DS Web Browser on the way?

Here's the WorkBoy. Wasn't made by Nintendo, but the only place I saw it was in NP magazine. If they could just release a cart that did all this for NDS (updated visuals/content of course) with some PDA functionality...I think this would be killer for the system.

I don't think NDS would work as a web browser or AIM/Yahoo/MSN messenger device. However, these are all things that are/should be possible with Nintendo hardware/WFC in the near future:
-online PictoChat (basically acting as a "lobby" to talk about games or set-up matches...something current WFC games lack)
-Nintendo.com browser (Nintendo would create "webpages" that could be veiwed on you NDS/Revolution) to gain access to: MyNintendo, news, WFC info/stats, Previews/Reviews, etc.
-Nintendo media center where users could download game-specific JPG's, MPG's & MP3's (screenshots, interviews, trailers, soundtracks, etc.) onto SD Cards (thus making the data interchangable between PC's, GBA's, Revolution's & NDS's)
-Game Demo/Virtual Console outlet

If there was a WorkBoy/Play-Yan/WFC Pictochat/Nintendo.com browser cartridge for the NDS...it would be nutty!

An e-mail client and IM software would be a better idea.

Maybe, but I'm more talking about what Nintendo should do on their own since they really can't control other companies IM & E-Mail services. If another company (say AOL) wants to bring AIM to NDS, fine, but I would rather Nintendo not get involved with something like that.

The PSP's low resolution makes browsing tedious, plus the fact that it says "out of memory" far too often when browsing. I really don't seen how it would be possible on the DS with it's even lower resolution and far less ram.
knowing you, the sites you visit are a little too bandwidth-heavy anyway.

i guess it's a nice idea. although i don;t know how much i would use it. so far i've only played online with the DS in my house. i don't even know where all the hotspots are..

I can't believe nobody bit on my WorkBoy find or my ideas...

As I said in my post, I've long thought the DS should have stuff like that. Even giving it some basic PDA functions would be nice. I'm not sure if it could work, but if they released such a thing for the DS, I'd love to see it use the GBA slot instead. That way, you can have all that stuff in the DS without sacrificing the game slot.

And while we're at it, make a DS Rakubiki Jiten 2, give it full on kanji support, and bring it to the US with English speakers in mind. Using my DS instead of needing to buy an expensive pocket electronic dictionary would be nice.

What's wrong with Raku right now? No kanji?!

It has no kanji lookup support, no. You can't look for words via their kanji, and you can't get detailed information on what each kanji character is. It is a dictionary program for Japanese people, not people wanting to work with Japanese, and that fact is very evident.

For us English speakers, it makes a decent conversational dictionary. If you're going English to Japanese, you can find the word in English, then hand the DS off to the person you're talking to. If you're going Japanese to English, you need to know how to pronounce the word, not how to write it in kanji, which would obviously be of more use when talking to people. So, it's a decent program to use if you're sitting around chatting with Japanese people, and you need something to help for those times when one side or the other doesn't know a word.

The problem is, the interface is really nice, so those elements keeping it from being a good tool for us English speakers is even more pronounced. A decent amount of work would have to be put into the program to make it really useful for English speakers, but it could be done, and would end up as a nice result.

It baffles me to this day that there is NO pocket electronic Japanese dictionary out there for English speakers, at least that I know of.

Not that it'll happen, but if Nintendo created expandable memory via the GBA port, would that be able to speed things up? I guess having a memory stick doesn't speed up the PSP's browsing, though.
