Embargo on PS4 UI and Store busted, Greg Miller to share details

I get that, but at the same time we still don't even have the option to properly sort a list of games on the PS3 after seven years of waiting and asking for a simple alphabetical option.

Are you sure about that? I have a games folder on ps3 and that list is in alphabetical order..unless I imagined that

I would have bugged Shuhei about it, but he was sitting at a table with Kojima and Cerny, and I really didn't want to be the weirdo stranger who walked up and started yelling "your interface sucks!" *heh*

That is literally the most intimidating table I've heard heard of. Was there an aura around it?

Has some kinks, but nothing that can't be patched later on. I generally like the design, seems slick and usable.

Now it's a question of when their updates will begin rolling out. I'll say about a year before the majority of grievances get addressed.

Wait, hang on. Content sorted by folders, go into folder, sort the contents of that folder alphabetically? And this is under the Games tab?

If that feature is now actually there, I swear on everything that I know that the PS3 was missing that option was years, and it has to have been a very recent update that added that. Otherwise, I am completely insane, because it's been one of the fixes I've most wanted.

I am totally willing to look like a complete moron if it means that feature is now indeed there.

Edit: Dammit I was so excited to think they'd finally put in the option. *cries*

Nope, you are right:

Edit: oops, I see it's already been pointed out.

Given their track record on Vita UI, I'm not worry, things will get fix sooner or later.
I guess library is everything you own in 3 category "games, media, app"
and you can chose what app or game you want to show on main screen that you use frequently.

but the Vita's UI is horrendous

I'd kill for something more Android/iOS looking - every time I look at that thing I want to gouge my eyes out

It's disappointing to here the game management could be messy, but Vita shipped without folders and that was patched in so there is certainly reason to believe that will be improved over time.

Not to be combative, but it also sounds a bit like what I've come to think of as "game journo problems", that is to say issues that arise disproportionately for games journalists because the way they use gaming hardware is pretty different from 99% of users. I remember at the Vita launch there were complaints about how hard it was to know what cartridge you had inserted at a given time. Now, that's a valid issue that was addressed pretty quickly in firmware updates, but it's also true that the vast majority of Vita owners hadn't bought the entire launch lineup on day one so they could pop each game in for 10 minutes at a time creating a mass of unorganized game icons.

Likewise the number of people who are going to own so many PS4 games in the short term that the list becomes unmanageable is incredibly tiny, and perhaps those who have such a problem should recognize it as a result of their privileged position and not as some kind of corporate catastrophe on Sony's part. If a year from now when people have large collections thanks to PS Plus and Sony have not improved things, maybe then it will be time to raise a ruckus.

I have to agree with you, I don't think it's as severe a problem to have at the moment, if it actually ends up being one. This is something that could be, if need be, solved with a firmware update. I think if this is the type of issues people are having with the OS now, then that could be considered a good problem to have, since these are problems that can be ironed out. I'm also sure that out of all the priorities they have to meet for launch, alphabetizing is not going to be the top priority at this critical juncture of the consoles timeline, but maybe it's included with the firmware 1.50 or maybe it isn't...

Essentially, I don't feel it would be unfair to give sony the benefit of the doubt and to give them some time if it isn't going to be available at launch, but I think the tweets could of been conveyed with a more tact approach... Seemed to get people really riled up initially.

I wouldn't just like to separate alphabetically or throw in a folder but actually organize what I want. For example, a game I know I'll be going to at random moments throughout my ownership, say, Final Fantasy XIV, I want pinned right there at the start. Then 2-3 other recent games im playing can follow after, and then I want to have the rest in folders, separated by indie downloads and big disc games.

Obviously not everyone would want what I described, people have their own experiences/preferences/wants, so really ultimately the OS should provide for heavy customization.

A small thing, but Engadget reports that with facial recognition you can apparently also nod at the camera to indicate you want to login. That or hold the ds4 in view. I wonder how robust the former will be.

Okay, so for anybody who cares about what I was hinting at earlier. And feel free to be all "OMG who the hell cares about that?!"

Also, let me be clear: this comes from having the UI demonstrated for me, and from asking questions of Sony folk during that demonstration. I have not used the PS4 that I was given as part of today's events as of this point. So, I'd love for some of my problems with the UI to be fixable with system options (either already there or added later).

