E3 2011 Nintendo Press Conference Thread: What's in your coffee? [Over]

-PXG- said:
If you cannot grasp that this is a new console, and not just an addon to existing hardware, you're a fucking moron and have a god awful attention span. Fuck me sideways.

IT'S NOT CONFUSING AT ALL!!!!

It is a bit. Yes, it is. People are thrown because they did this in reverse. Usually the system is announced first, along with the controller tucked away to the side. They literally just announced a controller and said virtually nothing about the system.

It's understandable that people are going, "Wait, WTF?"

I mean, they show this thing and give very little explanation beyond: "It's gonna change everything, revolutionize gaming, trust us! *wink*" and that's it?

I wasn't part of the conference, but so far I am on a coffee break and read up on the Wii U or whatever... I don't think I expected this little info to be revealed. Although the HD pic of the new HD Zelda looks amazing.

Pretty disappointing conference all around (and I was keeping my expectation in check). Nothing really groundbreaking that the rumors didn't already state.

What was the supposed surprise that the rumors were speaking of? Potential cross platform play between WiiU and 3DS?

Basically, so far Nintendo has failed in their attempt to create a hardcore/casual console.
The graphics tech will be outdated and outclassed by PS4 and 720. And frankly the hardware itself looks too small to really be anything but a slightly upgraded 360.
Who the hell wants to play Hardcore games with fucking circle pads?

And it will sell fucking gangbusters.

Gut reaction:

'Welcome to PS3/360 games with 'innovations' we haven't fully figured out ourselves yet.'

That's what the message felt like.

And the latter is the biggest surprise for me - there was no strong central message around what this controller was going to do for games. I think Nintendo's still figuring out use-cases. They focussed on convenience of remote play, video sharing, web browsing, video chat - but not actually much by way of game orientated use-cases (other than a Zelda inventory, lol). With Wii, it was immediately obvious, at least to me, what the potential was (and check the record - I gushed over it immediately). This seems like a much less obvious and incomplete picture.

On a side note, I guess it shouldn't be surprising that Nintendo can't coax third parties into a generational transition wrt content, but it leaves a big big question for me - will this stand up to the next gen, or will it be a late-game snack between Playstations and Xboxs. If I had confidence in the former I'd feel a lot more interested in this.

Zelda and the tech demo were real demonstrations of what the WiiU can do. Zelda HD was even more in-depth then the MGS 3D demo for 3DS. Games will look as good if not better than that Zelda demo. Go read the IGN impressions, very positive all around.

Terrible show.

Spend tons of time gabbing about Zelda, but don't show a new exciting Skyward Sword hands-on.
WiiU looks like a bigger port machine than 3DS, and they're making ports seem like a killer hook.
No new IPs (big surprise).
Smash Bros is the only 1st WiiU game announced, and they don't even show it.
And so much talking about absolutely nothing.

On par with Microsoft's...but at least they had plenty of funny gif material thanks to Kinect. Sony's wasn't that good either, but I guess they "win" by default.

Looking forward to Mario 3DS and Luigi 2 though.

is this gonna be another instance of 3rd party developers not making the wii u version of the game as good as the others? they should went into if its easy to develop for?

the flying bird demo was *realtime* and partially controllable according to Kotaku.

as is the HD Zelda demo

Just wanted to quote and bold this again for future reference.

Aaaand it's a fact. Nintendo won E3. I want Wii U! Now! Hyyyype! :D

The only thing they missed was showing the console. And the technical specs. And I really wanted haptic feedback or whatever it's called. Oh and the price!

I'm surprised they showed as much as they did for the WiiU. Remember when the Wii was first revealed? Nothing. Considering it's still over a year away, it wasn't too disappointing. Everything else was, though.

So Nintendo showed a game lineup of games that will already be released six months to a year before, on consoles people already own, and this is somehow supposed to make me want to buy their new system?

I think one of the more interesting ideas around the new controller is how it's something of a base controller. In the post conference videos they kept showing one person using the new controller and up to 4 people using wiimotes. They are banking on people using the previous hardware and not just for backwards compatibility. They really want to keep the wiimotes useful and worth the investment.

I just really hope developers use the new controller for the "new" kinds of game-play it allows. It was smart of Nintendo to build their "gimmick" right into a traditional controller, it makes it something of a no brainer to do things like make plays on the screen, hide individual players info from other players, or do that panoramic view.

As far as graphics go, I don't go to my console to be blown away. I have a great PC I built 2 years ago that I doubt the next PS or XBOX will be able to match, and I'll probably update it by then anyway. But whatever, I buy Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games, so I'm going to get it sooner or later.

