DSi North American Launch Date: April 5th, 2009

Oh right, I just remember someone showing a pic of the DSi next to a lite and it was something like 1-2 cm wider, but ever so slightly thinner.

So... we know that they increased the specs of the DSi by some degree, we just don't know to what extent?

If this was something like the GBC compared to the GB wouldn't they try to time a new release (other than DL stuff) that shows the improved innards versus the DSL? I would imagine that would help improve sales right? As it is now many people just see it as the micro to the GBA but with some extra baggage.

That to me says it's not quite as beefy as people are speculating, BUT they could be doing some sort of weird "soft" launch of a system in which they slowly but surely phase out the DSL in favor of the DSi. Sort of like how they phased out the GBA for the DS except... much more ninja-like.

Or maybe Nintendo just isn't interested in marketing its systems on the basis of beefier specs, but would rather market them for the fun-value.

Sure, that is normally the big N's general strategy. This is in fact probably what they are doing, however that doesn't change the fact that they did modify the DS to some extent.

Not only that but if they really are trying to emphasize the fun factor then why not actually come out with some retail game software to show it off? Most Wii/DS owners I bump into either don't have wifi access in their homes or straight up don't care. So having most of the good stuff come out through that particular outlet with a bevvy of bite sized apps to show it off is still odd.

Wouldn't it be easier to market a systems fun-value based on the games it can play? Which in this case isn't anything designed to take advantage of the new hardware features, not just the beefier ram and whatnot, I mean the cameras and SD slot. Coming out with a new piece of hardware and then just saying "Just wait we'll get around and really start throwing our weight behind it soon" is pretty weird.

Just sayin' either way you look at it it's kind of weird what Nintendo is doing. That being said I'm still contemplating between the blue or the black or whether I can afford it when it comes out:lol

Pre-ordered a Blue one tonight at Gamestop. The DS has really been my "go to" system lately, especially with the relative lack of RPG's on the other systems. And with Suikoden and Atlus's recent and upcoming offerings for the DS my playtime on the system is only going to go up. Heck, I would have been there with bells on for just the larger screen and improved sound so all the other upgraded features are just icing on the cake. April 5th cannot come soon enough!

I heard very soon, but wasn't told that. Will Monday be the last day or will Sunday be the last day?

Fuck me. Just folded and pre-ordered the black dsi on amazon. My main gripe is that the gray power button looks kind of shitty on it, but I guess it will stay a lot cleaner (looking) than the white.

Damn...going to have to knock out this trade in tomorrow then... Unless they mean Monday is the last day for preorders.

Wait... folks are dumping DS Lites for $75?

I'm starting to think I should try to buy one for that price.

So someone comes up to me today and goes, "Vook don't you miss not being able to play Gameboy Games?" and I am like well....

I dont think they want to kill the DS sales instantly now like it happend with the GBA. There are so many DSL in stores they all need to get sold through.
I think they replace the DSL with the DSi when all DSL are sold anyway.
That way they get a shit load of extra money from those old DSL and do not piss customers.
The DSi instead is for customers who own a DSL already for at least one year and want to try something new. I think sometime next year they'll start showing some awesome DSi only games with Motion sensing and such (based on the camera) or some kind of augmented reality.
Even DSi only games at this point woult piss DSL owners who bought it only weeks ago

I am of the school where I will probably just keep my DSL and also purchase the DSi.

If you have games from your prior systems, I don't see any reason to get rid of it just because the DSi is the "new" system. And I have a ton of GBA games I don't want to close access off of.

I would have prefer they just kept it thicker to allow for the GBA port, then I could have gotten rid of my DSL.

Isn't the DS Lite at the bottom? Black?

I really don't need the DSi but I know I'm going to end up buying one anyway. Maybe I'll give my sister my DS Lite or something.

That image I quoted that was mimicked in this thread has gotten a little creepy since they changed it, with this pleased-looking Iwata peering out from the curved ground... :lol

Don't we already know it's 2x the processor speed, 4x the RAM, and the new WiFi hardware?

I think it says "What, me worry?"

