Dragon Quest VIII iOS final version gameplay footage

I really like the idea of playing these old school RPG on a smartphones. But Square Enix seems to really make a ton of efforts to fuck up their games/ports. Why did they choose a game with 3D third person gameplay? Why does it runs like shit? Why is it so expansive?

It doesn't seem too complicated for me, just copy pasta the control scheme of the DS Zelda games (muuuuuuch better than these crappy virtual pads and actually adapted to touch screen devices), don't fuck up the artstyle, put it at a decent price and I'm in. Is it too much to ask for?

Also, where are the western versions of the 3DS DQVII port?

Is this coming to America?

Hahhahahahaha

:(

Edit: To clarify.

1. This is an unlikely localization because, IIRC, DQ8 is running via a cloud streaming service, which is why it looks like it runs like shit at times.
2. They actually did register a few names that highly suggest DQ1 / 2 / 3, if nothing else, are coming to the US.
3. I still doubt it, since SE US/EU has given up on anything that doesn't break 500k-1m sales, and DQ doesn't do that without advertisements, which they refuse to do / are too incompetent to do well. The mobile division may be immune to this stupidity, who knows?

Dragon Quest X is the one that will run on a cloud gaming service. This is just a bad port.

No surprises here. I'm not a big fan of the controls. The way you move around and adjust the camera seems really awkward. Framerate seems also bad but this could be caused by using a weak phone. Not a big fan of the format. DQ8 is among my favorite RPGs ever and I want a proper remake, not this garbage. Maybe if FFX/x-2 do well at retail, SE could be tempted to bring this game to PS3 or PS4 in north America? Nothing would make me happier then to play this gem again... Just not like this.

too bad. postgame dungeon bosses is where it was at.

dat story revelation afterwards about who the hero truly was.

tears.
If my PS2 still worked I might have finished it by now. But I couldn't get passed its horrible IQ on HDTV's. (Ico and SOTC had the same problem) I waited all last generation for a PS3 version and would have bought one just for that game but it never came.

The camera control looks frustrating for most Android devices. Considering the back/home/menu buttons are located near there. Sounds like a lot of accidental presses waiting to happen.
iOS also has the bottom be an up swipe for control center. So I could see a lot of accidental activations there too. Though iOS lets games disable instant activation. Still.

DQ8 on vita would be lovely.
My favourite jRPG ever.
I'd still rather it come to Wii U than iOS. But I'd buy a PS4 if it came to that as a HD rerelease. That game would look amazing in HD. Hell, I'd even buy a Vita for it.

This would suck. If it never came to the US, I'd probably have better luck getting a PS2 emulator running on my 15" Retina Pro and running it there. But I'd love to have it on a console. Wii U for the GamePad, 3DS for portability, I'd buy a Vita or a PS4 if I had to, and would buy day one on iOS if it were Universal. What is a "cloud streaming service"? Aside from a bullshit reason to not bring something to the western audience. DQ8 is literally the only Dragon Quest game I want. Just like FFVI is the only Final Fantasy game I like. I would be perfectly happy if those were the only two RPG games I ever got. (Aside from Mario RPG which needs a damn Wii U VC update pronto. Oh, and EarthBound which I already have on Wii U. Which is why I'd love DQ8 on the Wii U along with FF6. It'd be like the perfect RPG Quadfecta for me.)

That's why ppl shouldn't even consider buying this when it got localized, but I guess they don't care.

Why should I care if I don't have a 3DS? I look forward to playing DQ8 again, will buy when released next week in Japan.

Looks like it has thoughtful controls and will be great for my train ride to work.

I get the impression Japan likes one handed gameplay.

Wouldn't surprise me even a little bit if Square made a port that can run on a 4S and didn't bother adding any tweaks to make it run smoother on anything better. So it's stuck in portrait mode to cut down on what needs to be rendered and optimized for a blazing 15 fps.

Later on they can release an ipad version that runs landscape that's set to 30fps and that version maybe down the road ends up getting ported to Vita , download only.

I still have some faint hope that Nintendo will step in to localize Dragon Quest 7 for 3DS as well as figuring out what to do with dragon quest X , Square clearly is in no rush to do anything with either of them on their own. This sudden extra push to mobile for some of their older games (even DQ8 came out almost 10 years ago) demonstrates that they are concerned with appealing to their home market above any other market because outside of the 3DS and cellular mobile, gaming has gone extinct in Japan.

