All these duck-related threads gave me and idea for this one.

What was your favorite game growing up? My favourite was Heads Up 7-Up. I'd play that today if I had enough people, and I'm 30! That's where a group puts their head down, another smaller group of people touch you, and if the person tagged guesses who tagged them, they switch spots. Simplicity at its finest.

Also, that game on the jungle gym where one person shuts their eyes and has to tag you. I've heard it called so many different things so I can't really give it a title, grounders is what I called it. Great game, except the one time where I went tooth first into a monkey bar.

duck duck goose, aka pick the fat kid cuz you knew he wasnt going to catch you

heads up 7 up was awesome because i just tried to take a nap, but everyone always cheated and looked at peoples shoes.

I miss gym class as a kid, playing dodgeball and kickball :( does that count as childhood games

We used to play Butts Up. It was basically hand ball played with a tennis ball or a blue racket ball. The difference was, if you missed you had to put your hands on the wall like the police were going to search you. Then your opponent gets to throw the ball as hard as he can at your ass.

We also played dead arm where we punch each other in the arm until someone gave up.

Boys are silly.

King of the Mountain
for some reason we called Smere the Queer "Muhammad Ali"
who's the judge
black magic (some game we played in 2nd grade, not sure if this is universal)
night games (RELEASE)

"Build ups in the bush"

Basically our school backed onto a national park, and we'd play tag in this massive area. In Build ups though once you are tagged you are always "it", so eventually everyone becomes that.

Once the teachers banned that though we played handball and soccer :p

This is the GOAT schoolyard game. I played this religiously, aside from basketball and dodgeball.

Kickball.
Manhunt.

I don't remember the name, but there was one person that was it, the rest of the people start off in one spot. The object was to run between "bases"/safe spots(not sure if it was in order or not). Whoever was tagged, had to help the original person.

Kids still play wall ball, similar to "butts up" except no one gets hit with the ball. Little kids are not allowed to play tag and I thought this was a crock of b.s. until I saw one run right into a playground pole, getting a nasty bump on his head. The little ones are so uncoordinated.

(By little kids I mean pre k-kindergarten)

They play that in gym, at my school it's called "cross my ocean".

Red Ass (same thing as butts up, I think, just with a diff name). Man, that shit huuurt, since we didn't aim to hit the wall, but the person.
Four square
Foot Hockey (soccer with a tennis ball) on pavement. It's (or was, I'm not sure if kids still play it) a Canadian tradition
Kickball
Tag
Plain ol' Wrestling on grass

those were the days =(

I imagine they have different names in different countries. British Bulldog and Tracking were my favourite games.

The rules for British Bulldog were quite simple: you had to run from one end of the yard to the other without getting tagged. Obviously the more people that got tagged, the more people you had to avoid. Eventually it comes down to one person having to make it to the other side while everyone else is trying to stop them.

Have to say my favorite childhood game was Hide and Seek. That shit was fun. The thrill of a person coming close to your hiding spot and then not finding you. I miss childhood.

40/40 or fox and the hound were my favorite games we used to play growing up, me and my mates still play the occasional game of 40/40 drunk on the way home from the pub.

As a substitute teacher, I use 7-Up as an end of the day activity if they finish all the work the teacher leaves. Most of the time, it helps make it a sane day. When I subbed in kindergarden, they had gym so I let them play Duck Duck Goose for a while too. It's cool that all these games are still being played these days.

Curious if anyone knows this game. Someone has a ball and there's people all around you. When you throw the ball up in the air, everyone runs but the person throwing the ball calls out one of their names. If the person who's name was called catches it on the fly, the person throwing the ball in the air initially has to do it again. If they don't catch it on the fly and it bounces, they have to get it and scream "stop." Once they do, the person has, I think, five steps to get close to someone and throw the ball at them. If they hit them, the hit person takes the thrower's spot. If they miss, the thrower has to throw the ball up in the air all over again. I don't know the name of it but I used to play it all the time with kids on my block and thought someone here might.

I'd also like to take a moment to spoil the opportunity for someone to say Monster Rain.
Who is that in your avatar?

Played this last year at a friend's BBQ! lol

Also loved pool games like Marco Polo and Sharks and Minnows.

Growing up in the Bahamas, I think we had some different games. Hand games were cool, but I really liked action games. We had Red Light Green Light, Kickball, and Tag, but we also had 'Catch N Freezers' which is like tag but you had to stop in place if someone who was 'it' touched you, and could only be unfrozen if a team mate tagged you, and Burner, which is where one person through a tennis ball towards a crowd of people and if you caught it without dropping it, you'd get to be the person to throw.

Good times.

Duck, duck, goose
Red Rover
Grounders! I totally called it that too
Freeze Tag
King of the Mountain
King's Court /Four Square
Butt's up / Red Butt
Hose (making shots in basketball and subsequent people had to make it or get a letter in spelling Horse)
POGS
Marbles
Slockey (It was hockey with slots - 1 on 1 in with ringette sticks and a pick and this board had slots you had to move the puck through)

This game is how I got my nickname all the way back in gradeschool. Used to make this cooing noise like a bird and I was able to throw my voice. So whenever I was one of the people touching, I would make the coo noise for the person I touched and for everyone else touched. So nobody could figure out if I was actually the one who touched them or not. From that someone started calling me the Koomaster and we called the game Koo's-Up from there.

My other favorite game was red rover just because I liked bursting through people's arms.

Hell ya, we called this "mooney" or "peg" or "wall ball". Mostly mooney.
