EDGE: What Microsoft’s always-on Xbox means for PlayStation 4

So Gamestop will become Nintendostop.

Ok.

I personally think no-used is the right way to go, but a complete revamp of the current-gen pricing structure will have to happen. I'm willing to bet Microsoft has a plan to refocus value into exclusive content and a larger pricing range (from $10 games to $100 games). IF this is true.

In the mean time, it has become clear that Nintendo is banking on retail to remain relevant throughout this generation. While I think they are correct, it will be fun to see how this develops. Nintendo's reliance on the past may end up paying off for them. We will see.

Investors like pension funds don't know about this kind of stuff and analysts don't tend to go because we have enough back channel contacts to get the answers we need. Something like this needs to be addressed publicly however, so I put the request in. I don't think anything will come of it though.

Surely a journalist would raise the point - I know I would. In any case it does need to be asked because it would be a major change for the console industry that will have ramifications to the bottom line.

I speculated that we didn't hear anything bad from Sony's camp. I was later corrected.

Okay?

No - you made a statement at how you were amazed:
I just find it amazing that we've heard nothing negative from Sony's new console.

... and I asked you a question which you stumbled trying to avoid by calling your statement a "speculation". You don't know how this game works do you? It's called a discussion. You talk to people. Converse back and forth. This isn't one-sided. You don't get to make statements, then try to change the meaning after the fact, then do your best not to participate. You don't want to answer the question, that's cool. Then ignore the question but don't try to spin statements you make, SMH. Uncool.

I'll be blunt: After PSP/PS3/Vita - what do you have against Sony? Why do you want them to fail so badly that you think a bit of good news on a console launch since the past 3 SUCKED is enough to "amaze"... is 3 not good enough?

I'm genuinely curious what you have to gain by being so "amazed" at how Sony has some good news.

Damn dude. Give it a rest.

And for the record, I have nothing against Sony. I currently own a PS2 & PS3. Don't have a VITA anymore.

and the fact that you used one of Reiko's posts to potentially prove this rumor legit makes it even more delicious. lol

You better hope that part of the rumor is not true.

What if Microsoft purposefully leaked these rumors to gauge public reception before making an official decision?

Doubtful because what type of reaction would you expect the public to have...thereis nothing in this announcement that is good for the owner of the console.

No - I like calling people out. It shows their character when they can't engage in discussion but would rather try to spin what they said, themselves, than enter into a debate.

This is a forum. This is what people are here for. If you don't want to enter into a discussion - then don't post. Simple, I know.

Again, if you don't want to get called out bro - you're better off not posting at all.

Whatever you say bro. You're just wasting your time. I can post whenever I want to. I didn't sign up on GAF to please you.

But if you think "You're calling me out"... Have fun. I really don't care anymore.

It is looking more likely that I will buy a PS4 before a 720. Take apart that post too if you like.

Let me sweeten it for you.

WATCHU GON' DO 'BOUT IT

I just find it amazing that we've heard nothing negative from Sony's new console.

I find it amazing that anyone has any faith in Sony to do something right(outside of the usual SDF members). Ever. I certainly don't. They have the most to prove to me. Not just with video game consoles, but TVs, music products etc as well. It's not often you see a company with such diverse properties faceplant in nearly every single one of them at the same time.

A few of my friends are saying this as well. Has there been any positive leak about the next Xbox? It's been very odd to say the least.

Outside of Xbox fans and leakers that appear to want the Durango to be great, nope. *edit* And that Superdae tweeter.

I really think Sony is turning things around. This might be the year.

Been said so often that it might as well be their company motto.

"buy the PS4 because the other guys wont let you buy used games"

- PS4 software sales tank because everyone got the system for used games.

Excuse me, but I happen to think that level-minded people, whom unfortunately are indeed less populous than I was hoping, would buy the PS4 not because they can buy used games, but because they can do everything involved with actually owning what you buy: borrow, lend, rent, sell, keep and use forever, play on multiple consoles of my own, and yes, buy used.

