EA has shut down Mythic Entertainment

As much as it sucks to see people lose their jobs I can't really say I will miss them. Their last two games, Warhammer Online and that Dungeon Keeper mobile title ranged from incredibly flawed to outright terrible. I played WAR for quite awhile with friends and saw Mythic be incredibly slow to add new content, fix broken/overpowered content or generally respond meaningfully to the concerns of the fanbase. WAR was a MMO that went on for quite awhile that only had one major content expansion yet maintained a subscription model until its very last day.

I really enjoyed WAR's PVP, the keep sieges and battlegrounds were pretty fun.

But the game was so unfinished I never made it past the free month.

Still, good memories, RiP mythic.

I'll never forget my time in DAoC. Had some great times in that game. Sorry to see Mythic go like this.

People losing their jobs always sucks, but it does make me happy that Dungeon Keeper mobile apparently did badly enough to warrant shutting the studio down.

Once acquired by EA they may not realize it yet, but they are already dead.

Hopefully the dev team finds other work quickly. DAOC is/was a good game.

Wow, I did not know this. Was this a fairly recent development?

It happened like a month ago. It was announced the websites for the two games and then the two games were placed on Greenlight and got accepted a week later.

Most of the development team that was responsible for DAoC left years ago after Warhammer bombed. Now they are either working on The Elder Scrolls Online, Rift, or the spiritual successor to DAoC by Mark Jacobs new development studio.

Mythic were clearly not responsible for the debacle that was Dungeon Keeper iOS

At least it's silly to blame the entirety of the game on them. Pretty sure Mythic didn't wake up one day and said "Yes! A F2P Dungeon Keeper Mobile game with horrible monetization! Of course!"

Warhammer Online was the perfect example of a rushed, unfinished product.

The starting zones were pretty good - but the further you got, the worse everything became. Not to mention the horrible input-lag, terrible class balance and there were no way to level up between a certain level range except mindless grinding, due to a lack of content and broken exp rewards.

But they did bring forth the idea of "Public Quests", which seem to be in every MMO now.

What I don't get is why doesn't EA not want to be seen as a piece of shit? Didn't they have one brain among them that thought maybe making a shitty f2p Dungeon Keeper sham was a bad idea? And when the suits fuck up, they fire the developers? Why does EA make it so easy to hate them?

Lol bullshit. Mass Effect 3 wasn't bad in terms of sales, reviews, gameplay, or multiplayer. The only real blemish is the story and only the ending.

SWTOR has gotten far better than it used to be. Frankly it just needed another yr of development.

So please don't present your opinion as a well known fact when the opposite is popular opinion.

mass effect went from rpg to squad based shooter. if you view bioware as an rpg developer then them changing their games away from rpgs could be seen as the first step into that mass grave of developers.

I loved Warhammer, but from Tier 3 onwards it was downright poor.

Input lag was a problem, but still had very fond memories of the game, Loved a bit of Nordenwatch and RvR in the Tier 2 Chaos lands.

I think they were also the ones who brought achievements into the MMO genre with their Tome of Knowledge, though perhaps a different MMO did it before them.

Got my username from my character in DAoC. /salute Mythic

Wish Imperator got made. I thought that game looked quite interesting.

That sucks,I have mostly find memories pic Warhammer Online. Never paged another class in any MMO as awesome as my Warrior Priest

Remember folks. This is your fault, you entitled, cheap, jackasses.

Its not EA's fault their business plan and mismanagement totally whiffed what consumers actually want. Its your fault. Now, go buy a $3 battle pack of xp boosts and decals.

I guarantee some business guy that was part of EA and not Mythic forced Dungeon Keeper down the path it went, and the only people who pay for it are the developers.

Maybe if Warhammer online had any PVE content worth a damn people would of stuck around. Game was excellent, but completely unfinished and unpolished. Some parts were a gem, other parts were beyond awful.

too bad the executives that likely forced the business model are still employed and making plenty of money.

More like if they didn't waste the majority of their budget making worthless PvE content that noone played after a few levels, the world maps were huge for a pvp game and completely empty of players.

The endgame for pvp was incomplete and obviously rushed. They were obviously trying to attract the WoW crowd with the PvE focus while 'enticing' people into PvP with the zones.

Studio has been a shell of itself for a while.

Mark Jacobs is working on camelot unchained, iirc a lot of mythic staff were moved over to work on SWTOR.

edit: I liked warhammer's pvp but I think there was a lot of conflict in direction and they ended up trying to do way too much. If they had just focused on pvp the game would have ended up much better. Camelot Unchained seems to be taking this direction (focusing on pvp) so I have high hopes for it, even though 4 million is very little to develop an mmo.

I actually had some good fun with Wrath of Heroes and was kind of still playing it when it was shut down. The only issues I had was how long it took to grind out the characters and there was only one healer in the game that costed way more than any other character and the team with no healer always lost.
