Nah, I'm doing just fine. Perhaps you're the one on edge, saying people only with low standards will enjoy DOF and saying the game "sucks donkey balls" based on a 7 minute demo?

You are right. In the full version, everything is much better - Level design sky-rockets, weapon limits are removed, the awful gunplay is ironed out, the graphics are given an overhaul, driving is spruced up, the animations are given a complete rework, the duke atmosphere returns, the Depth of Field will get corrected and sounds given an overhaul :)

They made a really, really bad demo just to mess with us, it's all so obvious.

Ball of Steels edition pre-ordered.

No, people with a lower standard with appreciate. Just because you're a Duke fan, doesn't necessarily mean you want to suck up this abomination that doesn't hold any of the qualities Duke 3D did. Basically only has the name on the box and the cheesy one-liners, everything else just doesn't hold up for its time and the map design / feature-set just seems like a step down. Just because it's Duke Nukem, doesn't mean that's a free-pass card for the game to suck donkey balls, no idea when that idea was allowed to run wild.

Fine, some people enjoy it and take it for what it is but stop this, "Oh you need to be a Duke fan to appreciate it" and pretend the game actually holds up to any kinds of standards. It's a bad game with none of the Duke Nukem spirit.
-Interactivity (playable pool, playable pinball, etc)
-Returning trademark weapons (shrink gun, etc)
-A storyline which doesn't take itself seriously (which is a freaking godsend in the current game industry. I've had enough brodude storylines which believes it's the next big thing in storytelling)
-Boobs

Those are some things which Duke Nukem series is known for which is returning. You're vastly exaggerating if you believe one liners is the only thing returning.

I agree there's some disappointing things (more linear level design and the regenerating health), but if it still feels like a Duke game and it's just plain fun to play, I don't care.

I just watched the Postal III trailer and it looks like everything DNF wishes it could be. Sort of sad, isn't it?
I just watched that trailer because you said this... and I have no idea what you're talking about. I wouldn't want monkeys face raping people or giant dick costumes in a Duke game. DNF may seem juvenile, but at least it's retained its sense of humour. Postal 3 just looks utterly random for the sake of being random.

GAFfer 1: gog.com is great! Games back then were so good, they didn't need fancy graphics and were all about gameplay! They could teach modern gaming a thing or two! Who needs CoD when you can just play a classic?

GAFfer 2: Bah! DNF looks rubbish and OLD! Those graphics are so BAD! Why would I want to play an OLD game? Why can't it be more like CoD?

Uh... ?

YES! Plus 1 million. I was there in 1995, and I'm here now. Playing that locker room level FELT like I was playing Duke3D - it just had that vibe of "foreboding and awesomeness"... I dunno, I can't explain it, but it's DUKE

I knew that we were gonna be in trouble when, in the demo, I stood in front of the bathroom mirror and jumped.

Then I looked at my watch... yep, it was 2011 alright.

Exactly. DNF feels like a Duke Nukem game, that's what was most important to me. Demo was indicative of that, and that's what sold me on it. End of story for me. June 14 can't come soon enough.

Apparently not. I do not have my l33tGAF card yet and instead just prefer to use personal enjoyment as the criteria when I assess if I like a game or not....

I actually disagree with this. The story is stupid, but it takes itself and the Duke character way too seriously, to an almost embarrassing level. From what I've seen, Duke Nukem Forever is like a parody that jumped the shark and forgot it was a parody. It feels so bogged down in attitude and character, and I think that they believe that it was what made D3D good.

I'd have no problem with duke playing like a modern build game.
This is sort of like the step from Blood to Blood 2.

The game starts with Duke playing a remake of Duke3D. In one part of the storyline Duke gets shrunk down to a tiny size and he drives a tiny car in a casino.

... how is that being serious? Everything shown so far is just silly as hell. I'd love it if other shooters dared to do the same thing.

I think this video shows why DNF is a step back. D3D was all about speed, power and variety. DNF is trying for that while restricting itself to modern FPS designs, and falls flat in trying.

I can't agrue with that. I was saying this based on what I'd seen, and I had not seen that.

The problem isn't with DNF being an old-school game. That's exactly what it should have done*. Instead it tries to be like a modern game, but it adheres to a model of modern games that were modern 7 or 8 years ago.

Apart from that, the basic gameplay is garbage. Regardless of what kind of game it's trying to be, all it's base parts are rotten. The guns for instance, it feels like the weapons are ripped from some sort of Duke Nukem mod someone made with UT engine a decade ago.

* But that's simply not possible, because they started making this game with the idea that they were making the next best thing. How could they have ever known that simply remaking D3D would be the only truly viable option so many years later?

Some of you are saying that's what Gearbox or 3Drealms did, like this is some kind of ode to the shooters of yore, but it's simply not true.

Time ta STEP IT UP
First time I've EVER bought a Special Edition version of a game. I've played thought Duke Nukem 3D about 20 times and that's no lie.

Demo was subpar -- but I bet the final version will be a lot better. Either way, as long as I get my dose of Duke, I'm happy.

Exactly this. The only thing we were promised over the years was Duke. There was no marketing BS about revolutionary gameplay or "this is going to be THE BEST GAME ever cause it was in development for so long".

Good job Buckethead. Subscribed. I kinda liked the demo but, had some issues with it. Still getting the game though. It's Duke Nukem Forever. Always bet on Duke. Got my new avatar all set

In a perfect world, the money I used to buy Forever is going toward Gearbox's own Nukem game.