Buying used is just one part of a much larger issue. Preventing that prevents everything else on that list.

WI can't see Sony doing it, they WILL lose Japan if they do. They will be releasing the most expensive system where you can't have used games. It is an interesting conundrum, do publishers go all in with MS? What about the potential backlash, the retailers shoving 720s into the back of the store? What about European developers or publishers, or those with a significant interest in Europe? Does MS just give up on countries like Germany where this sort of practice is illegal? How do developers like CD Projekt, Crytek and DICE react to not being able to sell in their own backyards if Europe becomes a write-off?

The idea of no used games doesn't phase me, but always internet connected does. I live in Australia and my not so flash internet disconnects sometimes. The idea that if the net drops out I'm booted out of my game is just stupid.

Registering activation codes for games and tying them to one account is inconvenient, but steam already does that and I don't mind. The need to be always online on the other hand is not so nice.

Of course the other issue is Xbox Live Gold. If Microsoft think I need to pay for the privilege of playing online next gen then I'm switching to the PS4. Gold is the biggest rip-off out there.

In the Grand scheme of things, Sony have had a couple of bad years in a long line of great years. Those bad years mainly caused by poor management. They now have new management, and a new more focused "vision", its only fair to give them a chance before concluding they will fuck it up.

Always connected is a disaster waiting to happen. If they implement that, it will be a huge mistake.

Weak spec news
Always online
No used games

It's just about every negative aspect to de-hype Microsoft's new console. This is the kind of mindshare hype that killed the Dreamcast.

A lot of press were actually incredibly excited for Dreamcast....till Sony showed off proper demos of the PS2 that practically blew whatever Sega had shown out of the water. Mostly the Sega faithful and a few others stayed for the promised innovative titles/Sonic and the odd decent title that joe public actually got hyped about (like Power Stone). But most people I knew were firmly in the Playstation camp and opted to wait the extra year for the PS2 instead.

But the press only came to that conclusion at the time because Sega had been on the crazy sauce for 5 years up to this point, blunders with Mega CD, 32X and Saturn meant the press just wasn't going to be that excited about Dreamcast. Even with a "proper" Sonic Title heading up the initial title announcements - which again press would be a bit tentative about thanks to the mess that was Sonic Xtreme

It's a shame because Sega did try to throw everything they had at the system (I recall the impressive demos, the massive press events for Sonic Adventure and other game announcements) - but they had tanted their own brand so much, and then with the silly squabbling over SoA and SoJ's proof of concept systems being bounced about in the press too - they effectively shot themselves in the foot. This isn't what's happening, I'm sure Sony is muddying the waters here - but a large number of the Xbox audience won't even hear this rumor. So I wouldn't go considering this attempt at putting gamers off the system is going to have some kind of Dreamcast height ramifications.

Microsoft have made some silly blunders and slightly iffy decisions (Xbox Live Gold/Silver - Kinect) but nothing that's going to hurt the Xbox brand on the level that Sega inflicted upon itself

...then I buy a PS4 and not the new Xbox.

I will not buy any system that controls my ability to buy and sell physical games as I wish.

Yep. The only reason Steam gets away with what it does is because of ridiculous sale prices. No skin off my back if I can't resell something I got for $5. OTOH, if I pay $60 for some game on PS4 and it's total shite, I want to be able to sell it. If this is all true, and Sony allows second hand market to continue, that's where I'll go.

No you didn't sign up to GAF to please me. Apparently, you signed up to GAF to post, then when someone quotes you and asks a question, you whine about it. So you're here to post, instead of engage in conversation ;)

Fair enough, actually. Some people like doing that. Protip: if you do not want to engage in conversation, DO NOT RESPOND, and if you do respond - don't twist your own words XD

I was genuinely curious to my initial question you kept dodging and whining about tho as to how people perceive both MS and Sony - I don't have a stake in either and I could easily... EASILY see why people would hate on Sony and MS... I've just never been here on GAF for a console launch... so I like hearing why people hold their opinions because..

maybe... just maybe they will bring up a point I have never thought of or heard of before and help me make up my own mind ;) especially since I can only purchase 1 console out of the gates this time and one at a later date - I'm trying to pick my Day 1 poison.

