Edge #390 Reviews (Starfield, Cocoon, Phantom Liberty, Mortal Kombat)

GigaBowser

The bear of bad news
Starfield - 6
In spite of these shortcomings, Starfield exerts a curious gravitational pull: there is a pleasant mindlessness to it that means it can easily become a black hole for your free time. But if it's not a bad game, it's an achingly unambitious one, failing in what should be one of the foundational aspects of any space exploration game (see Post Script). True, we've come a long way in six decades. But zoom in on the recent history of games – and that of its maker – and you're forced to concede that we've not covered much distance after all. For Bethesda, this isn't so much a giant leap as barely a small step.
Cocoon - 9
As the closing act arrives, it's hard not to wonder if Carlsen has another 11th-hour pivot in store. After a fashion, he does – but rather than a cathartic twist, it's more a cunning reconfiguration. Here, Cocoon breaks its own carefully established rules in a way that doesn't so much smack you in the face as lead to a realisation of its giddying implications, before you're afforded the opportunity to harness some of that potential. Not all, however: there are possibilities left unexplored, albeit for reasons that seem ever more apparent the longer you consider them. It leaves you instead with a reward of a different kind, courtesy of a playful tribute to an unlikely cinematic inspiration – one last delightful surprise beyond its final door.
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty - 8
Yet caught in the thick of Phantom Liberty's spygame intrigue, it's easy to see all that as the rest of the game's problem. Few focused action-adventure games spin a yarn as well as CD Projekt does here, likely keeping you uncertain about your choices to the end. That the adventure is hosted within the richly detailed Night City can be treated as a mere fascinating detail, if that's how you want to play it.
Lies of P - 7
For all its wondrous mimicry, Lies Of P can't quite match the master's ambition. A remarkable feat of craftsmanship and engineering it may be, but never quite a real boy. Yet in a post-Elden Ring world, it serves up a back-to-basics From game of a kind the company itself may never make again, triggering many of the same emotional responses as Dark Souls and Bloodborne did. Rather than being a forgery, it recognises that everything we love about those games is still worth reconstructing. In its desire to deliver exactly that and no more, Lies Of P is nothing if not honest.
The Crew: Motorfest - 6
In spite of all this, we find ourselves warming to Motorfest, its enthusiasm and generosity wearing down our defences. The scenery is sensational at any time of day or night, though plenty of events are set at dawn or dusk for good reason. And between the blistering pace of its Lamborghini- and Porsche-themed events and the boisterous quad-bike races, Ivory Tower's bet on versatility trumping derivativeness pays off. If The Crew's ultimate fate is to be a kind of racing game variety pack, the role seems to suit it.
Mortal Kombat 1 - 7
As a series well into its fourth decade, then, Mortal Kombat appears in surprisingly good shape. If its Fatalities have never felt so gruesomely satisfying, though, the greatest pleasures are still limited to those willing to play through the pain. But between the extra sparks of mechanical invention and visual humour, Mortal Kombat 1 offers perhaps NetherRealm's most persuasive argument yet to take the plunge.
Chants of Sennaar - 9
All of this pays off handsomely in an endgame that subtly transforms certain areas, letting you move more freely through the floors as your linguistic expertise turns you into the tower's unofficial translator. It brings to mind Wittgenstein's assertion that "the limits of my language mean the limits of my world", your mastery of these languages a testament to how boundaries can be expanded through immersion in other cultures. As its climactic moments form ties between the secular and the religious, allowing peoples of science and faith to find common ground, its underlying message sounds out loud and clear. Its thesis – that a multiplicity of cultures leaves a society profoundly enriched – has never seemed more urgent and vital.
Gunbrella - 7
Combat perhaps doesn't develop quite enough, however, something exemplified by a protracted bore of a factory sequence that limits evasive manoeuvres. And though the bosses are wonderfully unpleasant in their design, they're rather less engaging to fight: a couple are straightforwardly cheesed. Yet the story picks up the slack, and though its goofier elements lead to one or two severe tonal lurches, it delivers a string of genuinely startling moments. By the final reckoning, we're invested in how it all shakes out; perhaps the biggest surprise of all is that the titular weapon is 7 not, in fact, Gunbrella's most powerful asset.
Sea of Stars - 7
That exquisitely fashioned world – rendered in a style that evokes the 16bit era while pushing the level of detail beyond what would have been possible then – is a joy to explore, offering a mixture of puzzles and wayfinding that consistently engages without resorting to roadblocks. Beyond its more involving traversal mechanics, Sea Of Stars honours its heritage through a variety of vividly imagined JRPG staples, while taking the occasional modern liberty. Certainly, few JRPG towns we visited back in the day bustled with chatty NPCs quite like this – though it's a pity that attention to detail doesn't quite carry over into its more formulaic, at times rigid approach to characterisation and combat. A fine effort, then, but a new Chrono Trigger it is not – and directly inviting such a comparison only highlights the areas in which it falls short.
Mediterranea Inferno - 8
But that fruit has a bitter aftertaste. This is at times a biliously angry game, its central trio furious at their lost youth and the societal failures that have left them cynical about their future. But as summer ends, its melancholic undertow surfaces; Redaelli's script captures how a lost friendship can be as wounding as the death of a loved one. In reckoning so candidly with the conflicting emotions we've experienced over the past few years, Mediterranea Inferno achieves a purgative potency few of its peers can match.
Eternights - 5
Eternights suffers most from a lack of character: for all it borrows from Persona, Studio Sai has evidently not taken lessons from Atlus's artists for its drab menus and loading screens. Your companions, including highly strung track runner Min and eccentric science researcher Sia, are pleasant enough, with their penchant for exaggerated anime expressions, but your interactions with them are undercut by dialogue options that come across as more creepy than flirtatious. Their paper-thin character arcs, meanwhile, discourage you from spending time with them for anything more than their utility: you'll see them merely as ways of boosting your offensive or defensive stats rather than as individuals. And the nondescript metropolis you inhabit – which, outside of its indistinct dungeons, limits you to a train carriage that serves as a base and a few scavenging locations revisited ad nauseam – is so lifeless you wonder whether it's worth saving. As datingcentred RPGs go, we know a spot, and it's not here.
Finity - 8
It's not, in other words, a relaxing, casual play: the polarising early response suggests it has broken the will of those accustomed to the more colourful task of crushing candy. Meet Finity on its own terms, however, and there is much to admire. Masterful use of haptics and audio ensures that when your finger, so often an unstoppable force, meets an immovable object, you hear and feel it. To play is to experience the pleasure of successfully picking a lock, or cracking a safe, or perhaps even repairing a watch: there is a constant sense of tension and release, as you find ways to free those gummed-up gears, to oil that rusted sliding-bolt mechanism, to feel the click of that tumbler dropping into place. When you do, there is no need for celebratory pyrotechnics: the satisfaction felt in 8 thumbs and brain is congratulations enough.

