Dragon Quest 11 (JP) |OT| whynotboth.gif

What's with Japan and effeminate tall guys? First P5, now DQ11...is it trendy or something? Sylvia is awesome BTW : sissy as hell but also strong and confident. I love him already (his victory pose is the best)

I'm so torn on 3DS vs PS4. My PS4 backlog is huge and my 3DS one isn't so big (just need to finish DQVIII), and it's nice to have a handheld JRPG for bedtime and when my wife has the lone TV in the house.

But damn that PS4 version looks amazing.

Is it literally just graphics I'd be missing out on? No gameplay differences, features?

One thing I liked about IX was upgrading my player's outfits and stuff and seeing them on the screen. Lame I know.Is that still a thing on the 3DS version?

Most equipment doesn't change character appearance. Weapons do change, and there are various costumes.

As my goal is always to communicate clearly, I don't use Roman numerals. As mentioned above, people tend to get them confused. I see no reason to use them at all if it's going to lead to confusion when someone can read an Arabic numeral and not get confused.
FWIW, the official hashtag is #DQ11 so it would seem SQEX agrees with you!

Something that seemed to come up a lot in prerelease interviews was that the story was supposed to have an "on the run" kind of feel. Has that been borne out in everyone's experiences so far?

That's been the focus as far as I've played. I was actually going to comment that this makes the game feel pretty unique as far as Dragon Quest stories go. There's a much firmer focus on the hero and his story than any sort of vignettes thus far. But I'm not super far in at this point, so it remains to be seen how long this will go on for. It's very interesting, regardless.

It makes sense for an hastag, since it's abbreviated anyway. The official title is still Dragon Quest XI.
I see the point in using 11 though. Never thought confusing low roman numbers would be a thing.

Just got an e-mail saying I should have this game by the end of the day. Original estimate was August 1 or August 2. For about $10 more than I would pay for a USA game at launch I'm getting an imported game 3 days after it's Japanese release. Based Amazon.jp. How they're getting this game to me from Osaka to New York this quickly for this cheap I have no idea.

Watching Shouta's playthrough. Looks so gud :3

Can't wait for the western release. I'll probably spoil the whole game by then but I dun mind.

Really like the sound of this. I appreciate the side stories in prior DQs, but it's sometimes hard for me to follow an rpg all the way to the end if there isn't a strong and relatively well paced character-driven throughline (particularly as an adult w/ kids and a demanding job - if I can play in big chunks, it doesn't seem to matter as much as long as gameplay is fun. But once I'm down to an hour or two a day or less, I need that narrative to keep me coming back).

Much as I love FF XII (and I've completed it twice), I've just run aground at Archades in Zodiac Age. Having lots of fun, but I know there aren't a whole lot of story beats left, and the dungeon crawling alone isn't a major motivator.

Just got an email saying I passed all my classes for the semester, so I'm officially on break.

Now I'll be able to play without worries.

I should be nearing 30 hours or so.

I managed to do the quest where you have to beat the wyvern dog with beast mode at night. First time I managed to get zone on the hero/Camus/Senya, the wyvern dog killed Camus before he could act. Second time I got it, Silvia killed the thing before Camus could act (stupid guest characters). Third time, finally. Sheesh.

It occurs to me that both of the most recent quests I did are going to be quite a bit more difficult to do in 2D mode, because battles are random and you can't choose what to encounter. I do think that certain encounters are relegated to certain parts of the map at times, though, and it seems like the wyvern dog always spawns at one particular spot in the desert in 3D mode, so maybe that'll help. But the gold cactus ball one? Lawd.

MP heal on level up makes this game rather too easy early to mid game. Leveling up is frequent enough that you can keep grinding forever without much regard for MP. Also, I wish all those stat ailment reduction accessories made a bigger difference tactically. No bosses have encouraged me to wear any of those. Other than the difficulty, loving every aspect of this game thus far. Replaying this on PS4 is going to be such a treat.

In general, DQ11 has no sense of resource management at all. Character inventories are enormous, they brought over the smaller MP restoratives from DQ10, and you still have the ability to restore MP by melee attacking with staves as in DQ9/DQ10. That plus the abundance of camps and full healing on level up means that MP should rarely if ever be an issue.

