Dragon Quest 3 now available in English for Android and iOS

It's considered by many to be the best in the series, and it was the game with which the series exploded in popularity in Japan.
For which particular reasons? The music, graphics, combat, story?

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't checking the app store daily for this. I've never gotten around to finishing DQ3, even on my GBC. Looks like I'll get that taken care of now.

This is just great!

I have been looking forward to this. It's the only mainline DQ game other than VII that I haven't played and I have seen many, Many people over the years say that this is their favourite DQ. Possibly more so than any other numbered game I think (DQIV is my personal favourite) . I have high expectations for this game. Maybe I shouldn't, But I am definitely excited to play it.

No, they fixed the visuals for this game, it doesn't look like crap like DQ1 and 2. And it hasn't been dumbed down. Not sure why you'd think that. It's based on the feature phone version, which was based on the SNES version.

Isn't the SNES version dumbed down in difficulty compared to the NES version though?

Every time they do this, I keep wishing they'd release them on a platform I want to play games on, like Vita or 3DS or really anything but my iPhone.

Yes, but your complaints about that should be directed to 1996. The balance easing in the original remakes was generally for the better, anyway.

Also, it seems that vamp is the translation for the "sexy" personality, in case anybody was trying to get it.

Advice please: I love DQ and III is the only one I haven't played. I own the GBC version but don't have anything to play it on (my GBA is broken). I have an iPhone but generally hate virtual sticks. Have they been implemented well in other DQs on iOS? Or should I just ignore this new version and try to find a GBC or GBA?

It's not a virtual stick, it's a virtual dpad (4-way movement). It works as well as one could expect, for the most part. Considering it's an RPG and there is no need for quick movement precision, it should be fine for most people. But if you can't handle it at all, then don't bother I guess.

The translations aren't the same, though, so this might not be that helpful. The best personality in the game as far as I'm concerned is sexy/vamp for female characters. The male equivalent (lewd/whatever they called it in this translation) isn't quite as good.

Does this one control any better than 1? 1 I found was always misreading my inputs.

A little bit, because the framerate is better.

Oh damn, haven't finished 1 and barely started 2. This is the one I most wanted though, so I may just skip straight to it.

I bought Dragon Quest IV on iOS. It's a nice game although I only played one chapter so far.

Does DQ III for iOS have iCloud saving like IV does?

So I know this is a DQ3 thread, but I feel like I should play DQ2 before DQ3. I wrapped up DQ1 iOS a few months ago and was planning on just grinding through each chronologically...is that a decent idea or is it worth it to skip 2 and go straight to 3?

3 is much better than 2. Also while related in terms of plot 3 is a prequel that only really makes solid connections to 1.

It was pretty epic for a 1988 title, but that was the original famicom version.

The original might have been epic, but playing the GBC remake in 2014, I simply found it very charming (as DQ games usually are) and very neat in structure in regards to sidequests and the various vignettes. The world may be construed as static by today's standards, like an quaint interactive dollhouse. Honestly, I loved it.

I was wondering when this would make it over. I already have the other DQ mobile games on various platforms (aside from I and II which are a bit too rough to go back to imo), but i'm happy to finally get a chance to get this game. I admit its on a platform I usually don't care to buy much stuff for, but with this title I will make the plunge. I never finished it back when I played it on the NES ages ago, so i'm looking forward to the opportunity to finally get through it now.

I bought DQ1 on Android a few months ago. It's really hard to deal with the touch controls though.

Really wish Square would put these on a console or handheld.

In the SNES version enemies have cool little animations when attacking, which are not present in this version (they are completely static).

That is a bit of a bummer. Not a deal breaker for me personally, but yeah, I will definitely miss the enemy animations.

I always roll Solitary for my male hero.

Man, I'm really tempted to buy this game just for the personality test. This is one of my favorite Eastern RPGs ever (it's also the first "traditional" JRPG I ever played). Love how the world map resembles the real world.

I'd say, you should play 2 to get the full feel of the Loto Trilogy. If you were playing in chronological order than its III, I, and II. You're missing out by not playing II.

Is this worth getting if I own the snes & gbc versions?

I own the NES, Japanese SNES, Japanese Wii and GBC versions and I re-purchased this for iPhone. This game is always fun to play on whatever platform its on.

I was waiting for this one. I really liked it on GBC. Conversely, it was my first foray into WRPG mechanics with class and character customization.

i always wondered this but surely someone involved with the dragon ball series is/was involved with this games right? this games are hitting the wrong nostalgia strings lol

It's not the same. There are no battle animations, and you don't move as fast. There are other small differences, but the balance is the same for the most part.

Thats dumbed down/gimped in my definition. What a shame, this looks gorgeous. I wonder if its iPhone6 Plus optimized?

Had no idea they were connected like that, good to know.

They are related, but do not play them in the order described. DQ3's impact is best if you played at least DQ1 first.

I never said that wasn't dumbed down, except you missed the part where the "dumbing down" part of the conversation was related to difficulty. You decided not to bold that part so I'm certain you saw it.

I'm guessing there's no cloud saving on Android? One big reason I probably won't get it or wait for a sale otherwise.

Love this game though and was actually thinking of starting it up again on GBC.
