Elder Scrolls Online Beta (PS4/Xbox One) starts tomorrow

Thanks for the detailed impressions! Makes me more excited for the console release!

Your welcome and to the other person, thanks for the comments.

I will post some more as I get a little farther in the game. There are some really impressive areas that I want to see how they look compared to the PC version.

part of me wishes Sony would have made it so PS+ members could get into the Beta as well

I'd ask for a spare NA PS4 code but I don't have anything to exchange for it other than just being grateful...plus there are a lot of other people in this thread that deserve one before me judging by them not getting their emails yet with codes

Actually yea. Instead of a code just let us know how the PS4 version runs. We've heard the X1 impressions already!

Really good? I mean graphics look great, solid 30fps and seems 1080p but I also don't know what I'm talking about with technical stuff.

It just runs really smooth and I haven't noticed any dips in framerate so..yeah. I tried to Share Play with a friend but it's blocked so I streamed it on Twitch for him to see and he was marking out how much it looks like a Elder Scrolls/Skyrim game.

He's giving me shit now on my phone to get back on and stream it again. lol

Just to add further but I can't remember the old PC/Mac beta started you in First or Third person view but here it starts off in FPV and right away the controls just feel nice and smooth. A lot of that opening area has changed since I last played it too so that was cool.

EDIT: I'll probably start streaming it again for anyone curious:

I'm downloading the PS4 version now and will stream tomorrow night. I'll link in here when I do. I'm more than happy to answer questions, etc. as I've played the game quite a lot.

I don't have a camera but will have my mic hooked up.

As I stated earlier in the thread PS4 is fine, same as Xbox One without a detailed technical analysis its hard to tell them apart. Good FPS for both which is ultra important here and I don't see either console owner being unhappy regardless of version if they like these kinds of games.

That wound will never heal but this is a good pain reliever.

I played on on the 360, so I'm good. But yeah, I am still looking at this as just a new Elder Scrolls like the others. As that is what it feels like, only it's also online and lets you equip more abilities.

Thank you Hawk269. Great read (Xbox One impressions).
I'm surprised not many people here received codes, including myself; I signed up early for the Xbox One without luck. Good to hear the positive impressions.

Really surprised how good the performance is so far on the Xbox One. Game doesn't look that that much worse than it does on my pc, and the controller support with UI is really well done.

It's super rad of them to offer a discount on the console version for PC owners.

So is the consensus positive for the console versions? I played back on PC back in the day and have this pre-ordered to play on consoles with some friends. Everything is looking and running good?

I am in love with this game. <3

Yeah, I am not sure why they limited it so much. I know of a few PC ESO players that also registered for Console Beta and they did not get a code. What I did find weird in my case, I got 2 emails asking me about my console preference and region. The emails were 3-4 days apart, so not sure if that had anything to do with it.

I did get to play a few more hours of the game and they really did a fantastic job. I been going off the beaten path and using the roads for protection to get to some higher level areas just to see if frame rate holds up in the different parts of the world and so far it has been pretty damn solid. What is nice is the foliage and the little things like rats, birds, insects and stuff crawling around and flying around are all intact from the PC version. I was thinking they would have had to cut back on some of the smaller details to maintain frame rate or resolution, but they pretty much are giving you the exact same game as if you were running it on ultra or very high on the PC.

The Draw Distance is actually really good, not of course as maxed out in the PC version, but what they did do is give it a pretty damn good distance so it does not feel like the world is hanging on a cliff waiting for more detail to load. I did see some objects fading in and/out however, but nothing major. Most larger set pieces don't do this, it is smaller things.

I am finding the menu's/controllers and just the whole set up very well done and they really made it feel even more like Skyrim than the PC version. There are even some things fixed that are not fixed in the PC version. A simple example and while it may sound kind of dumb, but in one area there was always this one Rune Stone that was nestled between 2 tree branches in the PC version that even since Beta you could never retrieve. You typically walk up to them, hit a button and your character retrieves the stone, but even after reporting it over year ago, it still persist. In the console version, they just removed the Rune Stone from the trees and called it a day. While it is a small thing, I appreciate the fix.

I am also finding the lock picking much better with a controller and controller vibration. It is a lot better. My one concern is that the Console versions do not have a Chat box for typing in if you want to sell something or request help to fight a world boss etc. It uses voice chat, for the proximity you are in. On the PC you have a way to use a Zone chat where your text is broadcasted to the entire Zone. This came in handy when you were out in the wilderness and there was a world mini-boss and you can just ask for help and people would teleport of come over to help. On console, you will have to hope that someone is in the proximity of the area you are in and hope they have a headset and they help. For me, selling goods, linking the item in the chat box was a easy way to broadcast you are selling something. It seems in the console version earthier you sell your items in a Guild Store or you run around talking into your headset if any one wants to buy your item.

What made the chat box better was that you could link the item you are selling or wanting to buy, which then allowed others to click on it to see what it was and if interested they would buy or sell. On Console, I see that this may be a problem. Since the game is not live and there are not a ton of people on, perhaps it will work out, but to me it seems like an odd thing to remove from the game since both consoles can have a keyboard attached to use for such things as chatting or linking items into the chat box. We will see how it works out, but for me it would of been nice to have the option to have a chat box for those that prefer not to use voice. I just can imagine people spamming the voice channels with "Anyone want to buy my Wood, I am sporting Wood and I need to unload it". We will see!

