E3 2011 Nintendo Press Conference Thread: What's in your coffee? [Over]

I think the biggest problem was explaining it and doing so by not only focusing on the controller first but not even going over the console itself at all.

The PS4 and Xbox720 will look good, but it won't be as big as an SD to HD transition.

I guess you haven't seen what PC games look like nowadays. They can do much better than this generation. MUCH better.

Uncharted 3 looked better than that Zelda Wii U demo.

More useless comparisons how about about certain pc gamers types wanting BF3 come in and tell all groups they don't want anything but that because UC3 and nothing on consoles looks as good. Spare most of us who to want keep the topic going this kind of thinking you're only leading the topic deeper in to troll territory.

1) The controller.
2) No lag streaming.

Those are things that are going to appeal to the average consumer. Take off the GAF glasses for a minute.
GAF glasses? Cool controller aside, Nintendo are a generation behind in technology, online, and services. More than a generation in some respects.

GAF glasses is thinking this is even just about games anymore. The 360 and PS3 are indicative of their respective manufacturers' increasingly successful attempts to become all-around media hubs selling you social media, youtube, netflix, live sports, cloud content libraries, etc.

Nintendo sold a lot of Wiis and a few first-party games this generation. Microsoft and Sony sold a shit ton of games and services, and that's how you make make money and foster a consumer base who use your device constantly to make you more money.

720/PS4 could be half-hearted, half-leaps forward in technology, retaining their existing infrastructure of content and services, and they would still lap this thing.

I guess we can all look forward to playing ports of games from last-gen while dad is watching the baseball, though. The controller is cool as hell (please, someone, do RTS/turn-based strategy on consoles right with this), but in every other respect they are now five years behind, minimum, and with a weaker unique appeal than last time -- especially now that MS and Sony are on their own 'waggle and shovelware' grinds.

WiiU spec

from NINTENDO press site

Launches: 2012
Size: Approximately 1.8 inches tall, 6.8 inches wide and 10.5 inches long.
New Controller: The new controller incorporates a 6.2-inch, 16:9 touch screen and traditional button
controls, including two analog Circle Pads. This combination removes the traditional
barriers between games, players and the TV by creating a second window into the
video game world. The rechargeable controller includes a Power button, Home
button, +Control Pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, L/R buttons and ZL/ZR buttons. It includes a
built-in accelerometer and gyroscope, rumble feature, camera, a microphone, stereo
speakers, a sensor strip and a stylus.
Other Controls: Up to four Wii Remote™ (or Wii Remote Plus) controllers can be connected at once.
The new console supports all Wii™ controllers and input devices, including the
Nunchuk™ controller, Classic Controller™, Classic Controller Pro™ and Wii Balance
Board™.
Media: A single self-loading media bay will play 12-centimeter proprietary high-density
optical discs for the new console, as well as 12-centimeter Wii optical discs.
Video Output: Supports 1080p 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i. Compatible cables include HDMI,
component, S-video and composite.
Audio Output: Uses AV Multi Out connector. Six-channel PCM linear output through HDMI.
Storage: The console will have internal flash memory, as well as the option to expand its
memory using either an SD memory card or an external USB hard disk drive.
CPU: IBM Power®-based multi-core microprocessor.
Other: Four USB 2.0 connector slots are included. The new console is backward compatible
with Wii games and Wii accessories.
Note: Details are subject to change.

Bolded for, well, obvious reasons.

People were expecting way too much from this conference, the console's a year away from release. And as far as power goes, everything showed by third parties have been ports, so the only thing we can go by is the bird demo. Once we get a HD, high bitrate version of that, we might have some early idea of what the console's really capable of.

I can see a Detective game using the controller as the notebook. You can interview someone and write down notes as they answer your questions or scribble down a license plate number of suspicious car. You and another player can be partners and interview 2 different people at the same time. You can use the new controller as a map create a plan for taking out the criminals by drawing routes and setting up a raid.

That and Kojima's Transfarring has a new home to claim.

I expect PS1 to PS2 differences. Which is...still pretty good dispite both being SD.

This thread has reconfirmed to me just how stupid the average person is. Hopefully, going forward the moderators will be more selective with who they grant posting priveledges to

How did shit just get real? Nintendo will come out with a ps3/360 equivalent in the latter half of the generation?
They didn't even show much. Can't judge it yet, really. But I think it was to be expected that it's not fully next-gen.

You know the Gamecube does more than ten million polygons, rite?

So we have no idea what a game that is designed from the ground up for the WiiU will look like but people are already saying it can't top 360/PS3? Makes perfect sense.

Fairly easily, you can't leave your house with the Wii U controller.
That and we still don't know the range of the WiiU controller. So dreams of playing your console games on the toilet may or may not transpire
unless you keep your console in the bathroom

That's it. I'm done with Nintendo. Last straw. It'll be hard to ignore Devil Survivor on 3DS, but I'll manage. I will not buy another Nintendo game, console, or handheld until they announce this shit.

If you were European, you'd have missed out on *so many* good games by now if you'd adopted that policy.

Core games: Wii U vs. PS3/360

PROS:
Use controller to see mini-map/inventory/etc.
Graphically on par (maybe?)

CONS:
Controls like ass
Poor online service (likely?)

So basically it comes down to whether you prefer a gimmick or functionality

or you can just use a pen and paper!

So what was that EA announcement? What was the partnership?

It sounded like John R was going to announce Origin on Wii U, but then he just ended it.

We need to keep in mind too that some of this could change since it's so far out.

All sony and ms need to do is announce a new console, with full compatibility with all the dlc you have bought this generation, to take a lot of the sheen of this

Better draw distance, lighting, resolution (most games don't run in 1080p), more polys, better textures, better framerates, you know, that shit developers who make games like call of duty, halo, uncharted, etc care about.

This console has no direction as of this conference, it's aiming to take down.. the xbox 360 and ps3? wii already did that and look where it is now, being outsold monthly by consoles with massive third party support, the third party for this system is dead as soon as other consoles are announced, if all nintendo can show is ports of games we can all play THIS YEAR, they are fucked.

Candidly, I can not believe someone with a console named Wii or Wii U would remotely have the sack to make fun of pronouncing Vita.

true
people will never be satisfied until games are injected directly into their veins

Zelda 25th anniversary gets a series of orchestra concerts that 99% of people watching won't even be able to attend, and a release of Link's Awakening on the eshop? FAIL!

No Skyward Sword release date? FAIL

This comes up every time, but improved technology doesn't just mean better resolutions and more polygons, it means more memory to draw bigger environments with more objects, more processing power to do better AI... more freedom for developers in terms of what they can create, sustain, and put on screen.

It's not just graphics that increase, provided developers aren't lazy. The scale and depth of experiences do too.

The nintendo faithful taking their ball and going home

Why o why are people basing Wii U's strengths on multiplats?

Reggie himself confirmed that they are not "Wii U games" (you know, games made to fully use the Wii U specs).

No, all they have to do is announce improved updated remote play (which you know they did have first) and they could match most of what the new system offers.

Up to. Just like the PS3/360 can go up to 1080p.

No way this thing renders it's games in 1080p.

I don't think it will render at 1080p, but I know games will run at 60FPS and that's what counts.

You just shouldn't put Uncharted so close to Call of Duty in the same statement.
