Can you load the amazon app store on this?
Yep there is info in the email they send you. You just need to toggle a setting so you can sideload non-market apps.

i have the Amazon and TegraZone markets on it (though the latter may be just a regular app, i never checked if the content was in the normal market). I wonder when the PlayStation Suite will be available :-)

Why do you say that? So far i think it suites more use-cases
I'm sorta in the 4:3 camp too. It's one of the thngs that sort has annoyed me about Android tablets so far. It just feels more balanced to me no matter which orientation you use compared to 16:9.

Feels a bit odd to hold in landscape, suppose ill have to give it a day or two.

On the plus side the tablet overall is smaller than I imagined.

Yeah i suppose the balance would be better, but I dig the aspect ratio for videos, books, and comics. GAF might be better with 4:3 though

I was dead set on a 4:3 tablet regardless of OS, but I think the pros of the Transformer have sorta pushed me on giving that aspect up. I just need to know what is in iOS5 first and have to wait for Best Buy to stock the 32 gig version since I have a stack of gift cards just sitting here.

I'm excited the Transformer is going to be a line, and therefore the dock will work with other models. I can see myself staying withAsus for a while. Who knows, maybe they'll offer a 4:3 later.

Marty I'm surprised I haven't seen you in the webOS thread. Seems like you always want to expand outside of Apple's realm. The Touchpad seems like a nice compromise between Google and Apple.

I pop in there every now and then when I see the thread pop up and I love the concept of webOS. I've been a fan since the Pre was first unveiled, but I sorta feel that the way they handled the phone and their announcements sorta stalled them out the gate. I'm very concerned about app development support on the platform because of the whole history of webOS. While Android has been slow to create tablet designed software, I'm still confident that it will come in time. I just don't get that feeling with webOS. I'll still follow but right now it's not a likely candidate despite loving the OS design.

I will say though that the action bar is great and I'm glad they turned it into an API.

Swipe in controls are awesome as well, they should have implemented the system bar in that manner instead of having it fixed 100% of the time.

I'm being given a $200 allowance to buy something work related, and I'm thinking I'll put it toward this. Seems like exactly what I've been looking for. Now if only it could run Terraria...

Hmm, this Dolpin browser looks interesting.
Actually I just uninstalled flash 10.3 and installed the hacked version ... Hulu works on the normal browser even :-)

I wouldn't say it runs great, but that will improve once the Honeycomb 1.3 update hits. Granted part of it may be that the wifi antenna isn't the greatest (just speculating). I need to set up a separate 11n network since I've got some 11g devices going. That might help

Damn it! it ask for 10.3.2 but I the apk file is 10.3.18 :/
It's actually asking for 10.0.32 or greater. That's the default error message when it doesn't like your browser. Take a look at the 4th and 5th pages of the thread I linked. The issue seems to be that restarting the browser hoses it. Hopefully someone will come up with a solution (preferably one that doesn't require rooting).

For now, you need to mess around with reinstalling every time it hoses up. To be honest it really isn't worth bothering until we get honeycomb 3.1 imo. The performance just isn't there without GPU acceleration

Thanks for the response! lol I didn't know this was Transformer thread, I thought it was for smartphone, so that is the reason why it doesn't work.

"Bitches leave" j/k

Btw - I highly recommend getting 'Thumb Keyboard' from the market. It has a 10" inch mode and tons of options. once you get used to it there's no going back. It's damn near perfect.

YES! Couldn't remember the name of that. I'll be snagging this first 10 minutes after I get my transformer.

An update just hit today ... it's even better :-)
How so? What did this update change?

BTW, I have to praise Asus for regularly releasing updates for the device.

Yea, Asus is part of the reason I was willing to jump on. I'm not planning on rooting/CM this device. Asus has always been good about firmware/support. They released W7 drivers for the EEE Netbooks even though those netbooks never shipped with W7.

Received my Transformer today. In short, I returned my Xoom after two weeks, because I felt it was pretty overpriced and the screen was abysmal.

In short, I made the right choice. The Transformer is a definite home run.

Your review, username and tag have convinced me I am making the right choice.

Slowly people begin telling the truth about the Xoom.

In short, I'm glad this is working out for you.

Let me get a full week of use, then I'll happily type up more thoughts. For now, I'm quite happy: it's lighter, has a much better screen, and is $250 cheaper (NY tax made my WiFi Xoom cost 650+); all for the same software experience as the Xoom (on 3.0.1 in any case; I understand 3.1 fixed a lot of the issues on Xoom) -- and in some cases better (included Asus apps and widgets aren't terrible, plus working SD slot without hackery).

My gripes, so far, are the proprietary USB port and mild light bleeding (though, I'm one of the few people that don't mind too much).

Haven't tested everything so far but
  • ton more long press keys (basically every key)
  • new way to handle numbers. You can hold the new number button, type your numbers, and when you let go it will switch back to the normal board. It coaches you through it
  • can use the above to quickly access brackets for forums. The brackets are right above the number button so u just slide up and it switches back to normal right after
  • easy access to some new keyboard layouts
  • several symbols default on the dictionary line for easier access
  • a row of customizable keys you can bind to practically anything
  • a text shortcut button that brings up a drop down with user customizable strings

oh, you're talking about an update to thumb keyboard, I thought you meant for the transformer.

Wow, Best Buy still has them in stock. Must have convinced Asus to ship them a huge allotment. Now if someone would get the keyboard in stock...

Or, they aren't as popular as they seemed to be at first...

Do you have an angle here? They're sold out of every other retailer I can possibly think of, and store pickup isn't an option for the one being sold on Bestbuy.com

Some more truth is that we are already rocking the 3.1 update, and will more than likely continue to see future updates ahead of you Asus peasants.

I wish I had an I PS disnplay :'(

Cool.

It looks like a good device. I've got two laptops - one is older and smaller and mainly used for traveling. The other is newer and bulkier and used almost as a desktop.

The old one is crapping out on me, so I need something portable to replace it. A tablet seems like a good idea, and I've just been debating between the iPad or a Honeycomb device.

Are there going to be 3g or 4g versions of this? How is app selection in comparison to Apple's App store? I don't have much experience with Android, but from an outsiders view, it seems incredibly fragmented, what with a new version coming out seemingly every other month/ Someone cure my ignorance please!

Cheaper, user expandible memory, screen suitable for video.

Native HDMI out, USB ports (can use for external storage like a flash drive or peripherals like a mouse) and extra battery on the dock, no need to ever use iTunes, ability to mount as mass storage, slightly bigger screen, better resolution

Why would you want 3g or 4g on it?

The app selections will improve as more adoption happens.

You are right about new Android OS versions coming out frequently, but that also means that when your device gets the upgrade you get new features and fixes more frequently.

The app selection for Android is quite good, however Android 3.0 and the tablet form factor are another story. Still, there's a lot you can do.