I'm certainly not the brightest - but the more information I can soak up from others - the smarter I become and the fewer missteps I will make.

It doesn't get that serious. And I'm not whining, half of the time I'm trying to figure out what you are even posting.

The only thing I hated about Sony was the PS2 hype that killed the Dreamcast. But in actuality, Sega killed themselves. And that was a long time ago.

Why would a developer make 1 version of a game you can't resell then allow used games for Sony? What is the incentive for them?
Because the developer still has the potential to make money either way, and they get a sort of A/B test on just how much 2nd hand sales might actually cut into their own sales.

Oh god. The conspiracies and tin-foil hats are coming out.

I know...I crack up that people think EDGE. would run this story based on a source that is some undercover Sony worker trying to smear Microsoft..EDGE ran the story basically twice.....They believe in their source...Yahoo Finance contacted Microsoft and they didnt deny it at all..

Argument from majority, no matter how many people run the story it doesn't increase it's credibility.

They are trying to force hits on their website.

I really...REALLY don't think Edge would be publishing this story if there weren't some truth to it. Implying that they would makes you sound paranoid.

Xbox is extremely tilted towards US/UK/First World, countries that already have a very high level of broadband access. When you correlate households with broadband access to console ownership that percentage will be even higher. I also don't think this is something the average person would be particularly concerned with.

I'm sure they've done the math, slightly less marketshare, but higher profits. Hopefully Sony have done the math and it came out opposite, otherwise I don't like the look of next gen.

Of course, Edge are a highly respected and long running magazine with lots of long term sources. I could post articles from them dating back to pre PS1/Saturn era with correct specs. I doubt they would ruin that reputation that took so many years to build up by posting a BS story just for a few hits on their website. That's tin foil hat territory.

I guess EDGE wasn't happy with the hits they were getting earlier... MUST HAVE MORE HITS!

How dare they follow up a topical story/rumour with an opinion piece!

You do realise this is how the world of media works? Something big gets announced/rumoured and writers typically express a viewpoint towards it separate from the main objective piece, right?

Sony's Jack Tretton "Totally Opposed to Blocking Used Games"

The SCEA president calls blocking used games "anti-consumer."

According to market analyst, Michael Pachter, who recounted a meeting he had with Tretton at E3.

"He said, 'for the record, I'm totally opposed to blocking used games. I think it's great for the consumer that they can buy those. We have a customer that buys our console late in the cycle, pays less, is looking for value priced games, and I think it would be anti-consumer for us to do that'," Pachter told GameTrailers.com

Tretton was responding to rumors that the as-of-yet unannounced successor to the PS3 - which, according to Kotaku, will be called the Orbis - won't support PS3 games and will block the use of used games. Similar claims have been made about whatever console will follow the Xbox 360.

Tretton's support of used games seems somewhat hollow, however, given that Sony is currently pushing the PSN Pass system, which requires second hand game owners to buy codes to use their games online. He did qualify his statements by adding that Japanese Sony executives may not see eye to eye with him on the matter.

Pachter himself was dismissive of the rumors about the PS4. "I think it will play used games," he said. "That is the dumbest rumor I've ever heard."

Judging by Pachter's previous predictions, that means there's a 60% chance the PS4 will block used games. Oh dear

Will gamers still be able to rent games from gamefly/blockbuster/red box?

You know at first I thought there's noway but as I think about it more perhaps they will do like Netflix and get rental only discs with features cut out.. maybe no multiplayer or something. Who knows.

If there is an expanded next gen XBL store front, like Origin/Steam, I doubt very seriously we will see the kind of discounts that Steam offers.