It's a bit of a bummer as a long-time fan, because the series started out with a keen focus on resource management. But I suppose people just don't enjoy that, so now it's not really a thing anymore.

Now my husband just needs to get home from work and we can get started!!!!

I mentioned in the VIII 3DS thread a while back that I wasn't a huge fan of levelling up restoring mp, I don't think any of my characters ever came close to running out in the game

I thought it added an element of strategy and challenge to the game so that's disappointing to hear. I always loved doing dungeons in DQ games with multiple floors because you had to be prepared with having enough healing herbs, antidotes, and manage your MP usage. If you didn't conserve you could end up in big trouble especially when you got to a boss fight.

Played for 6 hours today, I beat. Loved every second of it. Well, except for that hour where I had to repeat quests, find and kill one liquid metal and do some exploration twice, because I loaded the wrong save.

Remember kids, always finish your play sessions on the PS4 with a hard save, because it's way too easy to load your last regular save instead of the auto save (the cursor defaults to the former when launching the game). Well, I learned my lesson.

I think my highlight of today was the
medal academy
, really funny stuff.

For those interested - I updated my playthrough archive with today's streams.

I probably mentioned it in the thread before but the PS4 version's presentation is just out of this world. They really paid a ton of attention to what they wanted to convey and put a lot of effort into the animation to do so, particularly facial animations.

I picked up these in Akihabara yesterday...
KlNZfIM.jpg

You know, that fan looked extremely familiar to me and I believed I had one from a while ago, but I couldn't place it.

Looked in a drawer I rarely go into just now, and there were two. It's the same King Slime, but it says "DRAGON QUEST SUMMER FESTIVAL 2010" instead of "DRAGON QUEST XI". We got them on our honeymoon, either at the Square Enix Store or the DQ cafe. <3

Essentially upgrading the weapons.

Is it? I just unlocked the feature last night, but I believe it's possible to get a worse result than the one you うちなおした. Isn't it just a "re-roll" that consumes a different generic resource than the specific resources required to craft an entirely new one?

Stop hyping me up! :(

No, you can't get a worse result. The worst case is that it says you failed to redo, and you keep the item the same as before. Using the examine option in the forge when you're on track for a worse result just says "it's likely to be the same as before."

Stop making the wait even more unbearable than it is! :P

Get the Google translate app for your phone and then just hold it up to the screen. =)

I know it's not gonna be that accurate but I'm assuming the literature in DQXI isn't gonna be that difficult to decipher if the translation is poor?

This is very interesting.

I used it during Shouta's stream and while it wasn't accurate you could get the gist of what was going on. Definitely helpful for reading the menus though.

I think I've decided to go ahead and dedicate to one version at a time now. Going with 3DS 3D first!

... I reserve the right to change my mind, though.

Okay so I'm already going back on this. I just can't resist playing them all together! I'll just make the gap between switching larger. Just had Silvia join on 3DS 3D, time to play PS4 up to that point~

I hope this is sarcasm.

Kinda. It isn't entirely accurate but it does give you a general idea of what is going on with the story. It's quite helpful for navigating the menus though. So if you import the game and don't know any Japanese I would at least use the app for this. It does the translation in real-time using your phone's camera so you don't have to first take a screenshot and then use the app to translate it.

A few questions for the lucky ones:
-howms the exploration? Does the level design make you want to explore every nook and cranny?
-how are the quests?
-how's the weapon variety (in types) and character customization?
-how are the boss fights? Cool? Challenging?

I've done this with many games to great success, so it's not a ridiculous idea.

The yocchi side quest is more addictive than I thought it would be in the 3DS version lol. I wonder how the little guys are implemented in the PS4 version...are they only story related or is there also a game mechanic specific to them?

Yes
-how are the quests?
I haven't done many so not much that I can comment, they're a lot better than IX's at least.
-how's the weapon variety (in types) and character customization?
In looks character customization is limited in the way VIII was, 30 hours in I've found 5 costumes, not even for the whole cast, there are the skills though, but it doesn't change how the characters look.

Weapon variety doesn't seem any higher or lower than previous games.

-how are the boss fights? Cool? Challenging?
Cool, yes, challenging, no.
