Emulator Consoles: PS3 vs Wii vs Original Xbox ?

It's not what's keeping them from being ported but to say it's lethargic when a permanent hack hasn't even been released yet is stupid. Any emulator released won't have usb access which is a semi-big deal to a lot of people. Once IOSU hack is out it will take off. So yeah, you don't know what you're talking about.

Lethargy: 1.
the quality or state of being drowsy and dull, listless and unenergetic, or indifferent and lazy; apathetic or sluggish inactivity.

The currently available hack has been available well over 6 months with very little effort shown for it beyond backups, piracy, and tech demos.

Compare this to the vita hacking scene, which had a working copy of retroarch running within a week of a serious hack being released.

Apathetic, sluggish, indifferent, unenergetic, the literal definition of lethargic.

This is NOT an insult to the people still working on the Wii U scene... but it IS the current state of the Wii U hacking scene. It's actually, at this point in time, a better use of your time to hack the virtual Wii in the Wii U if you want access to emulators and what not than it is to bother with the Wii U side unless your goal is to backup your physical collection.

Now, if you disagree with me, that's fine... But don't try to insult my intelligence. It's baffling how defensive you got over my simply stating an honest assessment of the Wii U scene.

A PC that boots to retroarch is the easiest thing in the world. Sure you need to spend some time setting it up, but this will be true of all those consoles also. A basic PC will allow you to do so much more, and my understanding is single thread performance is the most important for emulators, and so a cheap cpu will do the task.

I have been using an OG Xbox and a Saturn controller adapter. This is a very good setup, running MAME like this, through RGB, gives pretty good results.

Haven't tried other consoles because I pretty much own them all.

Speaking of Wii, I'm currently setting up my Wii U for emulation and GameCube games, but I'm finding it annoying that I have to use the wii remote to start Wii mode, and that GX USB Loader makes me use it as well. Is there any way of getting it working better with a pro controller?

Raspberry pi 3 with retropie or recalbox is the best option, recently i bought one and old consoles run like a charm.

Setting up a PC for 240p is significantly more work than setting up a Wii, though.

Unless you don't care about 240p, but why use a CRT if that's the case?

There may be but I don't know of any at the moment.

I think it is basically mandatory since it is loading through the Virtual Wii.

Get a Raspberry Pi and run RetroPie, it uses RetroArch and can be used with CRT's with composite signal. It's the best emulator experience I've ever had. Cheaper than a PS3 or even a Wii.

Heck I even built an arcade machine for all those games because it works so damn well.

Cant you get a daughter board that fits on the IO pins and give RGB out via VGA socket??

I've been thinking about picking up the NVidia Shield Tablet K1 instead for my retro needs. It has USB ports, HDMI out, and has really good specs. I've been wanting a tablet anyways for Netflix, and just general use.

For $199 this seems like the ideal option for me. I could use it on the go or at home hooked up to my TV. Anything I'm missing here? It was either this or making a RetroPie.

Sorry to bump this but I'd like to ask the same general question as the OP. I already own most of the hardware mentioned in this thread except the Pi, and I'd just like to know which process is the quickest end-user experience.

I do have a PC hooked up to a TV with Retroarch on it, but I've honestly found setting up Retroarch to be a pain. Getting the right control configurations and the CRT filters I like is a bit too much hassle for when I want to quickly boot up games. Updating Retroarch doesn't feel like a smooth experience either. Any ways to simplify the process would be welcome.

For alternatives I own a PS3 and a Wii and I'm thinking of hacking the Wii whenever I get around to it. I still have a lot of official stuff I want to play on the PS3 though, mostly PS1 Classics actually.

What about emulation on handhelds? I have a PSP-1000 and a spare 3DS. I still have a lot of official content left to play on the PSP.

I use 3DS because portability. Runs 8-bit, 16-bit, the odd simple PSX game, and a bunch of 90s arcade stuff.

But it's still RetroArch so it's a pain. If I'm serious about a game I'll try to inject the ROM into a Virtual Console title, which gives a better user experience as well as better battery life.

On a RPi, you could try one of the pre-configured retro images that do away with the RetroArch interface. RetroPie for example: https://retropie.org.uk/
