EA Lays Off Staff Across All Battlefield Studios Following Record-Breaking Battlefield 6 Launch

Individuals are being informed that the layoffs are taking place as part of a "realignment" across the Battlefield studios, as the team continues its ongoing, live service support for Battlefield 6 following launch. All four studios will remain operational, though the layoffs seem to be impacting a variety of teams across multiple studios and offices. IGN has reached out to EA for comment on total number and types of roles impacted, as well as for the specific reasons for the layoffs.

These layoffs come just months after the unexpected death of Battlefield franchise head Vince Zampella in a car accident. They also come as EA is preparing to be acquired by an investor group composed of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners for approximately $55 billion. However, the acquisition has not yet closed (it's expected to close in the first quarter of the 2027 financial year, or April, May, and June of this year). IGN understands internally, EA is stating that the layoffs are unrelated to the acquisition.

Fuck EA? Fuck EA.

Massive team to make the game game launches only needs half the staff to keep it going , sack the luddites. Rinse repeat

Then just to hire them all back in a year or two. It's dumb. It's almost like......they should be used to create a different game or something now.

Bad launch: layoffs
Expected launch: layoffs
Record breaking launch: layoffs

This industry surviving this long without another major crash is a miracle.

Western AAA is like a degernate gambler that win, lose, or draw will mortgage their entire house, sell off their family's belongings, and strip the pipes for another chance to gamble.

Got to make the next Fortnite.

bummer. AI factoring in or not, this is one of those rare times with this industry where devs just seem like cattle. Ubi a few years back also made me have this sorta grim realization.

What they expect them to make exactly? Quadrillion dolars?
Seriously, this entire generation is fucked. Everyone is fucking retarded thinking they can get Fortnite piece of the pie. Gaming industry needs harsher regulation and heavier punishment.

honestly anyone in this shithole industry should get out, you can probably earn better while doing less stressful/demanding work in any other development field.
let them ai slop themselves to another crash.

Record-breaking launch, sure, but they only retained 10% since.
Management should be the ones to be fired then, try different ones and get the devs to work on what needs to be done to get players back.
But then again, after the Saudi deal it was only a matter of time until they began gutting studios to try and reduce costs.

It's probably because Red Sec isn't selling a bazillion cosmetic skins. EA keeps hoping Battlefield will be something other than Battlefield.

They've fumbled the fuck out of the content roadmap for this one though. 5 months in and we have 3 maps, 1 of which the community hates. EA probably has most of it's dev power focused on a Battlefield 7 because they've been very clear they want this to be an annual franchise but no one in the Battlefield community seems to want that. It's a classic case of making some money isn't good enough. Anything that isn't fortnight isn't worth doing to these assholes.

Edit: Also don't forget all the Saudi shit with the buyout. Probably a major factor here.

In Japan layoffs arent allowed unless you can prove you are about to go bankrupt. Releasing the best selling game of last year and instead of sharing profits, laying off people should be criminal. People should fucking go to jail over this.

I still cant believe corporations are posting record profits and laying off the workers that made it happen while giving the CEOs trillion dollar packages. Fuck this world. We need a revolution in the streets.

How exactly does it generate money after they bought it 6 months ago
- seasons
- cosmetic skins

But I would also say...the numbers are not the problem (people forget this game is on consoles as well, same for Marathon btw).

This is 100% because of AI.

It's not a miracle actually. It's just dumb management, because those same people get re-hired. And some times by the same company. The workflow pipeline is just stupid.

AI says it is due to AI

We live in the world where the launch quality doesn't matter, gamers are unpaid beta testers. Although you could make a case retaining more than 10% of players by having better quality game Day 1 and shipping content faster can contribute to better player retention I don't think this is the sort of sophisticated talk EA understands.

It's almost like the realities of video game production necessitate a gig economy. The sooner people wise up to this, the better. Nobody complains about how film and TV production is also a gig economy and always has been (actually they do, but who cares).

Cutthroat as hell. This game was successful as hell. So having a successful game isn't enough to save your job? Just capitalist vultures doing what they do.

This is absolutely pathetic, and god does it suck. Battlefield 6 was extremely successful, sold very well, and all that. I mean, over 7 million copies in its first 3 days of release, lol. But then layoffs.

The AAA/big budget games industry is in such a laughable state. It feels like the majority are going from job to job because studios keep closing and/or layoffs keep happening. I'm truly happy for the ones that are able to stay at a AAA/big budget studio for more than 2 years.

Its such a success we had to fire our workers so they didnt overwork themselves to death, its for the good of our ex employees.

This wasn't a standard before 80/90s. This video explains why this shit is happening very well in this part:

I can totally get laying off people when your company is going under and you need to save it, but with record profits?! Something is very wrong with corporations... I guess that's how late stage capitalism looks like.

That's the natural result of globalization. Endless worker supply, faceless multinational corporations that have exactly zero repercussions to fear because they can just switch countries and even continents on a whim and are so big and powerful that they are practically above the law.

People were warned about this a hundred years ago and still let it happen and voted the parties and politicians that made a nightmare reality.

I think that's an accepted reality already. A typical AAA game is made by a core team + hundreds of outside contractors who are there on 6-18 month contracts. It's like that in the non-gaming software development as well. I'm on a project now that consists of 50ish internal FTEs and close to 100 external contractors.

Imagine creating one of the best Battlefield games in recent memory....only to get fucking LAID OFF. WOW. You are fucked no matter which way you chose.

Get a small team or build something solo.

Balatro guy gotta be swimming in $.

E33 was a monster game with a studio of less than 100. Modern AAA big teams ain't it anymore

It's not about the launch, guys, it's about the fact that the game is basically irrelevant six months later and they haven't retained players.

This game was meant to be the start of a major live push, not just a big launch game.
