EDGE: Sony’s VR tech will be revealed at GDC

Making those 3d sculptures with Move controller in MM's next UGC game will be so much fun. I have really high hopes for this.

I got a one line email back tonight re your GIF:

That…..was amazing.

If there is a new thread tomorrow that GIF better be in the OP.

Has there been a source other than EDGE on this?

I worry that the list of names at the conference doesn't match up with the previous rumours. Neither of the people listed as inventors on the patent are there, for example: http://uk.ign.com/articles/2013/11/07/ps4-vr-headset-possible-patents-spotted

I wonder if it might be shown to key figures behind closed doors at GDC and get a public unveiling later. We've heard rumours of it supporting Driveclub, but none of the Evo/DC team are listed as being at the conference.

Not trying to rain on parades, just suggesting we keep expectations in check. The two guys at this conference were the key brains behind Move and EyeToy so it could be something related to those.
Richard Marks is the head of all SCE R&D. Meaning everything that gets R'd & D'd is under his supervision. That means quite a bit more than eye toys. And Anton is the senior software engineer, which would probably mean that he's had a hand in whatever tech demo they may show.

Not saying that it automatically means anything but these are SCE's big wigs in the engineering section, not just advocators for PS MOVE.

So games would have to be 720p , right ? I want to believe this will be huge , but VR has so many hurdles to overcome.

No, it would all be down to how much each game needed resource wise to run in vr mode. Some could be 1080, more demanding ones 720. But it seems devs have been playing around with other ways of doing things, re killzone mp. so its really hard to do anything other then guess, unless your involved with It, or have knowledge of it being real, of course like some lucky insiders seem to be!

Yea it has hurdles but look how far we have come since the days of the c64, hell even ps3 launch to ps4 launch shows a significant leap.

What excites me the most with a possible VR device is to see what Media Molecule is working on. A play-create-share title for VR would be such a perfect fit and a killer app for me. I just can't imagine MM developing a non-VR game if PSVR is a thing.

It makes perfect sense too, as MM has a history of experimenting with new Playstation hardware in different ways (Move for LBP2, Vita functions in Tearaway).

I am just wondering how come we got footage from GDC when LBP was unveiled. Was it the different type of conference. Was that one streamed / opened for filming?

I'm not sure about you, but the Virtuix Omni looked pretty cool when they showed it off.

I want to see an old Socom or at least Socom Confrontation being played with the Omni.
I would die of laughter at a strafe battle.

To tell the truth this setup would work much better on a no respawn game like Socom over COD.

It was not livestreamed. It was filmed and either the whole lot or parts were released afterwards.

Of course this was in 2007 which was really before livestreaming was typical.

It would be kind of funny if Alex Evans and Mark Healey presented something again in this context though... :)

A perhaps optimistic read on the situation is that Sony PR has asked for this strict prohibition on filming but will be filming themselves. And then how much is released afterward will depend on whether there's any technical hiccups to be edited out.

Good post, fully agree. A PSVR MM game where we can create objects/worlds, import and export creations to and from other PS4s... that possibility ignites such excitement in me I can barely stand it. It is my dream game and I hope it's happening!

Funny enough The KZ Shadowfall MP seems to render 960x1080 in some way. Now this is VERY close to the sugested 1kx1k displays per eye! And I certainly would not complain about the graphic fidelity of KZ:SF MP in VR (now that is a lot of two letter abraviations ;))

I know the framerate is not quite there but with a little optimization....
No, that's half of the target resolution assuming 960x1080x2, and it's not accounting for stereo overhead, typically between 30 and 50%, and assuming 60fps, they may target higher.

Good point. Wonder if GG next game will be VR compatible? Imagine having a dog fight in space using VR (sorta like Rogue Squadron) I just hope Sony make VR as easy to implement as remote play. Would sure help shift a lot of units!

Yes you are correct. As edited I was confused. My original idea was that a similar rendering technique could be applied for the VR rendering. But of course then the graphics have to be a step down.

Another theory: It wont be VR, it will be a thing that you you put on your ears like a small headset with mini move balls attached and allows the camera to track head movement, giving the viewer the optical illusion that every screen is a possible 3d screen, like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw

combine this with the short throw projector and every wall could be a window into a 3d world.

edit:
Is it on livestream on GDC site?
fucking read, seriously, its been posted on this page alone a million times.
no livestream, only liveblog by sites like ign, kotaku etc.

You mean like something similar to the Glyph

I only hope this won't be a failure of a peripheral like the Move was.

I guess they thought a little about it since it's being (hopefully) revealed so early from the launch.

If more games support it from scratch, more people are going to buy it. Me included.

So Sony VR being shown off then a session with Yu Suzuki and Mark Cerny? :D

Shenmue 3 confirmed! Need dat exclusive software push :p

I'm not even a big fan of Shenmue, but I would definitely buy such a game. The biggest appeal of the games was visiting places and looking around you, observing NPCs etc. , to the point of having a whole chapter dedicated to walking in the woods with Shenhua. :)

If sony pulls this off in 14 hours i'm buying a PS4 tomorrow, it's too late for me, i'm already hyped. The prospect of a media molecule game with VR just blows my mind.

I just dont get it.

Kinect? gimmick.
Gamepad? gimmick.
Move? Gimmick.

But VR is somehow going to be a game changer?

At best this going to be cute distraction thats supported by a handful of games. The mainstream simply is never going to strap a box to their face to game.

This whole VR hype is the strangest thing ever to me. Its one of those things everyone seems to be gushing over online but in the real world people are meh...

I only hope the money wasted on this at least ensures somewhat of a return. Id hate for first party development to suffer to support this.
