EDGE: What Microsoft’s always-on Xbox means for PlayStation 4

Do not go this route, Sony. I just hope all this is made-up BS but something tells me there might be more to it.

I'm going to put in a request that a bank/investor asks Sony in the investor Q&A if any future products in the game division are expected to leverage this kind of technology. Let's see if anyone has the balls to ask.

You would think it would be asked anyway.

I'm talking specifically about the PS4. Seems like Sony is doing everything right and MS is doing everything wrong. But I'm just speculating. I can't speculate?

This is definitely not true. Especially in the past months the Orbis rumors were not so positive, especially thanks to comments by Aegis and proelite. Statements such as more confidence in MS, more excited about the Durango were thrown around and people were worried what it could mean for Orbis going forward.

I think it just seems that Durango is getting all the negative news is because it's only now that we are hearing more about it. The whole hyping up about the wizard jizz didn't do it any favors either.

I sincerely hope that this rumor, just like the speculation surrounding that sony patent, will turn out to be false. It's the best outcome for all gamers

Almost all the new 360 games, and games period, I've bought have been a result of trading in or selling old games I did not want anymore. This will kill overall game sales for most of the casual and even hardcore market.

Whoever is anti consumer can go to hell and I will not support them based on principle and finances. If its both I hope this goes to the Supreme Court.

So anti-second hand also means anti-loaning out games to family and friends too, eh? I'm interested in seeing how this rumor plays out, and how it's going to be regulated.

It makes no sense to me that I cannot buy Halo Anniversary and download it to the 360. I can get more and better full games on my PS3 via PSN.

I have not sold any of my games in a while, you just don't get enough from a place like Gamestop to make it worth while. And Gamestop sells used games for too much money for what they give in return. So because of this, I don't even want to buy used discs anymore.

All that said, I don't buy digital at the same price I bought physical media, so unless MS and Sony start offering digital titles cheaper than they do now at release, most of my purchases will remain on the PC or Tablet. I know digital prices will eventually go up as all things do, but when a game comes out digitally at the same price it does on physical medium, I will buy physical or wait till the game is discounted.

IMO, Android, iOS and Steam games have taken off is because they are cheap.

You actually made a statement outlining current events. It contained no speculation O_o

Family members can no longer share games in a single household. Sounds pretty shit to me.

One of the biggest issues people need to realize about restricting used games is that used games drive down the price of video game titles. If only new titles can be bought and sold, the publisher has the opportunity to keep prices up.

It won't even have to go to the Supreme Court. If it's truly anti consumer then consumers will vote with their wallets and the idea will fail. Good thing we have competition in the market place.

I've been thinking about this more today, and I have to say I really don't see an issue with always on.

This is 2013. Broadband is prolific, and affordable. There are plenty of packages offering high bandwidth with zero throttling, and zero download caps. I've had 24 meg adsl for without capping or throttling for several years now for approx £25 a month. How much I download is a thing of the past, thankfully due to my Steam games and streaming media.

If you are on a throttled or capped plan then shop around. Under UK law ISP must supply your MAC code within 5 working days so swapping supplier is very easy. Can't be that much more difficult in the US or Europe.

People might say "But what about the kids?" Well, surely their if parents can afford to buy a new xbox then you can assume they have wireless broadband.

Personally I think people should have an issue with this. If true, Microsoft is essentially taking freedom away from the consumers and giving more control to the publishers/developers. We've already seen how terrible always online DRM has been in the PC space, and it will be just as bad on consoles. They're essentially punishing people for buying used games and people who buy things legitimately, since always online is something that is also meant to abolish piracy.

More than that, businesses like Gamestop make most of their money off of used game sales. It's not just them either, there are a lot of smaller stores that also make their money this way. You could argue that the market is following this trend already with digital gaming, but this isn't so much the retail market slowly being phased out by something better as it is Microsoft actively ending the market with draconian bullshit.

But this is based on speculation at this point though, and it may turn out to be untrue (hopefully).

I applaud Microsoft for doing this if true. Steam and Apple have been doing it for years. I'm assuming, that once the game is installed, no disc would be required. So awesome if true. I hope Sony follows suit.

Oh that Kotaku thread. That's why I ignored it. Since Kotaku usually post bullshit.

