Dragon's Dogma SPOILER THREAD | Once Upon a Pawn

This is a thread dedicated to Dragon's Dogma story discussion and freely sharing your favorite screenshots from any stage of your adventure.

Though this is technically a spoiler thread, I humbly ask those who have completed the wakestone collection quest to tag any true ending spoilers for the time being. Many will migrate here upon entering postgame, not completing it, so please be mindful of these individuals. You are free to openly converse about anything prior to that point, and this restriction will likely be lifted after more time has passed.

You don't need to spoiler tag anything anymore. If you have yet to start NG+, proceed with caution. Be ever vigilant, Arisen.

Now, let us begin.

best game I've played all year. Deep engrossing and super fun. Easily in the 90s review wise.

My Arisen is gay. LOL
The game's ending was actually supersatifying - both times. Seeing the
guy from the start of the game as your end game boss makes this circular sense. Which completed the story arc
Really quite clever.

Is there anything in the bottom left of the map? I ran all over it and its just blah. Also, I'd pay for DLC that adds map areas. (SE map via boat?).

I will post this pic that I took shortly. It cracked me up. You will see why. :)

Yeah I just got to "post game" and figure there's still more to do for an ending

Can I still view the ending without going into NG+? I still have to collect the shards, so I'm probably going to avoid this thread until I finish this

In the endgame there is a great but dangerous dungeon to collect full wakestones in. Everfall.

I never really wandered outta the city post game too - sent the entire time in everfall... If anyone knows of significant events in the over world, post please ;)

I heard there are various updated encounters and loot drops throughout. Will venture out on my second playthrough there. I spent all my time in Gran Soren too.

branny, you said in the OT that the Brine is never explicitly explained, but they give you enough information to speculate about it. Do you remember where you found that info?

Man gran soren has become a dangerous place again
KuGsj.gif

They really should've made the main scenario a bit shorter than it is or write a bit more on the characters, the world could've been a bit better designed, the path between Gran Soren and Encampment is the worst.

Without all the corridors I think the backtracking complaints would've been a bit less, and adding in a few camps or a town or two for changing jobs and managing items would've helped tremendously

Edit: woops I mean Gransys has become a dangerous place again! not gran soren

I think they really wanted you to get attached to Gran Soren so that you'd be more concerned when shit hit the fan.

I think I might have fucked up my NG+ travelling ease. Left the portcrystal out - I'm going to assume; its gone. FUCK!!! and now I will only have 1 again. :( I haven't checked my inventory - as I just wandered into Gran Soren after that 1st slow ass escort the cow mission.

But I'm thinking yeah; should have had that portcrystal in my inventory :(

NG+ is amusing. You're so overpowered. I do wish I hadn't started yet as I was saving to buy that super bow in the dungeon. Had the money too. AAaayyyye.

re:brine. I think they wrote some shit up so they don't have you wandering into the ocean. limit the world you know

i spent 1 million for 5 brandnew portchrystals and thinking about where to put them in gransys... i think the camps are a good place, one at bluemoon and one maybe at shadow fort...

I had an odd disparity in my endings.

For the ending-that-really-isn't-the-ending my Arisen ended up paired off with the Duchess. When I reached the ending-that-really-is-the-ending my Arisen
or pawn-who-is-now-the-Arisen, rather
ended up paired off with Madeleine. And Madeleine just acted like she had been there all along. I get the feeling she bumped off the Duchess and decided to take her place while I was base-diving/spelunking in Gran Soren.

She's a bit of a scary woman, that Madeleine. Scary, but decisive.

She knows what she wants. And she won't let anyone stand in her way.

Coming this summer.

Madeleine. Rated R. Starts Friday June 11th.

Sorry for the unfunny post. How can I make my assassin a broken asshat?

Madeleine is the hero that Gransys deserves. To hell with the Arisen.

Finally got to postgame and had Asalam the inn keeper as love interest -_-"
I think it's because of the escort quests, random gifts and infinite number of times using him for storage facilities...