Played it on PS4 for a little while last night and streamed it on Twitch. Main thoughts are:

- Controls work much better than expected, and helps make it feel a lot like Skyrim
- Combat is OK but then ES games always had pretty dodgy combat, and this is an MMO!
- Graphics are very good. Pretty constant 30FPS. Only problem is that, despite it looking very crisp in 1080p, the game looks a little flat and 'MMO-like' in place. Weirdly, it's a bit step up from the console version of Skyrim, but somehow feels less dense.
- I saw a lot of draw distance fog which, to be honest, I didn't think even existing any more.
- UI is pretty good, no real problems so far. Levelling up your skills isn't as clear as it could be but still fine.
- Questing is very slick, and while lore fans can spend a long time chatting to NPCs/reading books etc, if you just want to bash through a load of quests you can really rip through.

Given the initial backlash, the developers have clearly put a lot of effort into making this feel like an MMO version of Skyrim, which is does. I think it's a credit to them that they've turned this around so well. Not going to be anything ground-breaking, but given the limited pool of console MMOs, I think a lot of people are going to have a lot of fun with this game.

Someone should tell them to enable AF.

To be honest... I feel like those screens make the game look worse that it actually does. As I played it actually looked awesome, on screens it looks just... ok. Somehow reminds me of Mario Kart 8 which is really not made for screenshots but look awesome in action.

So... any PS4 #neogaf guild already? :D

The PC version doesn't have AF.

I played some more of this and god damn, they pulled it off. I have 488 hours on the PC version, but it feels fresh on console. It actually feels Elder Scrolls.

By the way, having played this back to the 2013 betas I can tell you why it has a bad rep - it launched terribly on PC. The PC launch was basically the year long console beta. When I say one patch was 25gb and the entire PC download was 30gb, it should show how much they had to fix and rework post launch.

Are the characters interchangeable with the PC version? Say I buy this game now for PC, will I be able to continue playing on PS4 with the same character?

I'm actually finding myself reasonably tempted to give this a buy seeimg as it's not a monthly subscription anymore. Will definitely wait until the reviews come out first!

As far as I remember there is a payed service to transfer your pc character to your console.
Alright, cool, thanks.

btw.: Now that they dropped the monthly subscription, how do they actually make money with this game? Are the paid services in the game intrusive?

I played for a few hours tonight. It certainly scratched my Elder Scrolls itch. It feels a lot like Skyrim, though prettier in most ways. Having just come off of Bloodborne it took me a bit to get used to the combat. It just doesn't feel like you are hitting the enemy with and weight. I know these games aren't known for its combat but it's really quite noticeable. Very little strategy in how you attack areas, it's just spamming buttons and running backwards a lot. Because of how uncomfortable melee is, I have switched to projectiles in 3rd person. I felt the combat improved from that point on.

The exploration though is top notch. So many things to do and quests to complete. I was surprised how long I played tonight, it reminded me how hours would pass when I played oblivion or Skyrim. It's just feels like and Elder Scrolls game, which I like.

There are optional monthly subscriptions and cosmetic microtransactions in the game. Didn't notice any pay2win like things yet. It just seem level faster and gain the premium currency. I'm fine with that.

Another preorder added! yay :D Btw. voice acting is actually really great in this game, especially for an mmo.

Are there many basic fetch / kill quests? How is high level gameplay? Enough to do?

Been playing it the whole day, and pretty much finalized what characters (I'm an altholic :x) I'm creating at launch. Can anyone who played/plays this on PC confirm that the chests in Coldharbour are once per day per account? And what are the timers on those if someone before you loots them?

Additional:

Damn the game looks really really good, but I think I have a headache now on how shiny Coldharbour was. o.O

I'm glad to see that impressions seem overall pretty positive so far. Bring on release so I can get lost in an Elder Scrolls game again.

I am sure PC game does have AF. I'm in-game right now and it's there. Do you mean the console versions doesn't have any AF?

Yes, you also get a copy of the game for console. However, you had to have signed up before June or July 2014 (can't remember which) in order to be eligible.

They have an optional sub where you get some coins every month for their online store, a 10%xp bonus and free DLC while your sub is active. Going forward for people who never sub, they are still gonna release expansion packs/DLC for non subscribers but it's going to be substantial stuff like new zones and shit. Since there's no DLC yet there is zero reason to sub unless you want some coins for their store than maybe it's worth it for 1 month.

Oh, I meant there's no AF options on PC. On my settings it doesn't even AF activated, not sure how to.

Yea, there isn't an option in the game but you can customize the settings to have it. Make sure your User config file in Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\live has SET MAX_ANISOTROPY "3".

Or you can also set it in your video card drivers.

HooYaH, thanks for that.

One thing I'll say - I'm not sure if it's only beta signups from 2013, or the big download size (56gb on Xbox One!), but I see very few people in the beta. The first city in AD had 2 people in it this morning, and I hung around for an hour.

If someone is interested in comparison to the xbox one video. I uploaded an unedited ps4 (via share function) video to youtube.

Performance is actually really great. Didn't see any slowdowns yet. UI is typical for elder scrolls games, not so great, but once you get them... its fine.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eb0IMlzN1Ew

EDIT: Question: Does YT first edit the video before it shows the final quality or will it stay that compressed? Doesn't look that bad actually :(

Thanks a lot, that looks pretty cool actually, can't wait to get my hands on this :D

My first impression on the X1 version are kinda good. It performes well and looks good. The only difference from the Pc version, as i recall correct, are more blurry ground textures and a lower view distance. Nothing too game breaking of course.

What are the chances they will open this to the public on the last day of the beta
Zero.

Whereas I think their PS4 outing is quite nice, the game looks incredibly empty and hollow at times. There are no atmospheric effects anywhere. It really reminds me of the very first iterations of WoW - that one had a similar bleak geometrical feel to it. But that was due to technical limitations back then. This just looks boring.

yeah, i think they did a bad porting in this case.

bad graphics and dull atmosphere... nothing comparating with PC (and i'm not talking about textures)

these screens are taken from pc beta that i've played (no maxed)