But yeah. There's your first negative Sony. Good job.

Sony is still "winning" so far on good will going by the latest rumors.

dude....Sony has been in the shit for the last couple of years and even though they sold 70 million PS3s it's still all doom and gloom for them so it's about time they receive some good press.

All I do is speculate in every thread concerning next gen.

Nothing is official from Sony until the 20th.

Nothing is official from MS until they reveal the damn thing.

That's some good doom and gloom for selling 70 million consoles...

If digital prices go up you will see a return to rampant piracy.

But what happens if both Sony and MS go the anti consumer route?

I love my 3DS so far but I don't see myself going with a Wii U till at least Zelda. Hopefully this causes Nintendo to step up their game if both Sony and MS decide to fuck consumers over.

Yeah... would never happen. They would be dumping half there sales down the drain if they did that.

They might try it but the goodwill from the public that Sony would gain from going against the anti used games movement would help Sony take a huge lead over Durango which would force the Western AAA publishers to come running back to Sony if they actually want to make money. Plus Sony could probably hold out long enough for that to happen relying upon their first party lineup and Japanese and European 3rd parties.

Anyone think 3rd parties would attempt to blackball/coerce Sony on this? As in, "you don't lock used games, you don't get COD/FarCry/AC/etc..."

Edit: Looks like someone already asked this.

LMFAO! Holy Shit bro - reread what I quoted you on!

I just find it amazing that we've heard nothing negative from Sony's new console.

You're not speculating - you're making a statement, fml.

It depends on how hard publishers support them. If nextbox gets all of the games 3 months or so ahead of everyone else then I hate to say it but most people will bite the bullet.

You learn something every day.

Investors like pension funds don't know about this kind of stuff and analysts don't tend to go because we have enough back channel contacts to get the answers we need. Something like this needs to be addressed publicly however, so I put the request in. I don't think anything will come of it though.

Wow this thread moved fast.

Publishers would never leave free money on the table like that, an easy port job between these two systems for little cost they wouldnt with hold software as they would take a kicking from investors wondering why they are limiting there returns.
I'm not saying fully exclusive games. Neither Sony or Microsoft is going to pay to get a GTA or COD exclusive because the hundreds of millions in lost sales they'd have to make up for would never come back their way in any quantifiable manner. But timed exclusive content? That already happens for what we presume to be mere cash (or a possibly a break on royalties). I think third parties would definitely go along with helping to push a system that limited second hand sales.

I imagine a lot of companies are expecting a similar split in market share (in favor of whom is yet to be determined) unless they've heard about somebody pulling a bonehead "$599" move again. The big third party games will be on both platforms, but I wonder if a system that furthers their objectives in getting people to buy new copies of games will get the better post-release support.

I love how you spent all that money and you're ready to drop it all on a rumor I love this website. :D lol

maybe stop bashing people for having their opinions? if they dont feel comfortable with it, its their deal, you should not defend ms or this practice wether the rumor is true or not.

MS gains nothing, publishers gain everything.
MS is a publisher too.

This might just be the price MS is asked to pay to retain the kind of advantage they gained with publishers over the past gen. Now that Sony seems to be clawing back some good will by all accounts and doesn't seem likely to give MS the same kind of massive head start they gave them last time around all this may really be more about what they stand to lose...

I'm not really sure that guarantees a response from Sony, seeing as how they mostly let the same kind of thing happen this past gen.

You see the thing is, by limiting DLC on the platform that is friendly to second hand sales publishers only damage their own income. To make up for lost income in game sales, they need to push more content to second hand buyers, DLC is a nice income stream for them and giving timed exclusives to the platform that doesn't have second hand owners is just going to hurt them in the long term.

There is no device on the planet that requires always online. A phone, a tablet, a computer, etc still let's you use various things you downloaded already without internet.

MS is literally making their console worthless if you lose your internet. I cannot believe there are people on the planet defending this and think this isn't a move reeking of ego and stupidity.

The thing is Xbox 360 is already a dust collector if you aren't Gold, so I'm betting Microsoft thought 'let's take the next step'.

SONY: This is a major opportunity, the right thing to do is VERY obvious. Don't think with your bank account. Think of improving your reputation.

MICROSOFT: What is wrong with you???
