DriveClub game director left Evolution Studios in February

It should run better instead. 30 fps for a game is just meh, especially racing.

I don't get the appeal of this game so far. It's not a sim, but it's not true arcade game either? So a little bit of both which ends up in something fans of either genres wont like?
I expect the game to hit the PGR / forza horizon middle ground

my personal thoughts are that there is nothing really wrong with the game or development, but hopefully all these negative articles/assumptions will force sony's hand to actually be more open about the game and the delay. more silence would just help propagate the idea that development and/or the game itself are in trouble.

Something has to be going on here...

If you want my guess, and it would just be a guess, this is what I'd say:

October/November: Sony decides to delay the game because there isn't enough content in the package. Targets late winter or spring release.

December/January: PS4 sells well, but Sony realizing Uncharted won't make 2014 and that year is mostly empty, particularly in the back half. The Order "delayed" to be big fall/winter title. Now has to fill summer/fall gap.

February/March: DriveClub content creation is wrapping up. Maybe incremental polishing going on, but game is essentially done. Sony holding until late summer or fall.

Director leaves because he's got a history of working at studios for 2-3 years and his project is basically done.

That's basically it. Kinda boring but...that's my guess.

Yup that is a racing game. What else am I looking at? i do not see anything special at all. We were playing racing games in first person view for years.
What did you expect from a title called DriveClub? Open world RPG? A clone of Minecraft? As a racer it looks stunning and I sure hope that it's just a good racer without too much simulation (which generally isn't fun) and boring open world crap (which is becoming tiresome to find in every new title out there). How many arcade racers PS4 has? How many exclusive racers? What are you even talking about?

Yup that is a shooting game. What else am I looking at? i do not see anything special at all. We were playing shooting games in third person for years.

Yup that is a strategy game. What else am I looking at? i do not see anything special at all. We were playing strategy games from a bird's eye view angle for years.

All of that sounds pretty reasonable, though the "back to the drawing board" comment doesn't fit quite in there.

The game is supposed to be built from the ground up as a highly sociable game, yet we've seen nothing of those social features that were supposed to cater to PS+ online players.

I hope they have a blowout at E3.

I think that's a really odd thing for Rohde to have said, and from what I can tell no one actually followed up.

So boring! Need more scandals!

This all seems pretty agreeable. I'm also willing to bet Sony wanted them to hit 60 FPS and they were probably having difficulties reaching that target in the small time frame they had left. Forza being 60 probably also spurred them on to achieve that target.

If the game was in a state that they'd be confident about, don't you think he'd word it in a more positive way?

Everything is positive with Bundy.

I feel the same way about Mario Kart 10 but this forum can't contain their excitement for it.

Driveclub sounded awesome for those of us that want a team-based online arcade racer. Especially in this day and age when every arcade racer seems to have a garbage online component.

No one cares about Forza though.

Nah, Driveclub always looked like shit, i was never interested. I will have to keep waiting.
Yeah the gameplay has always looked terribly underwhelming, and even moreso when we got our first look at some of the collisions. Doesn't help that the big differentiating factor about the game is also isn't exciting at all from what it takes influence from. Would have really loved another Motorstorm instead of this.

Those Facebook vids had me hyped. :(

I'm still holding out hope for a E3 re-reveal at 60fps for a fall release.

BELIEVE!

Yeah I think we're looking at a year delay if I had to guess. No way is it cancelled.

Sums up everything very well, but from some people out there that's not a very sexy answer they need more drama.

Sony am doomed.

God knows what is going on at SCEWWS. It's a disaster all around.

First Stig's game is cancelled and people are laid off.
Then Amy Hennig leaves ND
Then Sony London, Guerilla Cambridge and Evo face lay offs
And now Driveclub director leaves Evo?

And what the hell is up with Driveclub?

I don't understand post like this, What are you looking for ? Some kind of reinvention of racing games with no cars or something ?

I mean it's a racing game, what were you expecting it needs for it to become special for you ?

Don't be afraid of changing the rules of physics, don't base your game on reality. I recently discovered Kirby's Air Ride and holy shit am I sad it failed to gain a fanbase. The idea of having no acceleration button alone is so counter intuitive that it takes a genius mind to even conceive the idea. Now this is immediately interesting, it's so strange, weird and most importantly unpredictable that you have my attention.