The reviews seem completely worthless against their purpose IMO.

There's nothing helpful about a tough 6/10 review from Edge that they deem to be unambitious after the game is already destined to leave the UK boxed sales chart it was supposed to inform UK buyers.

It is just captain hindsight reviewing, which if reviewing their reviews is like a 1/10. Compared to a review swept up in the hype and giving it too high a praise, the launch window review at least has text that might help inform the buyer against their own criteria.

yes my friends its all true they do tough scores which makes TOTKS 10 so armazing
It is a great game, but it isn't a 10. They've had two goes at the exact same game to get it right, and as much as I loved my recent +200hrs in the game, with still much to do, like Big fairy stuff, so my friend that isn't near the finish tells me, it isn't even in my top three mainline Zeldas. (Skyward Sword, Wind Waker and Ocarina) despite its greatness and not just because it is weak in the OST department like BotW.

I agree with a 6/10 for Starfield. I think some parts of it are better than a 6 like the boots-on-the-ground combat is pretty fun and the ship combat is fun (I'd give those aspects of the game a 7/10 perhaps) but other parts of it like the characters/dialogue and story are very mediocre and drag the whole package down. The quests are hit and miss - some are alright and some are boring and tedious but none of them have really stood out to me. And the exploration is often not enjoyable with all the loading screens, lack of interesting large, interconnected locations etc.

So 6/10 is where I would sit as well.

You’ll have to make do with Bayonetta and Sekiro.
It doesn't make sense devils may cry was a mario 64 moment for 3d action games. Same goes for gran turismo when it comes to sim racers on console. Ninja Gaiden black perfected the genre but oh well I already know they don't align with my tastes

Zero copy paste location seen

There must be some you will run into if you play in a specific way.

But if you have exhausted said locations, you have option to do other stuff. And there is way too much stuff to do.

"just don't play it like that and you won't see that they copy-pasted a handful of locations across hundreds of planets".

So much for unlimited freedom.

But, like with much of what you say with regards to this game, that's a lie too considering the fact that they copy-paste locations across various main story and side quest lines.

