Engadget: what about the Wii U?

The day journalists collectively decided that beating up the Wii U was in bad taste.

I wonder if its down to the fact that the XBox One is as bad as people were worried about with fee to play microtransactions, not to mention censorship from skype and a massive step back in their friends/party online ecosystem. The fact both PS4 and XB have also had pretty mediocre launch lineups, and the Wii U is able to hold its own visually means the hyperbolic proclamations of next gen saviour machines hasnt come to pass.

Why are you asking if it bothers me? The discussion is about the following statement:
"As the PlayStation and Xbox continue to evolve, they're moving out of the game console space and into another category entirely, leaving Nintendo as the only major contender"

Nintendo still focuses primarily on gaming. Those ads show that Microsoft and Sony don't, it's quite simple and your look at expansion in other areas only supports my argument. Whether you think it's the proper route to go or not is irrelevant.

And here we have the argument that the lack of media features is somehow a benefit.

First of all, media features are nothing new. Console developers such as Sony have always tried to add on multimedia bullet points to purchase incentives beyond their respective game libraries. More than ever, this is important to Sony because MS now shares the Bluray feature in addition to inevitably sharing a large portion of the game library the PS4 will have. These companies are just looking for ways to have their game consoles stand out, in addition to the exclusives they'll be hyping.

If you want to argue that because Sony or MS offer a growing number of multimedia features they are somehow providing less of a gaming console, then prove the latter. Perhaps you can argue that Sony is scaling back it's first party entries because of certain studios being shutdown, but then you'd have to be sure to take into account the place of mid-budget games in the industry right now. Or perhaps you want to argue that either is less enthusiastic about securing 3rd party support? Where is the lack of game support? Because "they advertise multimedia capabilities" doesn't prove that.

What?!? How in the world is the PS4 leaving the game console space. It is being promoted as THE gaming platform. It is where you will find the best versions of 3rd party games while Nintendo is losing 3rd party support faster than the speed of light. The only reason to buy a Wii U at the moment is to play Nintendo games.

If price is your concern then buy a 360 or PS3 for less and have access to a much larger selection of games than the Wii U can offer. You can even buy them used for even more savings.

This is the result of the standard launch hype that always precedes a new console launch. Inevitably, the console has technical issues, rushed launch games, and a library that's far more limited than the mature system it's succeeding. The media then reacts with disappointment that continues until sometime during the following year when the games that justify the console's existence start coming out.

It took 12 months for Nintendo, although its future is still marred by the fact that its great releases are destined to pretty much only come from Nintendo. For the PS4 and XBO it'll probably come next Spring/Summer once Titanfall, Infamous, Watch Dogs, Ground Zeroes, and The Witcher 3 hit.

i disagree, but lets see how things go for the next year.

Consider Monster Hunter PSP. All it took was one game to ignite platform sales and an ecosystem grew out from under that umbrella.

You only need to catch lightening in a bottle once to build momentum.

What is this article trying to say?

"The Wii U has had poor sales"

"The 3DS will save Nintendo if the Wii U completely fails"

"Gaming is the focus of the Wii U, not TV services"

Just a lot of bland stuff everybody agrees on.