So, that main strip of titles that serves as the most notable way to get to your content. Your games go there, items like Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited go there, options like your Library, the web browser, and a few other things go in there.

All of your games go there. Of course, this lead me to ask, "So what happens when you have, say, a hundred games?" Because it wouldn't take long for that list to become one super long horizontal line of content to wade through.

For now, it seems that that's how it's going to be. I was told that, as of now, you can't hide items from this list. The list already had that Library option, so why not have the list be either the disc you've got in the machine, or games you've specifically pinned? It reminds me of how the PS3 originally was, where it dumped all of your games under the Games tab and called it a day.

My other frustration? On the machine I was shown, those items are sorted by use. NO. I hate hate that. (To be fair, this is becoming a disgusting industry trend that extends beyond Sony and game consoles.) I'm really hoping that there will be an option in the OS that can set this to be sorted alphabetically, but I've also been waiting for the ability to sort folder contents alphabetically on the PS3 for years now. Why do you hate alphabetization Sony? :(

My frustration is that this is another example of how I feel like, sometimes, companies build UIs that work great when you've purchased 4-5 things, but quickly fail the more you purchase. If things work exactly as they did for the demonstration today, and there's no options for better organization, I hope enough people complain to Sony for them to realize that this is something that needs to be better ASAP.

Again, these are early impressions from a UI/system demonstration today. I would be happy to be wrong in my panic over any of this. *laughs* There's a lot I liked about the interface, but other instances (like the above) where it unfortunately feels like a 1.0 user interface, and I always get very bitchy when companies make a UI advancement and then lose it when doing a major interface update. (Sony, of course, is far from the only one who does this.)

Also, I harassed Grace Chen.

Wait, really? I assumed that was just a 'recent activity' thing like on Xbox, so you can quickly get back to stuff you've used, and there would be a separate page/list somewhere for your games, another for apps etc. I was curious where those were, because I didn't see examples in any videos so far, but I assumed they just weren't shown.

I'd also like to know how you see games you've bought but aren't installed. Do you have to go to the store, and if so, is there a simple view that shows me just the PS4 games I own that aren't on my PS4 right now? Ideally I'd like that stored locally, but I'd be ok with going online to see, providing it isn't just a massive list of everything I buy, including PS3 content which I can't play.

Don't care for folders but i hate how games can't be listed alphabetically. It's simple, keep the first icon as your most recent with everything after in alphabetical order. I honestly don't get how they can miss that. The games list should go vertical like the ps3. Makes no sense to have EVERYTHING on one bar. Even if the bar is super fluid, that's just too much unnecessary scrolling.

With that said i'm content with what I've heard so far. By the time i have a decent digital collection most of this will probably be fixed.

And that is the big worry. As it is, the same download list is used for all items downloaded on PSN. That 500GB HDD is going to fill up incredibly fast, and then it will be time to have to do data management, and the download list is unusable for that.

The Vita does the same thing where you only see the games you have installed on the system. That means that you have to dive into the cesspool that is the download list and look through every single piece of content that you have ever downloaded to find Vita games. The Vita has a similar problem of filling up fast, so you have to do a lot of data management, and it is a complete nightmare. You have to personally remember what games you have at all times, and then specifically seek out that game in a list of thousands of items. I am beyond worried that it is going to work the same way on PS4, and if it does, then I am completely dumbfounded that Sony could be so shortsighted when it comes to a digital games library.

This is the start of a new generation where they are trying to push people towards digital downloads as the primary means of getting games, and a system like this will only work towards keeping people away from digital downloads. Steam only works because it is simple and easy to use the library.

I really hope to be proven wrong on this, but I am extremely nervous.

They eventually got this so right on the PS3 (and the Vita's not bad either)... why are we moving backwards on something so simple? And something that's such a major part of a system they want us to buy digitally for?

I think the vita UI is crazy ugly (the bubbles part, task/app switching looks nice). I was hoping with that last big ps4 / vita update they would have changed the UI to look like the ps4 but apparently that's not happening. :(

I see something i don't like from the @cjcool804 pictures.
It seems like there is no Audio Multi-Output option, so you can't extract audio from HDMI and optical at the same time.

I swear that I recall hearing that was the case long ago, but can't find anything now. If so, that means my A40 Mixamp isn't going to work at the same time and I will have to switch the output setting each time I want to use them vs the external/TV speakers.