So do we know of any DSi retail games that are actually in the making?

Cos reading the other thread it's gotta be suicidal to make retail games for the DSi where it was pointed out in the other thread that DSi cartridge games won't work at all for the older Ds'es.

There's nothing suicidal about it. DS Lites still exist. 98 Million of them. The complete userbase can be addressed with a new DS Lite game by any developer willing to try. It's not like all 98 million users buy every game.

However, if you want to make a game for a new, core-base of fans looking to buy games which take advantage of their new, more expensive system, there is going to be a good market for that, too. DSi owners are more likely to buy new games for the first year, I reckon.

So everyone wins. DS Lite already has a library which makes picking one up new a brilliant, brilliant choice if you've never played them. You don't have to only buy games coming out in the next five years - there's four years worth of great titles already.

Yes, but we don't know if there's more. The RAM should not only be bigger, but also quite a bit faster for example. The DSi seems to use DDR FCRAM - I believe the regular DS used a different type of RAM.

I'd say that's a fair point if we were going by past precedence i.e. enticing the "hardcore" gamers first with promises of new and fantastic DSi exclusive games (like the Mario's, Zelda's and Metroid's) but everything about the DS has been anything but past precedence with its new outside-in philosophy :/ .

So right now I'm in a boat with 2 options:

(1) Do I part exchange my DSL and pay a premium of ~ £70 for the privilege to play my existing DS games and mini DSiware software (which I don't really care about so far); or

(2) Am I paying a premium of only £20 to get a new console by trading in my old DSL (worth £75 and paying another £75 on top) for the ability to play next gen DS games?

I want to take a wait and see approach but I'm not sure how fast the value of my DSL will depreciate :/ .

Is Gamestop the only place taking pre-orders? I'm dieing to buy a DS right now and was going to go out and buy one(income tax) but the DSi is less than 2 months away D: I dont know if I could hold out that long.

Well, I sold my Lite for $80 so I'm game system-less until April. That means I'll just work on my golf game (or lack thereof) in the meantime ;)

Preordered the black DSi and Rhythm Heaven from Amazon.

It seems all you're missing from that collection is some kind of Game & Watch and a Game Boy Pocket. Not bad.

I was at my local store today and they were telling me how in 3 days they've done over 50 preorders with £20 deposit a pop.

They're also selling the system for half price when you trade in a DS Lite.

This is gonna be huge in the UK, it seems.

I got a DS phat the DS that came bundled with with metriod Hunters demo, I kind of wish Nintendo included the double slot feature or creates a Wii "Pokemon" channel so I can do trade between Pearl and Plantnium. As it stands my DS phat is in good shape but it is so damn heavy and the battery charge is 3 hours. I held of buying a DS lite I seen how the bighter screen make you game seem new, DSI is a buy I think:D

Can't play Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble, so no!
Well, you kinda can, you just have to reverse the directions you tilt. I think my brother was actually able to beat the first level on his SP by doing this.

Got a Game and Watch and a Pocket somewhere... just no idea where.

Oh and it is a silver DS Lite at the back, a Crimson/Black Lite on the left, and a Black DSi at the front just to confirm. Also the "middle" GBA SP is a GBA SP+ the other two are normal. The GBA SP+ wasn't released here. D:

Actually I think it is soon as they open the store on Monday...atleast thats what my manager said.:lol

And you dont have to do trades immediately, just do it when the DSi comes out and you should still get the bonus.

Abit off topic but does anyone have a mp3 of the DSi Shop Channel music? I would like to use it in some of my future videos.

Just wondering.

42 more days! :D

Edit: Hey just realized the we should get a free 1000 DSiPoints in America since we don't have any Nintendo Points cards available yet. I thiink thats the reason that Japan got free points.

Not quite. I think the 1000 free points thing was a region-specific promotion, and Wii Points Cards were rebranded into Nintendo Points cards.

Back from preordering. Apparently they just have a certain amount of preorders they can take, and everyone has received alot already. Not really a specific cut off date, just allotment amount.

And yeah, now I see its just a generic trade in deal, not for DSi in particular.
