay skills (the Focus gauge). The ways in which you can influence the world through the Inquisition look like a return to player reactivity that we haven't seen from a lot of RPGs since Origins. The characters look to be centered on expanding the world and challenging central tenets of the lore (Cole with the Fade, Dorian with Tevinter, IB with the Qun). The environments are beautiful (and no, that can't be reduced "graphics.")

And, for the isometric players, there's still a chance they tweak the tactical cam to allow for a more classical playstyle.

they already shat on player choices by bringing her back from the dead for some people but its romance crap where they draw the line? lol

... Devil's advocate. I'd say a good counter-example is Witcher 2 (people ran for shelter when it rained, for example) and, if you saw the latest trailer, Witcher 3. I've never seen so much activity bustling in a town before in the latter.

Lmfao. Only make one attractive romance option... Give her an idiotic horn hat. Take off horn hat.... She's bald. Bioware you cheeky pricks.

Hey man, it may be rare, but when a woman can pull it off, bald can be amaaazing. She looks like she can. I hope theres a hide hat option for player and companions.

Was mentioned in one E3 interview that she's nuclear because the fade explosion killed The Divine.

Really wish I didn't read this shpoiler...

We can only hope that Bioware isn't going to just give us one romance option for the menfolk...I don't think they are that dumb...I'm not even sure if they announced all the companions yet...so we may have some hope there.

I'm gonna blame this on the game being cross gen. Plus that kind of simulation has never been a part of BioWare's games, so it's not surprising to see it missing from here. I would love for that kind of stuff to be in the game, but it's really a tertiary kind of feature. What matters the most is the combat, characters and story. As long as that stuff is solid everything else is gravy.

Biggest issue in this game is that they haven't announced the wardog as a companion.

Here I am to ruin your day, again. No Mabari, not even as DLC, at least at the moment according to the devs.

If it's any consolation it's like the very first thing that happens in the game. We're not even sure if there's any kind of Ostagar opening scene or if it just starts with everyone getting blown the fuck up.

KOTOR only had one romance option.

I love the Bioware seems to be trolling their western otaku audience.

Jesus man everything you've said to me is to shit on my parade. I might as well go put my face into your toilet seat hahaha.

Next you'll tell me that we'll play in the same 3 caves all game.

Wellll....that's super unlikely thankfully. They said that the area shown in the E3 demo was larger than all of DAO combined, and that it was one of ten regions in the game and a medium sized map compared to the other 9. So DAI should be at a minimum 10x larger than DAO. And they say they've taken great lengths to ensure every area is unique and not a retread of previous locations. So I think we're good on that one.

Maybe she could turn out to be some divine-empowered adversary if you're siding with the mages, so we get to kill her (for good) this time.

Except (Asunder novel spoilers:)
she (by the Devine's decree) helps the mages rebel in the first place. They ain't happy at how power-crazy the Templars have gotten, and as a result the Templars themselves have rebelled from the Chantry hierarchy to fight the Mages on their own terms. Plus we don't know that Mages cause the tear in the first place.

Nope. BioWare games post BG2 have NEVER had very dynamic looking environments in terms of NPCs having routines and doing much to add life to the atmosphere. They're almost always glued into place or like DA2, they walk around aimlessly like a air hockey puck just bouncing around things.

I find it really distracting and hopefully Inquisition is better about it but I'm doubtful. Look at The Witcher games or even Skyrim if you want to see some better instances of NPCs doing things beyond standing in one spot.

I knew she reminded me of someone.

Or even just Flemeth from DA2 with the hair horns:

Just finished DA:O a couple hours ago and I am super pumped for this now.

I'd suggest Dragon Age 2. But you can probably get the basics by reading the plot. You might miss references as one of the party members, and easily the best bro ever, is part of the DA2 cast. Also this one.

Also. ENCHANTMENT.

I'm considering it but I don't want to get too burnt out on the series before Inquisition. Took me a couple weeks just to get through Origins.

I never understood this, it's as if they think their main install base are like 75 percent gay/lesbian...

Not true. Bi people only have more options because they don't care about gender restrictions and those options have been geared towards bi women. Straight people have always had more options than gays and lesbians. It was usually none or one for them until DA2 and ME3. You are really hung up on gay people possibly getting more options than straight people.

True. You might end up disliking the series if you play them too close together. Then I'd definitely recommend just reading the plot as at the end of the day what is affecting this game is the over-arching plot of DA2. None of the other shit really matters.

Dragon Age 2 can be finished in a way shorter time than DA:O.

Really, DA:O shits on DA2 from great heights in terms of scale/things to do/epicness.

To be fair, it's one of the very few franchises that give the options Bioware do. The vast majority of games give Gays/Lesbians MAYBE 1 option if any at all.

It's really nice that Bioware allows for people to actually relationship with someone they are attracted to instead of saying "hey you're gay, so you only get this one character or nothing".

I will say thought Leliana not being romancable really kills some of my hype for DA3. I won't lie, I play these because I like the characters, and Leliana is easily my favorite from the series, so I was hoping to romance her again since the Grey Warden just dropped away and I doubt they will have the exact Warden I made be able to show up in this game.

First off, I doubt that there will only be one romance option for straight characters. Secondly, you assume that only a gay/lesbian/bi player would appreciate gay/lesbian romance options in the game when, in fact, there will likely be quite a few straight male players choosing a lesbian romance option and quite a few straight female players choosing a gay romance option.

Or the ever rare Straight Male who is down for the Male/Male gay romance options.

Are we like the Shiny Pickachu's of the romance options? Haha