That list makes me happy, but so very very mad.

- Confirmation of Dragon Quest Monsters 2 Joker
- Confirmation of DS Kirby
- NO XENOBLADE
- NO THE LAST STORY

Nintendo's roundtable better have announcement to this shit, because all I wanted was good Wii support. Wii U will be gangbusters after the Gaf meltdowns.

It'll probably be stealth announced on the website.

wat

The fact that it's getting all these games already confirms that it's easy to develop for.
What is this foolishness in this thread?

In the logo at the end. Kirby Wii. Rhythm Pardise and Mario Party 9. Kirby is the only one that says Wii but the others must be too since they were not talked about at all. Which is my biggest problem with the show really. We know Wii is dying but at least read it its last rites rather than deny anything but Zelda exists.
Almost as bad as nothing. Not really a Zelda fan, so I might buy a single Wii game by the end of the year (Kirby). At least the 3DS is looking better, Mario looked awesome.

There barely mentioned the new console, thats why so many got the idea it was a addon. Hell peter moore had to tell us "theres a new console"

I don't understand. I just don't get the Wii U. A console based on the idea of accessing inventory and other stupid shit on a second screen. Really, Nintendo? Could you really not demonstrate a better purpose for the second screen? I guess not since the DS has been out for years and thats the best developers have come up with.

I hope you bailed on the conference after posting this stupid shit. I you watched you are just trying to stir up shit

Graphics looked nice, controller looked (potentially) great. HD Zelda of course raised hype.

I must say I'm really disappointed they didn't demo more of Skyward Sword. How low key are they going for a Zelda game?

So does this new console use DVD or Blu-Ray or cartridges?

I think DVD, but still, how underwhelming in terms of details.

Wiiu is not ready. Put it back in the oven and bring it back out when you have some actual ideas for the thing.

Sweet! It takes USB HDDS!

Based on?

Looking at the screenshots already posted and the tweets going out. Will it have some 1080p games like the PS3 does? Sure. But people expecting Zelda 1080p I think are going to be disappointed.

I doubt the next system from Sony/Microsoft will even do 1080p consistently.

I can't believe I took a bus back from school just to see this shit. I'm so fucking disappointed. I expected Xenoblade and The Last Story localized and a bunch of first party Wii U games. I only buy Nintendo consoles for their first party games, so the third party stuff was kind of boring (especially when I can buy the games shown before the console even releases). The only thing they sort of delivered on was 3DS support. I'm pretty sure I won't be buying the Wii U though. They've already burned me on the Wii, and today they really needed to win back the hardcore gamers. I don't think they won anyone back. That conference was a total snooze (apart from HD Zelda).

Oh, and Nintendo's site is down for me. Bleh.

I wish the mods didn't lock that thread about Xenoblade and Last Story... I have some serious public raging to do!

You don't know that. You have no idea what the specs are for this system. Just because they only showed ports at this point doesn't mean that it can't do more. The tech demo they showed was pretty impressive. I think you need to wait until you know more before making assumptions.
That was impressive to you? 2008 cards could do those kinds of tech demos.

Final scores

MS: D
Sony: C
Nintendo: A

Thank you for saving E3 yet again, Nintendo. Wii U looks awesome, 3DS is getting the games this year, and the Zelda anniversary stuff is great.

Considering you don't have the option to buy their new console until late next year, I'm guessing you'll probably have to wait until next E3 to seem something you want.

I thought the conference was really well done. Sweet orchestral Zelda 25th presentation (loved when Miyamoto invited Tezuka, Koizumi and Aonuma on stage to get their long overdue moment in the spotlight, very classy of him), free Zelda 4 Swords (!), Link's Awakening on eshop today, Mario 3Ds and the return of the Tanooki suit after a 20 year absence, great first half (not getting Star Fox 3Ds though, camera feature is lame and in no way makes up for lazinesss of not including online). Wii U name and concept is a perfect way to keep a winning brand while expanding on it and trying to win back hardcore fans. Controller looks a bit big but the "no need for TV" is a great concept along with the alternate features and possibilities it provides, lots of new 3rd party support, a new Tekken, Batman Arkham at launch to name a few? I'm on board.

The new Nintendo console (lol Wii U) is going to get year old scraps that's barely an improvement over the CURRENT gen consoles and you guys are seriously defending that?

Seriously take off the goggles for once.
Because God knows new games won't ever be announced after June 7, 2011.

I have to say though, that screen and that stage that Nintendo had is incredible

Can't believe they wasted all this hype though. Think this might've been the most hyped Nintendo conference I remember and it all just disappated into the night.
