DSi North American Launch Date: April 5th, 2009

Woooo! This will be the fifth DS that I've owned.

Nintendo treats me like a mackerel. They give me an inch and then reel me in. Give me an inch, then reel me in.

I actually owned a Turquoise Phat back in the day. Guys, don't underestimated the contrast between the black highlights and the blue body...very pleasing. The new DSi is similar.

I also own that one, the difference being that the hinges of the top screen are all cracked, the top screen doesn't "lock" anymore and there's a really ugly scratch in the touchscreen due to trying to get a boost in Diddy Kong Racing DS.

It's a pretty sexy machine, all things said. I think I'll buy the blue one for my sister (as the Phat was originally hers and I need to replace it) and the black one for myself.

Rhythm Heaven announced alongside DSi for the USA. Looks like Nintendo really wants Rhythm Heaven to take off in the USA, and for that I approve.

they also said in some their dumb IR q&a that rhythm heaven and girls mode fashion were major ds priorities for america/europe so yeah it'd say they're really going to push it

Grr, must be the unexpected $10 drop from the rumored price but I'm getting this now. Was going to wait a few months, but by selling both of my DS Lites I shouldn't be too far in the red.

I really hope DSiWare steps da fock op.

PS- Black FTW; if there was a hotrod red available I would've gotten that, but I don't know if that could've worked with the matte... Regardless I've been in love with the black model since October. <3

I know you could answer "NoA", but this is no surprise really, given how well the game sold in Japan. I wonder how Nintendo will tweak the game for the USA, Europe and Australia. Will they change some tunes? Some games? Some graphics?

Either way, Rhythm Tengoku was so good :D :D :D. I hope it'll take off outside of Japan.

@Stump: why do you say "their dumb q&a IR"?

Wow, I still have my launch DS lite. Near had an issue with it, never dropped it, never left my car door open to allow it to get stolen! :lol

so......... how is this superior to the DS lite? Besides a camera I mean.. because I could give a rat's ass about a camera.

Internal storage, external storage (SDHC = 32GB possible), downloadable games, more RAM for games, larger screens (25% I think), and much better speakers.

I posted this in the other thread, but signs point to it being an under-the-hood hardware upgrade. Of course it's not confirmed, etc. but I'm confident.

Then again, right now, it doesn't mean much, unless you're into DSiWare. Which I think I will be.

copied over for discussion continuity:

I originally thought that they would have had to put DSiWare (before we knew it was DSiWare) on a DS-compatible card so that they wouldn't be effectively throwing away installed DS base. I hoped so, too, so that I wouldn't have to buy a new handheld either. ;)

Thing is, though, DSi appears to be a new platform. Kind of on par with how Wii is a new platform vs. GameCube. It's got very different innards, but it's similar enough to run existing DS games in a compatibility mode (as I understand it, the new generation of "DSi-compatible" homebrew/pirate cards can only run DS games in compatibility mode, for example. Homebrew running on them has no access to DSi features.) Just to cut-and-paste from my own article there, I've done some digging and I'm pretty confident that DSi has (over DS)
  • the CPU running at a higher speed (2x)
  • 16 MB of RAM (vs. 4 MB)
  • the cameras
  • 256 MB of internal storage
  • the SD slot
  • improved sound capabilities in both input (mic) and output (new sound chip, as I understand it)
  • a secondary Wi-Fi chip that can do WPA and performs much better
Unlike with Wii, though, Nintendo isn't calling DSi a new platform; they're positioning it as an iteration of DS. Perhaps they're doing this to give it a nice, long, rolling start... making sure they don't make DS obsolete out of the gate.

DSi does seem to be DS2... it's just hard to tell from the outside.

yes, you are correct, i went on and researched about the DSi hw last night.

everything is fine and dandy, but my problem with the 'upgrade' sits right there:

while i can easilly resist any color, lcd display (unless OLED : ) and size update in a line of handhelds, i could hardly resist a 'brand new specs' update, and even less so a 'no online service' -> 'online service' upgrade - as i am more than sure that there will be a must-get app on it sooner or later for me. basically, from my perspective, nintendo is playing dirty on us here. sort of like ms did last gen with the xbox, although in the latter case ms abruptly cut the lifespan of their older console and moved on, while nintendo may keep producing dsl along with dsi forever, for all we know.

