Dual Shock 4 is not a Move controller, light is for logging you in

I honestly thought the original idea was a gimmick.

But if the light is powerful enough to light up a dark room, that could be really fucking cool.

Like imagine climbing up a volcano, and the wall in front of you lights up orange/red?

Or you are playing Dead Space, the controller is shining a blue (white?) light because there is light in the room, but suddenly the power gets turned off, so the light turns off as well. Could be creepy as fuck.

Wow, thats a good idea.

edit- Maybe it could even be an OS function that devs don't even have to do anything. Maybe the PS4 will examine what the prominent colour is on the screen, and adjust accordingly?

I was also going to say it's gimmicky, but now you mention these things, it sounds like it could add some value. Even in the new Star Wars game, when lasers or light sabre swipes pass you, they could temporarily light up blue, red etc. Certainly could add to immersion if implemented well.

Another almost useless 'innovation' to make us feel less stupid about paying another $150 so that 3 of our friends can join in when we already have a cupboard full of perfectly functional dual shocks / six-axises.

Doubt the new light sensor is going to add much if anything to the cost of the controller lol.

looking forward to this even more now....damn.

I know some might not think it is possible, but I'm hoping they will let us aim with light part of the controller as if it were a Move controller, like in PS3 FPSers.

if I know Sony though, this whole light thing will be optional...it will be "on" by default, but for those that don't want their controller lighting up the room...i'm sure there will be a setting to turn it off.

If all this tech comes without increasing the weight of the controller I'm cool with it. I like the weight of the DS3 and wouldn't mind if the DS4 weighed about the same.

Two questions though:

1) Damn, this thing must be a pretty powerful light source if that's the case. What will it do to battery life? Can I assume that batteries have improved to allow for cheap, yet longer lasting batteries to sustain such lighting?

2) Why not move the light to encompass around the border of the touchpad? Wouldn't that allow this light immersion to happen better, and also act as a source of player info, if needed?

It's amazing what immersion can come from this controller. Two very big immersive ways to get you playing:

1) Plug in jack for headsets to allow for something much more private/immersive (Wonder if Sony will provide a headset accessory for seriously awesome sound mechanics)
2) The glow light would be awesome for visuals (but it'd have to be pretty powerful, no?)

Edit: Hm, actually, I guess the light wouldnt have to be powerful at all, but it'd be great if it had various levels of light.

I really, really like the idea, wondering if this makes the controller significantly more expensive, but I am so down for this

Lighting up a dark room doesn't seem like a great feature because playing in a dark room is already not recommended because it's really bad for eye-strain. In fact Sony already had a licensing agreement with Ambx who makes ambient lighting systems for PS3 middleware. I know of nothing that supports it. Kinda wasted, at least in those situations the backlighting actually is good for preventing eye strain because it provides additional light to your eyes.In the DS4 sense it's not going to have the brightness to do that.

But having a set of Ambx lights for my PC they are nice and I wish more companies bought into that sort of tech but this would not be an appropriate way to do it.

YES. Less features, dammit!
Addressing your poorly thought out sarcasm, this is good news because it means Sony won't be devoting a ton of resources towards something many gamers have no interest in. And it won't be adding to the price of the console. Unlike the next Xbox.

I hope that damn light won't be a pain in the ass reflecting on my screen in dark gaming sections.
I'm fairly close to my TV, and that would be some bullshit, also one of the worries i had with the Move.

too much light for me then ;P

I thought that would have been a really cool option. Although I'm not sure how comfortable it would be for aiming. But still dissaointing, I was hoping for more expansion on the wiimote+nunchuck foundation.

It's hard to believe the controller's light is going to be strong enough to cast light akin to the Philip TV in that video (which looks great, btw). Even if it's theoritcally possible, unless it gets pushed in meaningful way and to good results by a first party game, I wonder how many devs are even going to bother.

If they're still going to have Move I wish they wouldn't have jacked up the cost of the DS4 with this Sixaxis crap that NOBODY has made use of in years, and on top of that they bundle a camera too! WTG

That's not at all what he was saying. It could be an excuse for why you can't just use dual shock 3's that could probably work perfectly fine with the console.

Good to hear, means the DS4 won't be more expensive due to move parts. Thanks for giving us options and not ramming motion controls down our throats. Never have been a fan of motion control games, at least for what are traditional games.

I don't buy it. The lighting in a dimly lit room is going to be a function mainly of what is on the screen, not what some LED light in a controller is putting out.

Also, if the controller light is somehow bright enough to dominate the lighting in the room, it's going to create some pretty bad screen reflections in a dark room.

Unless the light source is behind the tv (eg. like amBX for PC games) then I don't see how this ambient stuff will work well.

You guys should play more Move games to see what this can feel like. inFamous: Festival of Blood was great at 1 AM with a blood red Move light giving my living room a crimson tint.

That is the case for most new consoles pertaining to old peripherals. They don't need to offer a reason, new peripherals is sadly just par for course. The light sensor is not a necessity either, it's only something they're adding to boost the controllers value proposition. In other words, give you more bang for your buck.

I wouldn't say however, that it's purpose was to allow them an excuse to raise the price of the controller, though that may very well happen (likely due to the cost of the other new additions and materials).

That seems to be a good idea.

I remember reading about a similar application of the lighted ball on the Move controller with Need for Speed: Most Wanted for PS3. If you play the game using the Move controller and the steering attachment, and you get involved in a police chase, then the ball would alternately flash blue and red to imitate the lights on a police car.

If they're still going to have Move I wish they wouldn't have jacked up the cost of the DS4 with this Sixaxis crap that NOBODY has made use of in years, and on top of that they bundle a camera too! WTG

There are still some games making use of the Sixaxis tilt controls. Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is one recent release that comes to mind.

I don't believe they should remove tilt from the controller. If anything, the public might be more accepting of tilt controls now than at the PS3's inception, since so many games on smartphones and tablets utilize them. As long as it's used judiciously and not shoehorned into games where it isn't convenient or appropriate, I don't see a problem.

I don't think Sony means that the light bar will glow up on the walls. The light is just there for you to skimpt from underneath the controller, thus being atmospheric to him.

I hope we can adjust the brightness of the light. Part of the reason I never used Move much was because of how distracting it was on the edge of my peripheral vision and how much it reflected in my screen.

Sounds neat, the question will always be if developers are going to take advantage of these extra features.

That's not at all what he was saying. It could be an excuse for why you can't just use dual shock 3's that could probably work perfectly fine with the console.

There's also the share button which seemingly has its own separate interface section, start and select being relegated to just an options button, and the touchpad which developers are apparently going to be using.

I doubt they have added these extras and changed things around just to make you to buy another one if you need more than the one coming with the system.