Now he's all the way back at Cassardis in my home...Quite annoying given how he's the only person that can change vocations and no storage in Gran Soren sucks...(OR is there any other storage there? I haven't gone back yet).

Yeah, I was loving post-game and thought that I had already beat it. I figured getting the 20 Wakestones was just to escape and go on to NG+, but got to thinking there was more to it than that. I was going to hang around post-game and explore the far more dangerous world a bit. But after clearing the chambers and killing the Ur-Dragon, I of course had way more than enough Wakestones and just wanted to see what would happen.

What a trip, and absolutely one of the coolest and most unexpected real endings ever. Only thing is that
when I heard my female pawns voice coming out of my character's mouth I could not help but laugh a bit.
But wow, say what you want about the story. What it leads up to and ultimately finishes off with is pure classic in my eyes. Just an original and creative as hell game.
Even the book with all of the details in the credits is amazing.

I got the princess as love interest, I never did any escort for her, my affinity must've been really low for the other npcs.

I did escort maxmillion and gave him a few gifts, and the other chick a bunch of cloudwine when she's all depressed and about to leave

It's a bit weird to have a spoiler thread and require us to use spoiler tags for a bit.

It is indeed. All of these people in post-game thinking there is nothing else but the Everfall Chambers and more dangerous world, lol. Even if you are in post-game, tread carefully in this thread. As you are not done yet.

yeah, so did your pawn sacrifice him/herself so that you could live

or do you sacrifice yourself and grant your pawn life...just in your body or something

the talk with selene at the end got me confused as to which occurred

Is the Dukes hair falling out? if you go into his office while he's there you can gather 8 tufts of hair from him..And WHERE IS THE DUKES MAIN PAWN?

you died, and your pawn took your features.

The way I interpreted the ending was
that the whole thing was about breaking the whole Arisen cycle. Savan became the Seneschal after becoming an Arisen presumably by using the Godsbane on the previous Seneschal, you become an Arisen and ultimately use the Godsbane on Savan to become the new Seneschal, you eventually get tired of running around Gran Soren and Cassardis as an invisible ghost throwing people off of high places and feeding them to the Brine and use the Godsbane on yourself with no successor, effectively ending the whole Arisen -> Seneschal cycle.

Your pawn then inhabits your body and gets to live out the remainder of the life you would have had if you hadn't gotten sidetracked by having a dragon eat your heart. Presumably this is a reward for your pawn's loyal service, since from Selene's sidequest it seems like escaping pawn-hood is pretty desirable.

They never really elaborate on the whole pawn thing, but I got the impression that being a pawn was a purgatory of sorts. I would've rather liked them to expand on the pawns beyond "Pawns come from the Rift, they need people to order them around."

WHERE IS THE DUKES MAIN PAWN?

Feste.

W,w,what? How did you discover this?

Also, this might be a good thread to bring up that inaccessible area inside Cassardis's well. It has a name, and you can see it just beyond a few roots impeding your progress, but you can't go there. DLC placeholder?

Why else would the duke keep him around? Now you can enjoy the mental image of Feste slowly withering away of ennui after the duke's death, his only purpose in life now gone.

The game never says Feste is the duke's pawn, for the record.

Ah, I suppose that could make sense. Feste seems to have an awful lot of personality for a Pawn. That said, he is exceedingly small and weird-looking, as most created Pawns are wont to look.

Well the Fool seems to have more personality than most pawns as well, and he's presumably the Dragon-Forged's pawn. Selene, too, develops a bit more of a personality. Maybe pawns whose masters die or make the sacrifice to the dragon become a bit more independently-minded.

Or maybe the duke, in his pre-duking days, sat Feste down in the pawn-teaching chair and made some very... unfortunate choices.

Capcom really missed out on a golden opportunity when they didn't let you enter the Duke's Demesne as a Seneschal-ghost. That's where all the people I wanted to throw off of tall things were.

