Dragon Quest VIII announced for 3DS

Never finished the ps2 version. It doesn't surprise me since DQ VIII characters are now voiced in that heroes game and Japan never got anything like the U.S. PS2 version. Hopefully it's considered for release here since it's already partially localized already.

So much salt over the platform of choice. Portable > HD for most RPGs all day every day. Glad it's coming to 3DS.

I haven't had much exposure to the series though, but I've been wanting to for awhile. Which of the DS ones would be recommended?

All of them a good, but play in order.

4, 5 (series creator fav), 6 & 9.

I'm wondering why SE announced it without any conference or even countdown website..
Are they trimming marketing cost this year?

DQ5 is a great game (it helped inspire pokemon with monster raising)
DQ4 is a good start though, I havent played DQ6 yet and DQ9... well you missed the big time people were playing it.(weakest story of the bunch in my opinion but i had the most fun with it)

In my honest opinion, IX isn't good. It just isn't. I really didn't like it. A lot of people will tell you the exact opposite, but I thought IX was not only a mediocre Dragon Quest game, but a mediocre game all around.

IV, V, and VI on the DS, however, are all amazing games.

Is this really worth of one?

The only DQ event that might happen this year is some anniversary event or when they announce XI.

DQ XI confirmed multiplatform. They'll just make a version for PS3/PS4 and one for 3DS/Mobile. Both versions will have the same story. The PS3/PS4 version will have better grpahics and some console specific features. The 3DS version will have streetpass integration along with 3D. Mobile will be mobile.

Horii said no mobile.

But they'll all share something in common, japan exclusive.

Well I gave up along time ago on localizing DQ VII, Monsters and now this. Every SE announcement that I hear of SE remaking a DQ game gets a meh and sigh from me unless its being released West.

Sweet! I've been on a DQ spree lately with DQ Heroes, and also just picked up DQ Monsters 1 and 2 for 3DS thanks to the budget re-releases (still have my original GB carts too!). DQ VIII is an amazing game and I'm definitely putting my pre-order in asap; what a pleasant surprise.

Didn't DQ9 (the only one of those properly marketed) sell over a million in the west?

Remakes / ports are just quick cash ins, you just can't expect them to be heavily marketed to have a chance of selling well. Western Dragon Quest VIII and IX sales aren't the best metrics for measuring the potential of hypothetical releases like Dragon Quest VII Remake or this new announced Dragon Quest VIII.

Why do fans get blamed? Fans are the ones that buy the games in the first place! I got DQ4/5/6/9/Joker 2 just like I got Yakuza/2/3/4 so what blame could I ever possibly receive o.o?

And how can we explain the drop from Dragon Quest V to Dragon Quest VI, or from Joker to Joker 2? Well, maybe you are right and most fans bought them, problem is that there aren't too many to begin with :P

If anything it will be PS4 only or PS4 and 3DS.

Horii has already said it will be on consoles, or rather he would like it be on consoles I should say.

I do have to wonder now about Verendus comment about a DQ game getting HD remake coming.

Will it still be 8 or be the PS2 version of 5.

Looking forward to the new stuff. Yangus in Japanese was weird in DQH. :(

I have to agree, his voice just did not seem right... Out of all the times for the "Hasegawa" voice to not fit, that most def was one of them unfortunately. :/

I wonder if they'll put in grottoes to this game as the streetpass functionality. It'll probably just be an immigrant town or something.

Wonder how they will implement Morrie as a playable character. Can't wait to wreck shit in that Monster Arena again with the three slime team, Ultrus The Ultra Slime was awesome.

I'd love to think that the success of Monster Hunter in the west makes them want to give Dragon Quest another shot but that probably won't happen.

Still salty we never got DQ7.

Wait, he did? Or are you talking about the quote where he says something about how he would like to see it on a big screen or something like that? I really don't see how people are talking that as confirmation of a console version of XI. I get the conclusion, but it's far from a confirmation of that, in my opinion.

Square Enix E-Store offers Yangus(Am I right?) weapon called CandyKane(Scythe).
This weapon always give only 1 damage to any enemy. They say this is good for metal type enemy (ex.Metal slime)

If I need to buy Japanese version, I'll buy E-Store version.

Tales from my ass basically.

Edit:

Saw the thread title and immediately knew the thread would become a graveyard.

At the same time I don't think the DQIV-VI remakes are the best metrics either despite also being remakes. Getting all of them in a row so quick, and using the old DQVII engine for visuals were both things that probably hurt sales potential and don't really apply with VII (or now VIII). DWII also bombed in the west, yet DQVIII and DQIX both went on to be million sellers.

The mobile ports are doing even worse than the DS remakes by all accounts though, which is worrying. I think a lot is going to be pinned on how well Heroes does in the west.

I'm talking about where he said he'd like to see the game on the big screen, so yes. I think it is very likely it will come out on consoles, but it also isn't definitive just yet.

They may even wait for NX, whatever that may be.

I think XI still has a long ways off until it is released in Japan. They like to take their sweet time. :P

This is awesome news. I sure hope it gets localized sooner rather than later.

You mean sooner rather than never, right? :P

He as said this if it helps:

“People say that home consoles don’t sell anymore in Japan, but once the smartphone boom settles I think home consoles will be the focus of attention again. It’s true that with smartphones and handhelds you have the benefits of taking them anywhere with you or watching TV as you play, but I think fans of video games are still feeling the desire to play games on the big screen. Also, with handhelds because the controller and the screen is on the same device it makes it painful to play for long periods of time. Playing with a home console controller and being able to move your hands around is more comfortable"

I will never understand people who say portable is best for RPGs.

Nothing is better on a 3 inch screen.

Some people enjoy portable stuff. Some people enjoy things on TVs. People are different, people have different standards. There, now you may be into the world with this knowledge and learn amongst the masses.

I remember something about Square giving Nintendo the choice between localizing DQ7 and BD and not both. Nintendo went with BD. Need to find the source for it so hold on.

Edit: Here we go

Shockingalberto will have to spend the rest of his GAF years trying to erase this myth.

Tell me when you have to work 9-5, pay bills, cook, take care of your kids at night, leaving 1 hour to play an RPG on the big screen before hitting the hay for work. I get most of my gaming done on the skytrain for an hour, before walking to work. Portable gaming is best for RPG's

None of DQ games are on eastern E-Shop, right? I can't find them there!

I don't think any DQ game is on a digital service outside the mobile ports.

Okay, well, I guess it does seem like he's looking at home consoles. I still wonder if business sensibilities will override his personal preference, though. I know he has a strong influence over the franchise, but I assume that Square ultimately has the final word on where XI ends up.

Not that I have any issues with a console XI or anything like that. But, business-wise, it's a pretty risky move it seems to me unless it is both portable and home console.
