Dragon Quest 11 (JP) |OT| whynotboth.gif

Where the hell is Humphrey? I just won the first battle in that arena thing. I am looking all over the place and I am probably ignoring the obvious.

is the japanese in this game always this easy to understand? (disclaimer, except for DQ: Builders I've never played a DQ before in japanese)

also, now I'm really interested in a screenshot of silvia talking, if anyone here could provide one :)

Yes, these games are made to be understood by elementary school kids.

IIRC you're supposed to stay at the inn. But otherwise check the orphanage?

Yeah stupid question, where is the orphanage. I am following the wiki and for the most part I am getting through easily but Google Translate on Japanese wiki isn't perfect.

Thanks for the fast reply, I literally went to throw in a load of laundry in my apartment and refreshed and the page and you replied. Much thanks.

Edit: Oh JESUS! *DURP* *DURP* *DURP*

I remember the japanese in DQ3 that I played for a few minutes in 2013 to be harder for me to understand...

but of course I've studied more since then

thanks aeana :)!

This old man NPC notices that we have a sexy young lady in our party, and he's obsessed with bunny girls. He desperately wants me to force Martina to dress up like a bunny girl so he can ogle her. And Martina is not included in this discussion at all.

There is a similar quest in DQX. It has to be a human player who dresses up in bunny suit in X though, either yourself or someone else in your party, so the consent is negotiated in that case.

Did you accept the quest? How did Martina react?

Plenty that sadly isn't DQXI...:( But the hype will quiet a bit in the months after launch and then normal life will resume and then DQXI will be ours too.

...

But, everyone seems to be talking about the main story when they talk about the scenario in here, does the game have strong vignettes too?

Been waiting to play another DQ game. This thread is making the wait hard. sigh... I hate waiting for localization.

I accepted the quest, and went to make the outfit. Martina said nothing at first, but eventually stormed off when I turned the quest in. Here's an album showing all of the ensuing dialog:

I know that's the intention, but this DQ actually has some pretty complex word play and difficult kanji. At least for me. Can elementary school kids really read 古今東西? 秘境? I had to look those up.

What a pervy dude. Hmph! In any case, I have a hard time believing a 10 year old can actually parse through that... Maybe I'm just dum.

You only have yourself to blame for putting her through that, lol. Enjoy your garterbelt accessory.

In X, even male characters can wear the bunny suit to clear the quest but you get the best reaction when it's an ogre female wearing it.

Man, I'm in the "post-game" but this feels like part 3 of the story more than post-game, lol. I totally dig it though. So in that respect, I'm going to save my final thoughts for after this but man, it really does feel like a 100 hour game.

My ability to stream is going to be hindered starting today so folks will have to see that stuff for themselves! =o

I think a few things may challenge a 6th grader, but the 3DS 3D version has furigana to help with that. I haven't been in 6th grade for a long time, but I'm not sure I've seen any non-kyouiku kanji in the game.

I started the ps4 version last night. Just wanted to have a quick look...that turned into playing for 3.5 hours straight! Such a beautiful game, and it is a wonderfully expansive and fun world to explore. I have played 12 hours of the 3DS version, but after playing the ps4 version I don't think I can go back.

Just want to point this out, Camus is pronounced as kamyu/kamu/カミュ
The "s" is silent, and the name's origin is French.

I,e, Albert Camus a French exisiential novelists (Read "The Plague", and "The Stranger", as well as the play script "The Fall", they're all great pieces of literature.)

Albert Camus is pronounced Alber Camu, though I think it is acceptable in English to pronounce the t in Albert.

That's why I've been calling him Camus. カミュ -> Camus isn't obvious to people, but I won't stand for Camille or whatever else other people have been coming up with.

The easy path would be to do a stereotypical limp-wristed femme kind of character, and I think that would be a really bad idea. He isn't treated with a lot of care in Japanese, but I don't expect any better from a group of old Japanese dudes. People in the west generally do expect better, though.

The way he talks and the comments of his later companions could be hard to translate into English in a non-offensive manner. Especially if they add VO for the overseas release.

Like coming up with a term of address for "Name"-sama-chan that doesn't sound goofy.

You want fabulous and camp, not the creepy Persona 5 stereotypes and gay panic stuff

Ah, got you. Thanks for the response.

I've watched a few lets play's and some people are pronouncing the S, which I dont really understand tbh because thats not how it is shown in the カタカナ and I just wanted to point out how it's pronounced for those that have also been viewing several videos and are confused by hearing different pronunciations. Haha.

I wonder where they got Camus from otherwise.

Oh, Google Translate seems to render it that way.

As someone who teachers sixth graders in Japan and have seen the kanji they are studying, I would agree they might have a few challenges, but they should be able to play the game without furigana with few or no problems. Also asking my wife who is Japanese, she says the kanjis listed in the post above most likely wouldn't be a problem for sixth graders. I've yet to come across a kanji or kanji combination in the game that a sixth grader wouldn't know. For younger audiences though the 3ds version with its furigana will be needed for them. Still for a lot older elementary school students, even fifty and fourth graders, I think will be fine playing the game with their kanji knowledge as it's at a good level for them. And in turn that makes it a good level for Japanese learners, although as many have said you might need to be at least jlpt level 3 to play with no problems.

Also I gotta say from what I have seen so far, I love シルビア. They seem like a very LBGTQ+ positive character. None of the main characters mocks them for using very effeminate language and manners and everyone rolls with it naturally.

Though I am unsure if I should refer to them as She/He/They since they do refer to themselves as female and I dont know if they're trans or identify as non-binary. For now I'll use general they/them/ze as I have been doing.