How the frack do i get to access Dukes Manche? I get no where with the duchess, i don't think she's down with the swirl, so she isn't coming on to me -__-

It's up to you guys if we should change the spoiler rules. The nature of the game creates a couple tiers of spoiler territory. I think it's a hassle to tag what we will probably be talking about most in here, but I also wanted this thread to be a place where people in postgame can hang out.

It'd be unfair to those in the OT to keep posting pictures of felled Ur Dragons, the Everfall, and the changed sky, whether or not you think they're spoilers. I repeatedly found myself holding back screenshots because of this. At the same time, I didn't want to leave postgame for a while.

I'd also like story discussion to be concentrated here instead of poring through multiple pages of the OT for everyone's individual reaction posts.

It was a quickly created topic to discourage the OT from filling up with too much objectionable content, so if you'd like this to become a place where we don't need to spoiler tag at all, please voice that. edit: NVM.

branny, you said in the OT that the Brine is never explicitly explained, but they give you enough information to speculate about it. Do you remember where you found that info?
With some mental gymnastics, you can rationalize its existence with information provided to you right before NG+.

Damn!

I'm in new game+ changed vocationthe second time and stored some items and there it is again, the affinity sound at gran soren inn. That's BS, not a single present...

I've updated the OP after some consideration. You don't need to spoiler tag anything now. I apologize for any problems the original rule may have caused. People are still talking about postgame crap in the OT, so we will use this thread for pictures and spoiler free-for-all.

I'm totally speechless. Everything about that ending was perfect. The whole thing was such a deliciously meta fairy tale. And Capcom was 100% aware of this because even the credits took the form of a storybook.

Any little oddity was explained away (the thing about pawns and even the people in the game world being machinations brought into existence by the player--brilliant, even if it's just an easy way to cover your ass). Some game mechanics were integrated in the best possible ways (walking around doing nothing and being bored so ending it by killing yourself; your pawn's multiple selves coalescing at the last minute). The player ultimately being revealed as the embodiment of free will...omg. Speaking of which, you end up being "God" on several levels (bringing the game world to life; watching over it; God in the eyes of your pawn; the model that pawn lives by after inhabiting the shell you leave behind as you exit the game). Man, even creating your customized characters can be explained by this logic. I love how the story becomes what it was all along--a story about that tirelessly devoted pawn you take care of throughout the whole journey. He/She gets a bittersweet ending that's both bizarre and unforgettable, sharing it with the "person" your essence had the most effect on (highest affinity NPC). The story is about breathing the spirit of life into a perpetual world, being that spark that sets everything into motion (even if it's a motion destined to continue forever). I love the way everything so seamlessly circles around despite being readily apparent throughout the entire game. It's a cycle that exists because it's a videogame.

And is that quote in the beginning actually talking about gaming in general? Mind blown... This game's story had no right being that amazing. Wow.
These were my initial impressions of the ending.

The game's ending was actually supersatisfying - both times. Seeing the guy from the start of the game as your end game boss makes this circular sense. Which completed the story arc Really quite clever.
The neat thing is you supposedly fight other arisens who have beaten the game when you get to that point again in NG+. If you've played Demon's Souls, this will be eerily familiar.

I had an odd disparity in my endings.
Mine went from the Duchess to the Innkeeper. I don't even want to know how that happened. *shudder* I wanted Julien both times, though, so I guess that's what NG+ is for.

Her companion lady should give you a quest to rescue her. I can't recall when/what triggers it, but that's how you get it.

I got the Duchess and then Madeline. I'd like to get Mercedes, but she always ends up losing that fight and getting all sad.

Clear the Greatwall quest where you have to fight those Salvation guys, but before fighting the dragon go back back to the castle garden and talk to Madeline. She will give you a quest to rescue Aleinore from Duke's manse. Make sure your affinity with Aleinore isn't high or you won't get that quest.

oh, cool, i was stil trying to get an invite to her room and watch the duke get his sexual axphyxiation fetish on.

Did anyone else feel like the Duke was going to murder you when he was taking you to the treasury?