.. on the other hand, i do like the whole continuity in the hardware line approach nintendo demonstrate with both the wii and the dsi - both systems keep a one-deep full backward compatibility queue, and provide (the DSi surely will, no question here) emulation of older systems. that brings to superb software libraries for either systems - something which i, as a consumer, cannot neglect. i guess that my choice this time will be to delay getting a dsi as much as i could, i just pray they don't come up with a soul-bubbles/ds-10 -class titles anythime soon : )

I don't know much about the differences in their innards, but from a disruptive strategy point of view, it is VERY possible, even likely, that this is, indeed, the next Nintendo handheld, and not just a premium of the DS Lite. That would square with their strategy. It is a new way of approaching the "generation shift." We'll see how it goes, though, they're probably testing the waters.

Is there a killer app (does anyone say "killer app" anymore?) for DSWare yet? I haven't followed it at all since the Japanese launch.

And will WPA work with older DS online games, or just new stuff?

I'm interested, but I could just as easily see myself picking up a cheap Lite after this launches.

Hmm, I don't know...I mean if they announce tons of games only for DSi then yes its a new platform.

We really need to make an official DS Vs DSi specs post. Asuming that the New ARM9 cpu has more speed (133 to 200 Mhz or so ive read), does it means that the Dsi can handle more triangles per/sec??? or the inside GPU is still the same. Im confused as hell!!!! :lol

in for 1 black DSi. I'll make my nephew really happy by giving him my lite for his birthday. If only I had that kind of video game technology when I was nine.

Expected it to cost 10$ more, going by the Japanese pricepoint. Hope it won't cost more than 170€ in Europe then :D.

So with taxes and all up here in Canada,it should be close to 250 bucks....i'll stick with my DS LITE and PSP for now thank you very much ;P
I thought you were exaggerating until I did the math. :(

169.99 USD = 214.451 CAD (most likely bumped up to $220 CAD)
add 13% tax = $248.60 CAD

Does the DS even have a GPU?

That said the higher clock speed and four times the RAM definitely mean more can be done, although that's also in contrast to the fact that as of right now DSi-only software has to be downloaded, limiting the size.

That said I'm all for Super Mario Galaxy DS being a DSi retail game launch title! :D

Come on guys...we know that there will be a Zelda DSi announcment soon... ;-)

Why do people talk about selling their DS/DSLites? How much will you get from it? How much more fun will you have playing single-cart multiplayer with family/friends/strangers?

There's plenty of great single-cart multiplayer games even if some have just a demo. I personally like Daigasso! Band Brothers and Mario Kart. Big Brain Academy and Brain Age stuff is always fun for some quick games. Everyone wants to join in on the math! :)

So you think there will be no great games in future for your DS Lite ?

yeah, it's very likely that publisher will abadon the +100 mil userbase :lol

Shit if he just got a DSLite last year then its clear he wasnt concerned with being on the bleeding edge of the DS scene arriving years late and all.

Dont worry about your DSlite. If you just bought it there is no way in sam hell that you are even halfway through the "awsome game" backlog. Go play some games, when you catch up to the rest of us then buy a DSi IMO.

isn't the dollar at 80 cents now. It should be around 205 then. I hope its no more then 200 here

Anyone think we will see a price drop in DS's to clear stock? or will Nintendo be selling both for ever?

DSL sold like 500K last month in the us alone - there won`t be a price drop. in fact the dsi will start just as another option, it is way to soon for the dsi too replace the ds lite completly...

preordering the black one at my store tomorrow.....honestly my ds collects dust but now i`ll have more use for a portable gaming system so i think it`ll be a worthwhile purchase, if not then i`ll just cancel the pre-order

really, i wonder which kind of big flagship title they will shor the dsi, nintendo wouldn`t just release a hardware upgrade like that if they didn`t had something bigger in their mind. i guess there will be at least one casual game ( ndogs dsi ?) and a core game ( zelda) for DSi as flagship title.

They said in the press release Rythm Heaven is being targeted as "the" DSi launch title (it does make some use of the cameras if I remember?) Pokemon Platinum, like New Super Mario Bros. for the DS Lite, is coming out a little bit beforehand and should also boost sales a bit.

Anyone seen the internet browsing on this thing yet? I understand that it wont be great but is it decent enough to look forward to?

Yeah, they'll market it that way to push it more. But i'm talking about real dsi games, which will only play on dsi.

Let's see if people are still willing to buy anything Nintendo regardless of price. This will be a testament to the bad economy, high pricing and already two former models in existence. I'd like to see whether parents are going to buy this for their children for Christmas with the DS Lite out there for much cheaper assuming they don't own one yet.

how would rhythm heaven use the cameras

it predates the dsi by months

I think NoA expect the DSi to be a slow-burner, which is fine since they still have the DS Lite to bring in the money. Actually they didn`t need the DSi this early, sothey'll just cash-in on the early adopters .

People said they were crazy to release the ds when the gba was doing so well.

Having said that, I think they're crazy for releasing the dsi now.
