Hang on a bit, I know sales are good and all but it's no different to any other December:



Considerably down from last year overall I'd say

Over 100k we had:

PS2: 50+
XB: 21
GC: 15
GBA: 21
NDS: 2

And well over 110 altogether.

The industry is dying.

Yeah, but that was 2004 with GTA, Halo, MGS3, etc. 2005 was much less exciting for new releases compared to last year. Not to mention the Xbox having its lifespan truncated.

Exactly, those numbers were expected in 2004 as it was one of the biggest years for gaming ever. But all this year we heard from people "Oh gaming is dying" in every other thread. That makes these numbers all the more impressive.

Fair enough, but of the big December sellers (WWE, Need For Speed, Madden, Mario Party) they are the ones doing the 300k+, 400k+ along with a couple of others.

It's just same old if you ask me, certainly nothing to warrant "oooh wow, look at those sales". Apart from DS and PSP everything is down on last year.

Why wouldn't Madden 06 sell roughly as well as Madden 05 last year? Same with NFS, same with NBA Live, same with WWE, Tony Hawks etc.

Yeah, I wish I could have seen this info before wasting my time creating a thread where I thought there may be a shift happening in the games industry towards Xbox. Doesn't matter what third parties do for games, in the minds of consumers Playstation rules all.

Depends. PDZ's 2 combined SKUs might be over 100k.
COD2 probably.
DOA only had 2 days of sales.
It was already confirmed that 2 of EA's 360 titles were over 100k(Madden and NFS most likely).

My point is that even in its 5th year with a year that didn't stand up to previous years, the numbers are still fairly consistant. With all the talk you heard all year you'd be expecting a huge dropoff in sales, but there isn't.

Well that's not strictly true, but still.

Madden 06 did sell less than 05, Need For Speed sold less than last year, Mario Party 7 did less than 6, NBA live sold less etc- around 80% of previous 2004 numbers for the same so again it's nothing any different to what I think we could have expected really- similar numbers but about a 20% decline with the approach of the new gen of consoles.

It's not unusual for software to still do well at the end of a console's lifespan. The GC is still doing some strong numbers no doubt with Smash Bros, Mario Sunshine etc on 150k+ same as last couple of years, the GC's problem has been lack of software this year.

What is impressive is 1.5m hardware for PS2, you'd have thought everyone has one by now and it's looking like another 4-5m for 2006 isn't out of reach.

PSP software sales look good for Dec, only 7 over 100k but 5 over 200k is pretty good and keeping up with DS (although of course if you combine Nintendogs as you maybe should then it's probably 600k+ but then only 5 games over 100k).

Nope.

Current shipments hit 100M back on November.

USA NPD: 32M
Japan: 20M+ (? not sure about this)
Western Europe: > 30M
Canada > 5M units

That gives 87M units, and the PS2 has shipped to more regions than any other system I believe. Worldwide units are a bitch to get.

Also to think that there are upwards of 10M PS2's out there in warehouses / retail shelves seems a bit crazy. But, there are plenty who would probably call the PS2 shipment numbers fantasy.

It's on around 35m at the moment i think in US + Canada and about 34m in other territories so yeah about 35+34+22 at the moment = 91m.

I think in the US (and similar in the 'other' territory) maybe 4.5m next year, 3m 2007 and maybe another 3m total as it tails off- so 35+4.5+6 = 45m US and same in 'other' (Europe mainly).

GTA is still having pretty freaking good sales is it is indeed the 300k PSP game (it has to be). Not console GTA sales, but it'll stay on the charts for a while.

MK though :O All Ninty has to do is bundle the new SMB with the DS SP next holiday season. That would win easily.

About half of last year. The main reason PS2 did so well in 2005 was off the back of 2004 in jan-march, sales have been dropping quite considerably over the year to around 20k a week.

So you think it's going to sell half again as much as it has in the last 5.5 years with it's successor coming out next year and the next gen coming in? What, as a budget machine? It'll still sell some good numbers, sure, but it's gonna start dropping off at some point !