In this game, Duke is an aging dudebro who won't let the world forget how awesome he once was and how he saved all our babes. Except the world has forgotten and he's a broke bum. He's a mess; beard, long hair and trampy clothes. Then the aliens show up again and he thinks this is his time to reclaim his glory. Cut to montage of him cleaning himself up and walking out looking like classic Duke, followed by people asking "What the fuck do you look like, dude?"

Throughout the game, Duke keeps running into the EDF, who I imagine are typical modern day Gears/Bulletstorm dudebros and are actually winning the fight against the aliens. Duke, however, keeps shitting on their efforts and attempting to show them up, failing each time. I want this to be that whole "Snake is outdated" thing from Metal Gear Solid 4, but applied to Duke Nukem with the best parody ever.

In a perfect world though. Like the one that has a good Duke Nukem Forever.

I would buy this game.

( not referring to that particular case, nor your post but rather a general thought )

I fear that every single flaw and bad design choice of the game is going to be chalked up to " But lol it's camp! It's like 1995! It's supposed to be this bad. Boobs!"

I'd really like to know what part of this demo felt like a duke game because it sure as hell wasn't the gameplay. :(

Yeah, that boat is already rowing along nicely. It'll become very apparent once the reviews are in, which I'm guessing won't be too kind.

Man. I really want to spend the money on this to thank Gearbox for having the real Balls of Steel here. And, I am positive I will pick it up this year. Just not at launch.

Still debating on if i'll pick this up at launch. I'm more interested in the MP side of things.

just found something super AWESOME!

If you have the PC demo...

while ingame, just type "dnweapons" (without the "")and you have all the weapons of the game! (you autoomatically pic up 2 and the rest lies on the bottom where you stood!")

There's a lot of Negative Nancying going on in this thread. What would Duke say if he could see you guys whining?

I was genuinely psyched for DNF. When the first previews came out and all those "game journalists" kept whining about how the game felt dated, I criticized them, because of course the damn game was gonna feel dated. I just wanted to kick aliens in the face and play with all the interactive shit in the levels, but the demo left a bad taste in my mouth, and I already knew not to have great expectations.

I just don't think Gearbox could ever have enough time to undo all the terrible, terrible things Broussard has done to Duke.

edit: of course, if you can ignore all those things and enjoy the game for what it is (whatever that might end up being), then more power to you

I have my Balls of Steel edition preordered. I really enjoyed the demo, and have been waiting for so, so long. Hard to believe it is almost here.

Not a fan of the thread subtitle though. The 14 Years one mentioned earlier is better, though I might have gone with 'always bet on duke'.

I was going to just buy it off Steam, but no. I want a physical copy of Duke Nukem Forever. Good or bad, it's a piece of gaming history. I just hope it's either awesome or so bad that it becomes awesome.

For me, I have to admit that I'm almost more curious to experience all of the stuff that Broussard had been working on. If this had become a new game by Gearbox, I think I would have been more disappointed. What we have here is most definitely the same game that 3D Realms had been working on and its storied history is why I'm so interested in it.

It's not going to be a great game, but it's definitely going to be an interesting experience.

Yep, I'm buying a physical copy as well. This is something one must own.

I'm going back and forth keeping my Amazon pre-order.

The demo really turned me off from the game, and I'm worried this will drop like a brick in price.

I'm usually a huge fan of post processing, but I have to admit that the game almost looks better with the features turned off. The way they implemented those effects here appears really cheap and ugly. Depth of field is typically something I love, but it looks terrible here.

Does anyone remember the Wassssup? commercial back in the day featuring video game characters? Duke Nukem was the best. "Hey Dukie! Pick up the phone!".

Anyway, I'm ready. I've been on this hype train for a bit too long. It's time for me to stop at the station and get a Coke.

The other effects look pretty good to me, but wtf at that DoF. Looks like they take the background and reduce the resolution, then scale it up to get that blurry look.

the demo was exactly what i wanted it to be. it's like a game from 99 with a modern graphics engine. it's over the top and dated and wonderful. it's the game i should have been playing circa 2000 but with better graphics.

i'm going to have a lot of fun playing this. physical copy naturally. since it's steam works, there is zero downside to getting a store bought version.

Yeah, most of the post processing is pretty poor. Shader Model 2.0 welcomes you to 2003!

DNF welcomes you to 2003!

I do kind of agree. The level where you fetch the gas, for instance, is actually very 90s. No direct indication of what you are supposed to do, no way point, just a large open area with a few possible unclear possibilities. You stumble around in the same way you might have in games from that era.

I got a question after reading some of the complaints about the demo... have you guys ever played a demo, thought it was the most boring and horrible thing, but when the final game came out, it was incredible? This happens too often for me, especially this generation. It's almost like they put year old demos out that are unfinished at best, but the final product is hardly a reflection of the demo.

Just a thought..

There's always the possibility that this is just an awful demo. However, on the few times that this has happened, I can tell that the core mechanics work. It's usually what pushes me to buy the full version despite a demo.

The core mechanics here are, in my opinion, not good and not fun. If the levels pick up, then I will continue through broken gameplay to experience what's thrown at me. God knows I've done it before. But as I stand now, I'm seeing boring levels and bad gameplay.
