the intense amount of ridicule of Ed Milliband's appearance seems more than a little anti-Semitic at times.
I'm not from the UK, didn't know he was Jewish. The man just does magnificent face expressions.

He is labour/liberal.I'm not from the UK, didn't know he was Jewish. The man just does magnificent face expression. Oh, and I suppose part of the reason people like to mock him stems from the fact that he's a conservative
He is labour/liberal.
He is labour/liberal.
with an imagination like yours I doubt much surprises you at all.
Milliband is being made a mockery of based on his appearance, which in itself is disgusting, but I see no anti semitism at all.
yeah no, that's not the reason red ed is ridiculed. it's the way he came into power, it's his nonexistent policies, the weird faces he makes and the gaffes. that guy is in way over his head and it's hilarious.
if David Miliband would have won the election Labour would actually have a chance and be taken seriously.
and I think you're forgetting how people used to make fun of Gordon Brown. it's not anti-semitic anything.
The man is trying to be the first Jew prime minister since 1880, and every attack on him seems to be centred around the idea that he is different and weird. Of course there is legitimate criticisms of his leadership, I'm voting SNP myself.
However, the intense vilification campaign to de-legitimise him as a potential candidate is almost demented. That's because, whether people realise it or not, Miliband-bashing resonates with a poisonous sentiment that has been lurking for centuries in Europe. Compare Ed to the homogeneous origins of the men who lead the other main parties who suffer none of this defamation and are routinely hailed for their ability to seem like 'ordinary blokes'.
Anti-semitism isn't just bashing Jews, it's the concept of the parasitic outsider and it stems from the ethnocentric nationalism and nativist clichés that are currently experiencing a big resuscitation in modern European politics.

Is it bad that, as a non-Brit, the only impression/coverage I get about Miliband is through this thread and Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe? Or is it actually the best?
Not true, David is almost as unphotogenic as Ed, hard as it is to believe. The infamous banana eating pic followed him around for ages.
The funny thing is, if it was David Miliband, people wouldn't be making those jokes because David Miliband is a good looking guy.

Maybe it isn't nice, but the reason it is centred around him being different and weird is because he kind of looks a bit weird. It has nothing to do with him being Jewish. Of course it isn't something people would say if it was just some guy down the road, but the truth is, people tend not to look at politicians as human beings. They're public figures, so for some reason people see that as a license to make jokes and criticise them.
The funny thing is, if it was David Miliband, people wouldn't be making those jokes because David Miliband is a good looking guy.

David looks less semitic, but he was still the target of physical ridicule when he was in the cabinet,
Imagine if Ed Milliband was black and people were making fun of how his nose is wide or his lips are thick. Imagine if they posted mocking pictures of him eating a watermelon, instead of a jew eating a bacon sandwich. It would not stand.
60 members of the Milliband family were killed in the Holocaust, in the US that would be a story people would respect. In the UK, he's constantly derided for having 'no compelling personal story'.

this anti-semitic conspiracy only exists in your head. The vast majority don't even know he's Jewish, nor does he possess any "semitic features" that aren't present in all anglo-caucasian groups.
Then why aren't the other leaders ridiculed for their looks?
It doesn't matter if people know he's really a Jew or not, the point is his genes are different from the homogenous origins of pretty every other political leaders in modern Britain.

Napoleonthechimp said:This "people don't like him because he's Jewish" is dumb. I have never heard that brought up in relation to him at any point, except for the people accusing others of anti-semitism.

his genes are different from the homogenous origins of virtually every other political leaders in modern Britain. As a result, he looks distinctly different
a phenomenally popular target thanks to the growing nationalist sentiment in this country
lol.
They're nowhere near the demented obsession with Ed Milliband's appearance and you know it

It's been emotional.
Farage looks like kermit the frog though.
.
Wow at the discussion surrounding the nature of people ridiculing his facial expressions.
British politics has a long standing tradition of this and it's absolutely not linked to racial heritage.
Farage looks like kermit the frog though.
Basically, when it comes to stuff like this - we do literally see past race. Most people wouldn't even know Miliband is from a Jewish background anyway.
Also, the bacon sandwich thing had no connotations to that either. It was actually because he looked so bloody awkward with it.
The reign of Prime Minister Miliband will be long and glorious. All hail our leader.
I'm all for having a laugh at his rubbery faced expressions, but I draw the line at saying 'THIS MAN CANNOT LEAD US BECAUSE HE IS UGLY'.
Besides, if we've learned anything in recent weeks it's that the man is a world class swordsman of Errol Flynn stature.
Plus Ed is going to be a legendary PM. Ed bants in downing st are gonna be off the chain.