Try describing the combat system implemented in Transistor to someone, an upcoming high profile indie title. What are the chances people will get what you're saying without seeing any footage, or even if you show them a few clips? Now you can't say the same about Drive Club. "It's a typical racing game" would suffice. "Ah, I see" is the most common response because everyone knows what racing is intuitively.

Hmm? His departure has nothing to do with the layoffs?

I kinda feel that this gives weight to Y2kev's theory, unless he left because he couldn't fix the game and ran away before Sony fired him.

Has Drive Club ever been previewed? If the game is nearly finished, surely Sony would do the final marketing/PR push.

Just like with Stig, you're looking at a game obviously suffering from development issues...not shocking...

Still not worried about any kind of bigger issues at Sony at all

So it's melodramatic to say Evo will close? They're done.

Sorry meant "acclaim", was on phone and it was autocorrect. Also I don't consider Jack Tretton, Amy Henig, or Stig "fat". GOW III and Uncharted say otherwise.

I wouldn't say there was any fat cut there since they left themselves and were not cut. Hennig is a huge loss and a real shame. Stig has been working on a game for 4 years that apparently was never any good. So Sony killed the project and he left. Tretton had been with Sony forever and decided to leave.

There's too much kvetching.

Stig's game sucked. More studios face layoffs in industry absolutely rocked by layoffs over last 5 years. Driveclub director left a month ago.

Sorry, this isn't confusing.

Sony's going to be coasting this gen when it comes to software. They had too many high profile bombs last gen IMO.

Are y'all mennonites or something

3 major directors leave in a very small time frame, and somehow us being concerned is an overreaction... on top of this 1 game has been confirmed cancelled, and another in Driveclub is completely MIA and has been for months. Doesn't help me have a lot of faith on whatever the hell is going on at Sony right now.

That true. but then shouldn't Shu Yoshida be the first to go?

He clearly have no vision and putting the wrong studio on the wrong game on the wrong platform (think Cambridge, Killzone and Vita) he is the one greenlit most of these big bombs for Sony last gen.

I don't really care if you're concerned or not; certainly there was "concern" when Matsuno left acrimoniously from Square-Enix, when Clint Hocking left Ubisoft, when Patrice Desilets left Ubisoft, then rejoined Ubisoft, and then left again, when Ueda left Team Ico, when Joe Staten left Bungie, when Kamiya left Clover and Capcom, when Alex Ward left Criterion, when Drew Karpyshyn left Bioware, when Mikami left like six companies in a row, when all of Team Silent evaporated, when Akira Yamaoka left Konami, when Okamoto left the games industry, when Itagaki left Tecmo, when Todd Papy left SSM (and you didn't even remember because no one gave a shit), when Kim Swift left Valve, and on and on and on and on.

Do you see where I am going or do I need to spell this out for you

These are just the names of people we care to even pretend to know; forget the countless names and faces that toil away in small studios and western studios that do not have strong creative identities that we latch onto and lavish praise on. Anyone have any idea what the churn through EA Sports looks like?

1. Tretton was an exec who can make it to CEO. Why wouldn't he leave if he got a good offer?

2. Henning - who knows what went down.

3. Stig was fat. 4 years without them even being able to release a teaser video.

3. Stig was fat. 4 years without them even being able to release a teaser video.
As if it was Stig's call whether or not to publish a teaser video to the public.

The game was canceled for reasons unknown and the usual assumption is that publishers don't cancel projects that are on track and are very promising just to spite enthusiasts that adore high-profile individuals. But that reasoning above is dumb.

They also got 2 even better game directors to replace the 2 game directors that left:

Neil Druckmann and Cory Barlog.

God of War Ascension was never any good and that didn't stop them from releasing it, I wouldn't judge a game we know almost nothing about. The only fact we know is that a significant number of very talented and experienced people that shipped multiple 90+ games were laid off from SSM.

I also strongly disagree with your optimism about Driveclub's current state. The game was panned at E3, people didn't like how it played, it looked worse than Forza 5 despite running at half the frame rate, it was just very disappointing. To think they went from that, to not good enough to ship in November, to completely finished in February is just too much of a stretch.

Odd how all this is happening when Sony has the upper hand.

Things got pretty bleak at times last gen, and most of these same people and studios carried the brand -- and on a much tougher system to develop for.
God of War Ascension was never any good