Anyway, It is a MUCH better representation of LBGTQ+ than what was presented in Persona 3, 4 and 5. No one as far as I know treats シルビア like a joke, they all seem to respect them and their identity and flamboyance. I dunno if this changes later on in the game but from about 11hours of gameplay it just seems very respectful, though I admit the character might be hard to localize in English without causing a lot of offense. I have faith that they'll do them justice though.

Oh, and I hate ベロニカ. Mainly because I hate
Loli's
. Why did SE put a
Loli
in Dragon Quest? :/ Or is that normal and DQVIII was an exception.

Disclaimer: I've only really played DQVIII

So I got Rou (Lowe?) and Martina and I’m feeling more confident now that the idea here seems to have been to make the cast (loosely) based on the DQ3 classes. Modern DQ improvements and conveniences aside - I don’t think most really want a Fighter that can’t do much beyond attack and use items nowadays - everyone could fall under one of the nine classes in 3 somewhat neatly, compared to the more hybrid-like characters and various advanced/alternative classes in later games. But I’m probably late to all this lol.

I haven’t gotten anyone that sorta fits as Merchant or Warrior yet but if you dig around in the menus
you can find that there’s an axe weapon type that I don’t think any of the current seven use
, so we’ll see how that goes.

Well, I think they used DQ3 as a base, but they made each of them a but more versatile. For instance, Lowe is a sage but he can use claws. Frankly, I'm finding it extremely difficult to decide which to go with regularly. The way character switching works on PS4 is actually a bit of a downside compared to 3DS, because it has a slight turn penalty after the first action has been taken, whereas on 3DS you can do it completely for free. And I find myself wanting to switch way more often than in any other DQ.

Oh a question because of the ensemble cast: how are experience points doled out to the party? Does everyone get experience or only the ones in the party?

Yeah I noticed that on the PS4 version when I wanted to swap in Silvia and had to wait first.

I guess it's a bit of a counterbalance so you can't swap someone in and immediately have them do whatever you swapped them in for in the PS4 version, but it kinda surprised me.

Havent seen it so far, can you change party line up as to where you can explore the world as another character other than MC like in Tales of games and Dragon Quest VIII? Ex. Putting Angelo/Yangus/Jessica first in line up to play as them outside battle/Playing as differnt characters in Tales of the Abyss?

Jeeez. The Nagimuna storyline is really something else. At first, I was disappointed because I was certain it was just yet another retread of a story that's been told in a previous DQ. I was mistaken. Horii's still got it.

She is awesome! I slaughter through battle after battle because of her attacking enemy groups. She reminds me of Little Red Riding Hood.

Is it really so bad that they have a child character? It's not like they sexualize her like she's a 1000 year old dragon like in so many other Japanese games with young females. I don't understand what your problem is other than she's a child.

And many DQ games have children characters.

Which trope is it? Helping Prince in a rite of passage? Frozen village?

Also, Veronica is not a Loli. She's a child.

Also, Camus is a French name, and it is S silent. It's sort of how Lucas from Mother 3 is supposed to be pronounced Luca. Katakana was Ryuka

No, although
the first one is in the game
. I'm talking about
one involving mermaids
.

As for your second line...
she's neither. She's a teenager who has had her age stolen. She's Senya's "older" twin.

In Dragon Quest 5, the hero's children join the party. They're way younger than Veronica.

That I found cool in that game. I mean the "family affair" first begins in II with your cousins and yourself fighting against evil but then you have yourself, your wife, and kids going up against evil in V. My favorite revenge battle has to be against Gema. Gema I feel like is more evil than Mildrath.

Oh man, why i didnt bought it digitally. Im still waiting for my order to be shipped from nippon-yasan after i payed it more than a week ago. Im thinking of cancel it and place a new one at solarisjapan, but first i need my money back and i have no answer from their customer service about this issue.
I want to play this game so bad. :(

Veronica is awesome. She's made me LOL a few times with her quips. Can't fathom how anyone could have a problem with her.

She reminds me a bit of Tsunade from Tengai Makyou Ziria.

If you want a game on as close to day one as possible you gotta go with Amiami or Amazon.jp, or at least play-asia; in my (admittedly one time) experience with Nippon-Yasan and Solarisjapan it took forever to actually ship my orders. I got a good deal for the things I bought, but usually their prices are much higher than other stores (at least on new items).

So what is the general consensus on DQ11? Is it good?

How does it stack against other DQ games in the series?

I am pretty hyped for it to be honest, waiting for it to be available on platforms I currently possess.

You can buy it digitally from Amazon JP, using your local credit card. That's what I did. It's better (and cheaper) than trying to find Japanese psn digital cards online and paying that way.

Yes, with the original battle music. Though at least for DQ1 the battles looked a bit too modern (looked like DQXI 2D mode) even if the town was in accurate famicom 2D.

That sounds really cool. I wonder how far they take this concept, like letting you venture into dungeons of the previous games, or how much of the previous game worlds they let you explore.

The 3DS stuff is so cool omg. DQ2 SNES~

Maaan, this game.

Going into the post game I didn't expect much, VIII's was fine, but I enjoyed the challenge more than anything, but on XI its incredible so far, I've just been passed some of the best moments in the game, without playing all that much.

Story is getting really interesting, it was hard to stop, but its just so late, I'm over 50 hours in, level 64.

I'm not even sure to call it post game, seems like they really meant to be a core part of the game, I guess sense seeing how in the ending
there's no The End screen
.

Can't wait to see more, the game just keeps on giving.

Would you guys say this is one of the strongest narratives in a DQ game?
This separately wrt both vignette and main story, I'd love to hear peoples' takes on. But I know it'll probably take a bit to digest that/even get far enough to judge.

I'm gathering people really like the main story from the comments. Aeana also had that titillating one about a vignette. (I couldn't unspoil that text, of course).

God I feel like a vulture asking after this repeatedly lol. I'm shameless :(.
