Dragon's Quest & Final Fantasy for PS3 and Xbox 360?

Ehh, this SO reminds me of when MS was "rumored" to buy out Square several years ago :lol

They were going to until Square tried to price themselves at 2 billion when they were worth 500 million.

This is the beginning of the End for Sony if this is true. I can't believe Microsoft is going to end up the king of the videogame market just because they can through away billions of dollars just to screw over the competition.

Does Sony still own a percentage of SE stock? I remember them buying a bunch years ago. I wonder if they could twist an arm or two if it came down to it.

its only 8% other shareholders have preferred shares of 50% or more, they will make the decisions.

Found the name
Masashi Miyamoto, 40%. Total voting right is 369,995 :O

I think the art assets and content for FF & DQ are the biggest cost of those games. The graphics, while pretty, aren't technically speaking cutting edge. So I don't necessary see much watering down if they go multi-platform.

agreed.

Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy have NEVER been cutting-edge technically in graphics or anything. not even close.

Guy LeDouche said:
haha, yeah. they can't do much with 8%
Also note, a key part of the investment deal was that the stock Sony bought was non-voting stock. Sony have no say in what choices Square Enix do, except in terms of them being able ot lobby them.

Exciting isnt it? :D

It all depends on how well the 360 does in Japan this year. If even the GC starts outselling it weekly in 2006, then I have a feeling SE will stray toward the more guaranteed Revolution instead.

Why would this be exciting?

C'mon, this is PRINE you're talking about.

It's not different than a Yankees fan hoping Steinbrenner buys all the best players he can to destroy competition. But, it is disgusting to see someone feel this way about the vg market.

^^^ e: you took my analogy.

Forgotten Ancient said:
Not really.
yeah. I mean, I'll admit I'm a sony fan, so I might be biased, but it's like watching the Yankees win the Series compared to a team with half the payroll winning the Series. The question is always "Why didn't the Yankees win?" rather than the opposite.

vvv e2: cue "SE isn't that important anyway/overrated/past their prime" responses from xbots

I don't know much about Prine so...

I don't know much about him, either...other than the fact that he's one of the most insufferable fanboys I've seen on here. No matter what the implications, so long as MS gets the upperhand he'll be more than satisfied.

I just want X360 to do well in Japan. Theres nothing wrong with that is there?

No different from Sony and Nintendo fans cheering for their console of choice.

Crap. I did not want to see this news upon browsing forums today. Enix is the worst thing that ever happened to Square. Seriously. Sony should have been able to snatch up Square when they had the chance, but they couldn't. I don't like this news at all. MS can have Dragon Quest for all I care, but it's single-player FF that I want to stay an exclusive. Before anyone calls me a Sony fanboy, that's not the case so much as it is FF13 being on both 360 and PS3 is bad news for the GAME. They won't be able to tap into the potential of the PS3's hardware, they'll have to develop it for the weakest hardware graphics-wise (360), and put the same damn thing on the PS3. That might make you want to think that's a good thing because you hate console loyalty. But think about the game. I want the next FF to be as graphically impressive as possible, but it being multiplatform is going to kill that possibility. PS3 has the superior hardware. In Microsoft's defense, it would have been nice to play Final Fantasy X on the XBox, with higher res textures and much needed mipmapping and FSAA that the PS2 simply does not have enough memory and processing power to do for a game like that. But hardware-wise, the tables have turned for the next gen; 360 has weaker hardware. The Square I used to know would have loved to take advantage of that opportunity, but now it seems apparent to me that they're desperate to be anyone's gal. :\

Hopefully Sony won't be stupid and will provide Square-Enix with the biggest "money hat" of them all to keep them on their side. But the fact that Square-Enix came out and said this so early tells me they are really trying to say "we don't want your exclusive company anymore, Sony. Bug off." And whatever Sony may try to offer to Square-Enix for an exclusive Final Fantasy or two, I'm sure Microsoft would be willing to match and exceed. This could end up being a BATTLE for Square, really... but at the end of the day I think the worst case scenario is that Square-Enix games will be on PS3 and XBox 360. Best case scenario (if you care about the game, not console loyalty) is that Final Fantasy stays on the PS3.

At this rate Sony will have awesome PlayStation 3 hardware that barely any developers outside of SCE will take advantage of because they're all putting out the same thing for XBox 360 as well. Sony gamers know this too. Even if FF is not exclusive to 360, but simply there in addition to the PS3, this potential move could be as offensive as Square's complete betrayal of Nintendo prior to FF7.

Sony really can't afford to lose Square, guys... I'm not sure why people can't understand this. Square (specifically, Final Fantasy) is part of the backbone of the Sony PlayStation. If they lose it -- and that includes Square-Enix simply branching out to the XBox 360 beyond their MMORPG's -- it's a huge, huge blow to Sony. Because then you can't just say "well, gamers won't care because they like Sony by default." Yes, as things stand now, they do, and will for a couple years to come. You have to think beyond the gamers, though. DEVELOPERS are now a huge factor in all of this. Regardless of if you notice it or not, I think a lot of Square's actions in the past and even now really do have a huge influence on the market and gives other developers a good idea of what they should and should not be confident in doing, and where to go. Had Final Fantasy VII not come out for the PSX, I really don't know where Sony would be today. Possibly nowhere. Square really did usher in a fanbase that sparked other fanbases and a general interest in the PSX. It was like a chain reaction and their presence in Sony's consoles helps keep that established.

