EA's Origin might contain Spyware [Update: New EULA]

IndieJones said:
Is there any way to read the EULA for a game without opening it and therefore being unable to return it? Is saying to the store clerk, "I don't agree to the End-User Licence," enough to let you get your money back? How about on a digital distribution service like Steam? I'm actually curious.
Well most places already open the box/case to put anti security measures in place. You're only tearing through the store's seals not the publisher's.

Check any other EULA from a service like this and you'll see they're all pretty much the same.

yep this is just bash origin thread nr 53565 from steam fanboys who gets worse for every day that passes. What's next, Origin causes cancer?

if they could get money from it and get away with it, you damn better bet they would. (not kidding either lol)

What do you mean? Are you fine with EA having the legal right to take out anything they want from your HD?

Why shoot down a legitimate EULA concern when you can simply not saying anything of value whatsoever?

Pffhahahahahaha. So not wanting my private information collected by a company that will freely hand it out to others makes me a Steam fanboy? Get the fuck out of here.

If it did, and I'm not saying it does, they could just update the EULA to absolve them of all responsibility anyway. :)

Sigh...this is why I don't want to install any extra shit just to play some damn video games. Just let me run my purchased games service free, drm free, potential spyware free. Fuck.

Oh, like every service and software Google has?

Google and every other online company, just like every discount/store points card you have, so they can monitor your purchases and sell that data back to the companies.... Big brother is always watching....

Just don't download Origin or buy any EA games that require it. Seems simple enough to avoid for me.
No, I'd prefer to make an issue of it. Else other companies will start thinking they can get away with this crap. This sort of stuff shouldn't be tolerated by anyone, it's borderline illegal.

Well well well. They were after our vital essences after all.

Origin is cancer.

Joke post? Poor troll attempt? This can't be real can it?

I am glad that you have skimmed through thousands of EULA's to reach that conclusion.
BS

Oh god you're real.

You know how someone found out about this? He read the EULA. You know how someone found out about the fact that this isn't the same in the Steam EULA? He read it.
For every 10000 people there might be one who reads the whole damn thing. That's how people find out about bullshit like this. So as far as we know. Neither Impulse nor Steam collect data like that.
We don't need Origin apologists, just as we don't need Steam apologists. Collecting personal browsing data as a game service is laughable at best, despicable at worst.

No, i havent.

I think its you who have skimmed through thousands of EULA's to reach the conclusion that every one does this, because guess what: they dont.

Go ahead and prove me wrong, i'll wait.

Man this shit gets old. EA doesn't need internet white knights spewing ad hominem nonsense.

I wonder how mad you guys will get when u realize what google does with your information every time you search anything......
I use an addon to Chrome that was made by Google that blocks them from collecting data.

first problem is that you used "might" in thread title and act like it is a fact.

because its fact. Have you read the EULA people posted? i posted "might" in the thread title in case the article was wrong, turns out its not. The news broke a bit afterwards in RPS and other sites.

I like how you're trying to find another angle to defend EA instead of responding to my posts.

uh? this is a matter of region locking and is handled by the publisher with no input from Steam whatsoever. Different games get different release dates around the world, its been like that forever, the only thing Steam does is allow for the game to be released in retail earlier knowing that the actual release date will still be respected.

Steam IS rosebuds and lollipops. I know people like to hate on everything and specially on what's popular, but it is what it is, its a fucking fantastic service. The only complain i get about the service is that the PC has always been an open platform and consumers should have options on what they want and dont want to use. But to say that EA is worse than Steam, stating that steam is "bad", is just plain wrong.

Steam must be installed to play a Steamworks game. That was the takeaway. It's DRM and requires you to install and run a program to play the game. In the case of region locking, it can restrict you from playing the game.

I have no problem with steam. Personally, I really like it. It's not hating on steam, acting contrarian, or whatever deflecting status. It's just that Steam is very young as a service, at least how we know it. Like, EA-made games weren't really on Steam until 2008. It's simply concern to avoid naivete. If you want to believe a company is perfect, go for it. It's usually what spawns vehement defense towards criticism. Even criticism as unoffensive as saying a company isn't perfect. Where again was it stated that steam is bad?

anyway, my experience with Origin has been registering my retail games to the service. Even when the service had better deals than Steam, I waited and paid more for it on Steam. I haven't bought anything from it and the only foreseeable purchase I'll make for it will be the retail version of Battlefield 3, as it's the DRM for that title. I'm not going to avoid a good game because of a service...I'm not that crazy.

Well, Origin is dead in the water for me. Thing is, this kind of thing is only going to get worse in the future. This is because game consumers will generally accept any shit thrown at them. The Great Age of Gaming is coming to an end (or maybe it already has)?

Ugh, why won't they just be reasonable and put their product on Steam like every other publisher. EA is acting about as cool Activision right now.

Oh no, not those pesky Steam fanboys! Poor Origin.

What a load of BS.
