Target has $40 off the Transformer using code TCA27BAR

Of course, the $40 discount is eaten away by shipping and tax, but ultimately you'll still get a Transformer for sub-$400 total. Looks like it'll ship in 2-4 weeks.

Has anyone here gotten one yet? I'm thinking about ordering one even though my iPad experience has taught me that I don't need a tablet.

Too bad they don't have the 32 gig one on their site. I'm holding out on that.

This release is so weird. It's supposed to be out this week, but nobody has it...
Seems like a shame too. They could have marketed this thing to be pretty huge, but after this sort of launch, who knows if it will ever get exposed to the mainstream.

Has Asus said anything about why this launch is so shitty? Seriously, this is just beyond stupid.

Asus has always had a wonky supply chain and many of their launches might as well be called "soft launches". Their official position for the Transformer is that they did not anticipate how popular it would be, which is dumb considering this was one of the standout products at CES and they've already sold out the Transformer in other countries prior to the US.

Judging from what I've been reading, retailers should have solid supply around May 11-12th. If Asus had announced the release date to be mid-May instead of trickling out a few tablets on April 26th, I doubt many people would bothered by the wait. But that's just the Asus way. If I had to guess, Asus wanted to release their tablet at the same time as the Acer Iconia Tab just to say they did.

Just ordered one from Target with that promo. Hopefully they ship out in under a month. lol

My 6yr old Dell Latitude just died on me, too.

I'm going to be in PA and possibly NY this week, and I'll be looking for one. Have there been reports of these in retail stores yet or is it online-only right now?

  1. What's the best resource for checking which stores have the Eee Pad in stock?
  2. How long will it take for Asus to update the device to 3.1?

Any word on when these will hit retail stores?

You acn find them at local Fry's if you have one close by. Use their online site to check for inventory. I ordered mine from Walmart.com last week. Was suppose to be delivered today but fucking walmart refused delivery because it was after 5 PM....

Just got mine from PC Richards, I love it, a bit lost, but I love it. Just wished some of my 'droid apps would work with this.

*shakes fist*

Actually I just set up some alarms. I would have preferred newegg though (love Amazon, but I get taxed in NYS).

I'm just trying to decide ... 16GB or 32GB. $100 is a lot, but I'm curious what performance impact there would be using an mSD card? If there is a penalty, I'd rather pay the premium.

I really hope Google gets a Picasa App up and running android. I already have a display running on a pc, and I would love to transfer over the data.

I shall have my transformer on friday. oh joy.

wait, they don't?
Not all. It's not a Transformer issue, but a Honeycomb one.

I'm hoping 3.1 fixes most of the issues. Regardless, people are working on updates for individual apps anyway. While it seems like Android tablets have been around forever, Honeycomb is the first dedicated tablet UI. Previous tablets were just the phone OS.

I have one. It is pretty, but I eagerly await Android 3.1 and fixes to the Youtube App...that is all.
You don't get off that easy.

Come on ... post some impressions :D

Thats like saying Windows is like 4 real OSes. Android is a OS. What your talking about are versions.
Yeah really. Actually Android really only has 2 versions anyway, the 2.x branch which is for phones, and the 3.x branch which is currently for tablets.

What's more, even that's going away. Ice Cream Sandwich will combine them into a single OS that will work on phones, tablets, and netbooks.

I was able to get the 16GB, but missed out on grabbing the dock/keyboard. It was up for an even shorter time.
Fry's and Microcenter have been getting the docks and you can reserve them for in-store pickup, if you have a store nearby.

I love Android to death, but it has nowhere near the flexibility or software support of Linux proper, OS X or Windows. Take that with an implicit "yet" but there's a long way to go. Also, not a fan of the locked-down default nature (my android devices get unlocked in a hurry).

And I wasn't dissing the Transformer per se, I was (belatedly) chiming in on the comment that netbooks have no purpose now that there are tablets. Well, the Transformer with a real keyboard makes some ground there, but for most tablets are poor laptop replacements. The business model may not be supportable, but there's an certainly a role for them.

Unfortunately no. I'm in Buffalo, NY. Closest would be a Microcenter several hours out.

As has been mentioned in the thread, the likely reason netbooks are stalled is because companies are looking forward to hybrid like the Transformer - both with Android, as well as Win8 next year.

They've all but given up on Win7 since there's a lack of x86 processors that offer a good enough performance/battery ratio at this time. By the time they hit, Win8 will nearly there, and it offers a real touch UI as well ARM support which opens up tons of other SoC offerings.

Regardless we were bitching about your usage 'real OS', since it's vague, ambiguous, and has negative connotations.

Fair enough. I am not a fan of closed "ecosystems" (hate that term) and don't really like the way the consumer tech is going. Most of the tablet market bugs me becuase it's limted functionality relative to a general computing platform + an increase in price. I get that the touchscreens are higher-res and that they don't come cheap, but the touch interface is worse than a keyboard for many tasks and the loss of general computing ability is a fairly major loss, IMHO. Consider that people get excited about Flash or an update to an app like YouTube when on a general computing playfor there would be more options right out of the gate.

I'm sure it will end up somewhere reasonable, but right now the market/niche is really annoying.