Because of how (purposefully?) janky the game is, there was always so much tension interacting with him after the strangling incident. You didn't know if he just wasn't talking to you about it or if he simply couldn't remember.

And lol @ his pawn being Feste. Even though I don't think it's true, I'm going to treat it as fact. Who else could it be? When I walked away from the dragon battle, I don't remember seeing my pawn anywhere in the bad ending.

This is Feste's background information (courtesy of the official YouTube channel) for anyone curious:
Feste was born in a small farming village in Meloire, to a large family who worked the fields without rest. It was in no way an easy life. Because a male child could succeed the family name and would be a great aid to the farm once grown, Feste's arrival was joyous and everyone showered love upon him. He was well cared for and even spoiled. However, after a number of years it became apparent that Feste was not a normal boy: he never appeared to grow any older. The family had no money for a doctor, so could only hope that his growth was simply slower than that of other people, but years later, Feste's body remained that of a child. He could never help in the fields if he did not get any bigger, yet still had to be fed as much as anyone else. Additionally, being spoiled had made Feste a proud and arrogant boy. He threw tantrums if he did not get his meals on time, but made no effort to do any work himself. His birth now seemed a curse. One night, when their son was asleep, they looked down upon his childlike face and pressed a rag soaked in sedatives to it. Tears unchecked, they gave their son to the slave trader.

Feste was sold next to a troupe of players. Looking like a child, Feste was forced to become a jester, learning all sorts of tricks and skills as required. Amid these trials, Feste's only wish was to gain an easy life and, relatively soon, he did exactly that. The answer he found was to gain the protection of one with power. He toadied up to the troupe leader and when performing, played his part for the nobles. He explained just how small and worthless a person he was, and praised the nobles for being so strong, so wonderful... Their egos salved, these powerful men and women took a liking to Feste and extended him their protection.

As one of the most popular performers, a request came from Duke Edmun of Gransys, asking for talented performers serve him in the castle. Feste wanted this more than anyone else. Feste's ultimate desire was to gain the protection of those with true strength, get close to them, and live a life of comfort and ease. The duke had awesome power, making him the perfect target for this scheme. The troupe leader was afraid of earning Edmun's wrath by sending less than their best performer, so Feste therefore began his days as the castle jester. However, this was still not enough to satisfy Feste. Once he learned of the factions within Edmun's government that did not entirely agree with the duke's rule, Feste quickly sidled up to the anti-Edmun elements and began to work informing those nobles of Edmun's movements. When he heard of the increased activity of the organization Salvation, he next made contact with them and became their spy inside of Edmun's territory. This indeed seems a rather lot of effort, more than was needed to survive, but it is all for Feste's dream of an easy life. Thus he plies his wiles on all with power and uses them to his advantage, never once trusting another soul. Making use of everyone he can, and looking down on them all as he does, the jester Feste is a natural born trickster if ever there was one.

Feste terrifies me. the lying motionless on the ground eyes wide open thing made me turn of the game.

Does the dragon battle always occur at the same time of day for everyone?

That'd mean Dragon's Dogma kind of goes in a circle with its major events. The tutorial is at night; time passes, and the game begins at dawn for your Arisen. You plan most of your journeys to take place during the day. The dragon fight is around sunset. When postgame starts, even daytime is close to night. And then the postgame Seneschal business is nearly complete darkness, taking place of the tutorial which would've been dark as well.

how do i make it lower? i gave her a flower and she blushes now

how do i make it lower? i gave her a flower and she blushes now
The important thing is she shouldn't show up when you meet the dragon for the first time. You can attack people to lower affinity but guards will catch. You can also unsheathe weapon in front of them which startles them and lowers affinity.

As much as I disliked Xenoblade, Dragon's Dogma could've really used an affinity chart. It's way too confusing to keep track.

Do we know how the Arisen's Bond works yet? I'm still confused what happens when two NPCs reach max affinity. Do they have individual affinity capacities (one NPC can love you more)? Does the most recently maxed NPC become your new romance or is it first come, first serve?