I doubt the console's architectures are similar, so porting it over to the PS3 from 360 (or even 360 to PS3 for some games perhaps) will be a formidable task, one likely with many delays, and mixed results.

From Square's point of view, I think this is foolish. Especially for a Final Fantasy. You know Square's side of the company will want to take advantage of the storage capacity of Blu-Ray. If it's to be on the 360 as well, however... this tells me that it'll be intended for an 8.5GB DVD-ROM and not a 25 or 50GB Blu-Ray disc. They're not going to put out a Blu-Ray version of Final Fantasy for PS3, and make XBox 360 gamers buy a 3 disc DVD version or something; Square's not dumb, they know 360 gamers will see that as being unbalanced.

I just don't like the sound of this... at all. I hope Squeenix does the right thing and keeps single-player FF's on the PS3, where they have more hardware potential to work with and a faster, higher capacity format to put it on... it would be so stupid for them to turn their back on that. They are a company with amazing potential for role-playing games but building their games around the 360 to ensure playability on both consoles is just such a waste from a creative and artistic standpoint...

Nope, there's absolutely nothing wrong with siding with your party of choice. It's pretty hard to be totally unbiased (I'm partial to Nintendo). It's one thing to cheer for your favorite company/dev/system or whatever. It's a wholly different thing when one gets excited over news that *may* lead to the potential crippling, if not demise, of the competitors.

Again, no, it isn't.

Would it be more appropriate to call you a Final Fantasy fanboy? :)

Not that I don't agree with what you're saying...but I want Dragon Quest to stay on one console, as well (preferrably the ps3).

...maybe I'm a DQ fanboy :lol

I *AM* a FF fanboy. They're killing this game's potential if the base of it all is the 360 and then they go from there. It would be so, so foolish to NOT take advantage of the PS3 for the next FF.

Himuro said:
You made that big post for nothing Diablos. ^^;;
So you're either saying I made no sense or that Final Fantasy will remain on the PS3?

Himuro said:
I want them both on Sony dammit!
Then apply the same argument to DQ. :)

Well, I'm not as harsh on the general multiport aspect, but the biggest thing would be that the resources for a full fledge Final Fantasy has to be fractioned towards two machines instead of purely focusing it all on one and concentrate on it all without worry.

Basically...if this news comes true, it's bad news for the three of us. :(

Yeah, you have that as well. You'll have two companies pressuring them to do different things. Sony and MS will both want part of the action while it's in development.

This is not Madden we're talking about. Final Fantasy is just *not* the game to be fucked around with. I don't know what the hell they're thinking. Really, Squeenix is just being retarded.

Oh fuck, you know, I really need to learn to SCROLL UP.

Jesus Christ. I want those minutes of my life back.

Oh, Jesus Christ.
Fuck.

Thanks eXxy.

*bangs head on desk*

The thing is, I read like everything in this thread up until the point where the 1up story was posted.

:lol

>:(

BUT, we still don't know for sure yet! Never know! This very well COULD happen, even if this interview never really did happen or something was reported incorrectly! Square has been being a lot more loyal to other companies ever since Enix slurped them up.

Tellin' ya, Wada is fishin' for money hats. Sony'll give them, though probably in their typical disguised form.

Really though, why care so much? Square Enix has been a steepening of an already steep downhill slide for both original companies if you ask me.

Square Enix = Creatively Bankrupt. :D

Seriously though, they are. Maybe FFXII will change my mind, but the only thing they're good for now is the occasional nostalgic classic like DQ8 or enjoyable action movies like FF7:Advent Children. This from a long time fanboy of both companies. They peaked last generation with solid RPG offerings and strong titles outside of their core genres, now its just crappy spin off after crappy new IP that really has no inovation or polish to it.

O rly? You aren't even interested in FF12?

Thank God!!!

MS can get some FF spinoff for all I care but mainline FF should stay on PS3, the plataform FF is meant to be played.

am i having deja vu here or is this the second time that Wada has publically said this?

Makes sense to go multiplatform with both franchises if possible, so not sure what the fuss is about?

First page. But yes, this is the second time Wada suggested FFXIII and DQIX might go to other platforms besides just PS3. This is the first time, however, that 360 was specifically mentioned as the platform it might go to.

Beautiful. I hope this info is true.

FF goes to 360 then I won't need to buy a PS3 to play the game. Spread the multiplatform love! :D

well, increased costs next gen should see lots of non-1st party companies going totally multiplatform i'd have thought, so i'd expect the Revolution to be in the mix too despite it not being mentioned.

Yeah. Although, just to be clear because you don't seem to have read this thread totally, 1up has just reported that this information is inaccurate. They're "investigating" or whatever it is they do, or waiting for a reply back from SquareEnix for clarification, but all exXy got is that it's inaccurate.

Which makes it seem like what some have been saying in this thread, Square's wanting more money to keep it exclusive and is trying to get Sony to put it up by giving the idea of it going multiplatform.