Well,
Con
  • Clunky as all hell
  • My most hated of graphical defects, pop-in
  • It struggles to display numbers during battles
  • Load times
  • Aspect ratio
  • Certainly price
  • Already own it
Pro
  • It's DQVIII
  • and...
Why. Why would you play a game like that.

Maybe this is (potentially) really good for one-handed gamers?

I do kind of have a thing for Jessica.

Good freaking lord, this thread is 24 hours old and yet I get beaten by Jessica's whip by 4 min (hey, wait a minute...) thanks to making my lists. Oh well, Black Door you have a good tastes.

Changes in gaming habits != gaming is extinct.

I imagine it being very comfortable on a Note 3, but the framerate is garbage.

I cant see that being too comfortable with one hand, seems like a dropped phone waiting to happen. Also with the camera controls so close to those touch sensitive buttons they are prone to being pressed.

I definitely will be passing up on this IOS game...SE can rot in hell for all mobile game releases now. Hope Sony or Nintendo bring DQVII and DQVIII out west for portables, as they'd be having to foot the bill to publish the games and make even put in some money to porting them to there systems. SE have really gotten sooooooo lazy at improving on DQVIII, why bother releasing that turd to mobile users?

Oh my god this looks abysmal. About 20 FPS, shit controls and the MIDI music.

Fuck off and DIAF, SE

Girl playing it has impeccable nails.

I'm playing through this right now on PCSX2. It runs awesome, looks stupidly awesome and you can take the FPS limiter off when you want to do alchemy. iOS version is not appealing at all and the music is weird to boot. Maybe I'm the wrong market though, I never see the appeal of these types of games on a phone, I mean you need a pretty long commute to make this worthwhile IMO.

I actually like portrait gameplay as one of my favorite games is Pixel Dungeon on Android, but the frame rate and pace of battles is unbearable.

I was sorta interested in this if it were going to be fixed up a bit from the unimpressive earlier footage, but it running like that on a 5S is a huge buzz kill.

SE isn't willing to localize anything while Nintendo sometimes is. I still think DQVII 3DS is more likely than DQVII or DQVIII iOS/Android.

I'm thinking Nintendo will see how the west reacts to BD.

If BD is successful, then Nintendo will probably go ahead with localizing the rest of the 3DS games that Square is too lazy to even touch.

DQVIII was one of the most annoying RPGs I ever played. Massive attack of random encounters combined with huge worlds to explore, not much to find in it and long loading times. No thanks.

That's true and one of the worst offenders of the game.

I don't really get who buys these games? They run bad, look bad, often control bad and they're overly expensive.

But apparently they sell enough to make SE boatloads of money and cause them to focus more on mobile?

Who are the people buying these games?

Shame about the framerate. I'm still buying if it comes to the West though. Even a bad port of DQVIII is still amazing.

I think there's a very large group of people who doesn't really mind spending $5, $10, or $15 at a time. Like when Megaman 2 came out on iOS. There was NO WAY that was going to be good. But people were like oh well whatever and bought it. Take that and multiply it by the user base and you have a few million dollars of pure profit, probably.

Oh i didn't know that.I thought they changed it deliberately.Anyway it really sucks compared to the Godly PAL version.

You don't want the godtier OST though because I think they streamed it off the disk. Loading times got a lot longer.

After watching the video, I think I finally confirmed that I can't get into the series because of the music.

If you don't like this then you are a bad person. :p

We did pay a price for getting the orchestral soundtrack though, as I heard the Japanese version played faster.

Well if that's true then i was more than happy to pay that price.:) The soundtrack elevated the game's atmosphere to Godtier levels for me.

Hypothetically, would a ps3 version with orchestral music play as fast as the original japanese version?

If it's done well I don't see why not. The original game wasn't designed with an orchestral soundtrack in mind and was tacked on later for the Western versions.

There is so much slowdown during battles that I can't even fathom how this would be playable. Considering the Project FLARE tech that Square recently showed off, I'm surprised that they didn't wait until they could integrate that with what we see here.

Square just seems to be in this odd place right now where it's tech has significantly grown, but there doesn't seem to be anybody with the good and common sense to USE it anywhere. Which I suppose is better than having crappy tools and using them in many crappy games (*cough* Crystal Tools).
