Dragon's Dogma combat videos (ranger and mage classes)

I liked the touch of detail on the 3rd ranger vid where he's striking flint on the arrows to 'ignite' them before shooting the. Don't know if I've ever seen that before in a game. Neat.

Ah OK, what a relief.

I played this at San Diego Comicon and had a hard time fighting a harpie who I could get one hit on every 30 seconds because it would constantly fly out of reach and the area was pitch dark. The memories of that, combined with this video had me pulling my hair out.
I remember watching some demo where the player and his entire party got incapacitated by a group of harpies for a good while. The best part was the harpies just kept flying around singing their song as loud as they could, so loud that at one point it sounded like someones speakers were gonna break.

Similar to dark souls with mages being boring as shit, so probably just play as a strider. The hell is a strider anyway?

I really hope the game turns out well, I really want to like it.

I feel like I'm watching different videos than everyone else.

They all seem really slow and boring. Obviously different degrees of such (Mage looks very very bland), but even the Ranger's gameplay didn't seem very enticing.

The animations are nice, but seems very lifeless on whole.

I'm kind of the same way. Except I thought the Ranger didn't look good at all. Kind of made me think 'Koei game'

Ya, its no monster hunter, but I have hope, sorta.

Also the game visually reminds me too much of oblivion, obviously not as ugly, but not a great look.

I'm not really sure what to think of this. I want to be excited as it looks cool, but capcom has done an awful job actually showing it. Putting out videos of immortal enemies, and just beating on them makes the game look alittle boring.

They should release videos of someone just exploring the world, and fighting as they come across creatues, and beasts. Pinning an enemy to a rock, and doing the same attack over, and over again does not do much for me.

Game looks fucking awesome. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of the class abilities.

I love the little details, like the lizard that does a stop drop and roll because he's on fire.

They've shown that.

I still can't believe they decided against online. Mh clone would be money maker.

Why would they make a clone of a game they already make? That seems like kind of a dumb thing to do.

Striders look like they're supposed to be similar to Rangers, but rely more on short distance traps and snares.

oh wow, that...that actually doesn't look bad. I love these type of RPGs but were skeptical about Capcom handling this considering their downward track. But this looks not half bad. Hm. Maybe will buy day 1

um no

If anything this honestly reminds me of classic Capcom art. Character models in particular give me a Shadow of Rome vibe

Just keep in mind that it isn't an RPG. Capcom themselves are calling it an "open world high fantasy action game".

Shadow of Rome was a great fucking game. I just realized I don't own a copy of that...

Not the characters, they actually look somewhat competent, the environments, they all just look so lifeless and green. The deadish forest in the strider video wasn't too bad though.

Capcom can call it what it want, it has all the trademarks of an RPG as far as we can tell. What would suddenly make this game exempt?

I hadn't taken this game seriously before but after seeing those trailers, I might start to consider it, looks awesome!

Final Fantasy Advent Children isn't a movie, it's "non-interactive software".
Dead Space Extraction isn't a rail shooter, it's a "guided first-person experience".

True true and I really wonder how it's gonna be to run around in it. Everything we've seen has been in sort of a vertical slice/demonstration glimpse

This is not the same thing. You don't level up in Dragon's Dogma. I'd be happy to call it an RPG, but it has no leveling.

Monster Hunter doesn't have leveling, but people still call it an RPG.

How is MonHun an RPG? whatever. At this point, people just call things RPGs because they "feel" like RPGs.

Loving the graphics, looks impressive, RE5 comes to my mind (minus the bloom)

The game has a sort of Dark Souls-ish feeling to me. I love the idea of Japanese companies taking on western fantasy.

I do really like the PAWN system. The gameplay videos look essentially like Skyrim with a proper party system.

In my opinion, the RPG label will change not too far in the future, it will stop being about stats number customization etc and being more of a description o the "spirit of the game" (Role playing, epic quests, tactical approach) but not a genre with defined mechanics per se.

That three part video on gashumax's youtube channel is really worth watching. It shows a lot of the open world stuff.

So from the wikia i get there are 9 classes.
And the game has one main hub a Big city and zones like amalur?

And Dam capcom the MT Framework is turning up some impressive games.

and they are horribly wrong. Crafting and equiping gear does not make one an RPG. Its an action game that requires skill first and foremost. There is no character progression what so ever, same with dragons dogma, you pick a class, and that class has a set amount of skills, like 2 or 3, and it doesn't seem like you ever get any more.

There is MH on 360/PS3? If they don't want to make the original at least put online into clone.

If they had any desire to put MonHun on 360/PS3, they would put MonHun on 360/PS3. Nothing is stopping them. They certainly didn't have to make a whole new IP with a giant dev team to do that.

Sorceror or Mage. I always go with the magic-tossing bookworm in these games.

The mage abilities look pretty awesome.

I'm hoping one of the classes is a casting/melee hybrid.

Agreed.

If MonHun is an RPG, then Zelda definitely is.

I'm curious as to the background behind the no co-op. Was this a technical limitation they tried to implement but just couldn't get working, along the lines of Darksiders 2? I remember those developers wanted to integrate 4-player co-op but they said it just wasn't technically feasible. On the other hand Lost Planet 2 had 4-player co-op but that was much more linear and closed off in terms of environments if I recall correctly.

If it was a conscious design choice, does anyone know the reasoning behind it? I find it hard to believe they would look to make what seems to be a Western Monster Hunter and then say co-op doesn't fit. Isn't that one of the primary selling points of the franchise in the first place? Why would you remove that from the formula? Or is this a case of everyone saying its like Monster Hunter but it's actually 'standard' rpg fare?