And it even extends to the space battles:

This is basically looking at caves and catacombs in Elden Ring and call it unambitious cause they look similar.

Already found Edge review bizarre to call it unambitious. And you are sharing more reviews which come up with more weird stuff.

Great!!!

Maybe Bethesda shouldn't have been prissy and given all outlets copies to review then.

You brought Ubisoft into this discussion, not me, not Edge (edge are not even referencing this aspect specifically when calling it unambitious). If you're going to bring up Ubisoft then you might want to make sure the game your referencing doesn't share any design choices that are typical of modern Ubisoft titles.

Talking about things and features that are in the game is "weird stuff" now? That's a new one.

If you value their opinion you can wait to hear it. No one is forcing you to buy a game on day 1.
But why would I value a professional opinion that has waited to see where the chips fall, rather than make a pre-release opinion unaffected by meta/open critic, or absent of gaf opinion?

For anyone trying to save money, they'd just assume the Edge review is a game below 8, subtract 2 or more, for game at 8 or more maybe add 2 or less, because their magazine is expensive. Their target audience is really for the core enthusiast gamers like us that pay whatever, whenever, the very people that need a review opinion before the game releases and FOMO drives them to an incorrect purchase.

Edge just posted their top 100 games of all time and TOTk is # 20. # 1 is botw and # 2 dark souls. I can't believe gran turismo didn't make the list just shows how out of touch with reality they are.
I don't understand what people see in BOTW. It's so barren, the world is made huge to inflate game time. Dialogues are unvoiced. Story is cheesy. Broken weapons is an awful mechanic. Monsters are uninteresting, and the combat is meaningless. Dungeons are there to have something in the world. I couldn't make myself play it. I just don't understand that praise. Sure, you can climb everything but what's the purpose of everything else is worthless?

I enjoyed Link's Awakening a lot more.
I bought TOTK as I read it's on the same map but a better game so we'll see. But imagine any other game having literally the same map and getting such a praise?

Starfield - 6

Quote: "In spite of these shortcomings, Starfield exerts a curious gravitational pull: there is a pleasant mindlessness to it that means it can easily become a black hole for your free time. For Bethesda, this isn't so much a giant leap as barely a small step."

That sums up Starfield perfectly and is pretty much how I see the game. It's fun, I mean I've been playing it for 125 hours so I'd be lying if I said otherwise, but it is depressingly lacking in innovation and plays exactly like BGS's previous games, just set in space, a setting that really does not suit their engine at all due to the requirement to basically fast travel everywhere, which ruins the sense of exploration and immersion.

Starfield will be in my Top 20 Games of 2023 on hours played alone but, as I've said before, it will also be top of my Most Disappointing Game of 2023 too.

After over 100 hours of play I'm feeling like Starfield settles into a cumulative high 8 for me. There are undoubtedly problems with it, which I'll go into after I've finished it. But when it shines it really shines. And I'm still adding hours every day.

There sure are some damn good games on that list. Edge's scores are famously meaningless (unless you just so happen to agree with them of course), but they do know a good game when they see it.

Firmly agree with Starfield being a 6, but only in a world where review scores mean something. A 6 should be "fine" and that's precisely what Starfield is. Going by 95% of outlet scores it's an 8.

Well, they played BG3 first...I was expecting 7/10 for Starfield cause they gave 6/10 for a broken ass game like Redfall.

6 for Starfield? Thought they would give it a 4 or something due to the
”late” review copy. 🫠

Took a look at those 8/10 and 9/10 indie games I have never heard of and I need a quick shower. I guess I prefer 6/10 stuff.

Imagine I was subscribed to this magazine for years.

I put in about 20+ hours and was bored to tears. Really seemed more of the same and just not engaging at all. Very surprised about all of the 10/10's

I love Edge, they give real scores to game not paid ones.
Sorry to burst your bubble but no modern day review that utilises scoring is "real" to the standard of giving true opinion. Any mainstream review outlet is still defined by the publisher, because they are the ones providing the copy for free and so an incentive to at least do "well" is expected or else you get punished for it. Edge giving Starfield a 6 or Cyberpunk an 8 is just bog standard journalism of today going by the numbers of everyone else to ensure relative sedated outcomes.

I mean, Finity, a candy crush match-three game scored an 8 with a blurb that is boiled down to "we have haptics and do matching slightly differently thanks to pretty pictures or different "match" scenarios."

In no way is The Crew Motorfest a 6, one of the best open world racers in quite some time. 7 at the very worst!
