Edge #284 | The Taken King

Seems to be a fairly polarising game, which is not all that surprising given it's genre. I'll definitely pick it up once it gets a bigger sale.

Yeah definitely. While I absolutely adore the game, it's a perfect realisation, for me, of the narrative exploration genre so far. I wouldn't recommend it to most people if they don't know what they're in for. It's a touching game, written and acted extremely well with a compelling, again to me, overarching narrative.

22 pages on Destiny? Ouch.

Anyway, more interested to see what's said about Crackdown 3 if anything new.

Nope, which is pretty jarring when you see them giving that, GZ and TPP the same score.

It's very British. Never underestimate chauvinism. Fun experience though.

It certainly has its appeal, but if you aren't big on walking simulators that revolve around piecing together a fragmented story and little else to do, it's not going to do much for you. Terrific VO performances, though.

For the record, I much preferred Dear Esther from the same devs, which is a much more atmospheric game with some genuinely unsettling Lovecraft undertones, even as it's quite a bit less interactive.

Not in my opinion. Severely lacks interactivity which hurts the game greatly for me. It makes zero use of the medium to tell it's story, and could have basically been a radio play and still got it's point across.

I'd give it an 8

Nope. I found it pretentious as fuck. But it has its moments of brilliance and it's very pretty to look at.

Destiny is "the best FPS in the universe," the cover claims. Hmmm, OK, if you say so.

Well, it's likely not the same reviewer that wrote both articles.

Unequivocally yes. Easily a 9/10 in my book.

I don't agree with the radio play comment at all. There were several moments when the audio and the visuals came together beautifully.

But I really enjoyed the whole experience. Pleased to see the Edge reviewer felt the same.
Okay, thanx guys.

8 for Rocket League seems fair as well (10 in my book but different strokes for different folks).

Surprised at the score fir everybodys gone to the rapture, this something I should be getting?

Huh.. is Everybody's Gone to the Rapture THAT good?

It's really good.

I hate walking simulators and went in with very low expectations. I only played it cos me and my partner love playing story-driven games together.

But yeah... It's really good. Mainly because the environment is totally compelling (brilliant open level design with lots of space to explore) and the voice acting is unbelievable. We haven't quite finished it, but it's surprisingly fun for a 'walking simulator'.

(Also an 8 for Rocket League from Edge would be a 10 in many other publication's scales)

I honestly expected a 10 for MGSV but a 9 from Edge is still absolutely fantastic.

Exactly how I feel. But Edge really weigh gameplay and whole-experience evenly.

Personally, I'd forgive minor niggles like pacing/mission structure if the experience is overwhelmingly good, and give it a 10. But Edge aren't like that. If something niggles them, they will subtract a point. Even if it's a minor niggle.

Evidently same goes for TPP. It's nearly perfect.

Zero use of the medium? It's telling a story through a way that couldn't be done in another medium since you're exploring for the most part, so I think you're being just a bit ridiculous.

Looking forward to picking up Until Dawn with all the buzz it's getting. In fact, I've been wanting for it to be good for so long now that I want to play it more than MGSV at this point.

You are exploring, but it is very much down a set path. There is no rooting in corners to find information. Almost all the info you learn about characters is based on their own words, or the words on others. All the locations in the game feel sterile. People's houses do not feel lived in. Items in the game feel like props not possessions. Everything feels placed, not owned.

I cannot begin to care about these people if they do not feel realistic, and the game make no effort to make these people seem real. The game is well acted, which is why I mentioned the radio play. Based solely on their voices I could care about them, as they sound like they have a good story to tell, but everything about the "game" part that surrounds it lacks an air of realism which ruined everything for me.

BatDan

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
22 pages on a Destiny expansion pack? Jeeez.
Holy shit at Devil's Third score.

I'm still excited for Star Fox. It's Nintendo + Platinum.

To each their own, but I can't agree with the bolded.

I spent a lot of time in Rapture hunting around distant corners of fields, barns and houses looking for radios. Literally 'rooting in corners to find information'. And usually I'd find one and it would be really satisfying and would reveal important plot/character elements. There is a lot of optional dialogue/content you can miss if you don't explore. I thought it did a great job of being a walking simulator with a strain of proper-game DNA. Also a lot of the areas open up and are very expansive, even if you always end up back in a funnel to proceed to the next point.

Starlight Reign? Is that supposed to be Satellite Reign? A 5 seems low from what I've played but whatever.

5 on Edge's scale means 'average'. Not bad. Not good. You can have quite a bit of fun with it, but it has a few big problems. If it's very derivative/not original that will hamper its score, too.

I have a subscription to Edge so I'm familiar with their scoring system.

I've played Satellite Reign and it's absolutely not an average kind of game. They're entitled to their opinion, of course.

Excellent The Phantom Pain score!

Scalebound - "The game channels Kamiya's work on Okami as much as it does Bayonetta."

God...

Cool, all good.

It's a real pity when that happens, especially if it might prevent a lot of people trying a game they'd otherwise enjoy. Similarly I disagreed with the vast majority of Dying Light reviews. Didn't seem to hamper sales/audience appreciation, luckily.

I don't understand how they can give EGTR a 9 but at the same time "only" a 7 for UD.

Doesn't "understand" how two reviewed games can get different scores because reviews are opinions...

Both are going for a story-driven experience, but imo UD is doing it a lot better and also with more options than EGTR.

...then uses "imo" when describing the differences between the two games.

Good work.

If you're going to end with "but whatever" then don't bother starting the sentence.

Seriously, people bitching about review scores...I've never understood it. "I WANT YOU ALL TO THINK THE SAME AS ME BUT YOU DON'T" - Just enjoy what you play and let that be the end of it.

I was expecting Edge to destroy Until Dawn for some reason, so a 7 is above my expectations of what they were going to give it.

In terms of mechanics, Destiny might actually be the best FPS in the universe. It's everything else in the game around it that makes it fall apart.

But really the best news to come out of that mag is about Rainbow Six- "gets the series back on track." That's what I like to hear.

whats a 9 or 10 from edge equivalent to in other publications?

10/10, minimum.

If you compared it with IGN, it would (very approximately) go something like this:

Edge - 10/10 = IGN - 10/10
Edge - 9/10 = IGN - 10/10
Edge - 8/10 = IGN - 9.5/10
Edge - 7/10 = IGN - 9/10
Edge - 6/10 = IGN - 8/10
Edge - 5/10 = IGN - 7/10
Edge 4/10 = IGN - 6/10
Edge 3/10 = IGN - 4/10
Edge 2/10 = IGN 3/10
Edge 1/10 = IGN 1-2/10

I'm mainly talking out of my arse here, obviously – every game is unique and every reviewer is unique. But this is a way of looking at it to more clearly delineate the scoring differences.

Edit: well fancy that. Edge gave Devil's Third 3/10 and IGN gave it 4/10. My scale comparison stands up to the heat, bitches!

I agree with the cover.

The Taken King is the next big release so they need to talk about it.

It's also the one that will drive the most magazine sales.

Has any one posted details from the Destiny cover story? Is there anything new in there or is it just a rehash of the Game Informer expose?

EGttR is an utter snooze. Approach it with extreme caution, and brace yourself for the possibility that you will be disappointed.

It's like porn for older British people though, as it is a stunningly accurate representation of an early 80's English village. EDGE are huge cheerleaders for UK developers as well, so it's not a surprise that they would sincerely give the game high marks.
