Enough with the Doom & Gloom Xbox threads but I feel like they're buying publishers as a solution to a problem Gamepass created

The console market has been read wrong a few times like when the Wii U wasn't selling well everyone was predicting that it was the end of the home console because of mobile gaming .

I feel like MS read the market wrong when releasing Gamepass so soon . Their thinking was that the younger generation raised up on mobile gaming wouldn't be willing to pay $59 / $69 on new games but somehow we ended up in an era where it's normal for big games to sell 10 , 15 , 20 & even 30 million now. So if you're Xbox watching games sell 20 million on other platforms when you bet against people buying full price games the best thing would be for you to own the IPs that's selling millions on these other platforms.

They are buying devs for game pass yes.

But it’s for turning their Xbox service into an all in one games / movies / Amazon type shopping.

And just like Amazon prime they will have to make the place more expensive and riddled with ads to make it viable, people will leave and a new company that’s willing to bleed money for a decade will take its place. Don’t know how MS will turn this into a profitable endeavor.

Stop blaming gamepass with everything.
You kids are way too reactionary.

MS/Xbox wants to have to their own content studios after atrocious Xbox one content.

If MS wants content, they can simply do EA deals with every developers and have a lot of content for gamepass.

Bruh this is literally a doom and gloom thread. It's obvious that's what the publishers were for, it's not rocket scientist. Even Gamepass money can't get devs interested in Xbox and that's a HUGE problem

Reactionary? I'm the person who said this would happen years ago

So much over analyzing of Gamepass. It's really just a more convenient rental service because of the ability to download or stream. All those big budget games that sell millions on PS or Switch can be rented on Gamefly. You can get a free trail and play the new Zelda right now rather than paying $70. Gamely Zelda of the Kingdom

Actually no it isn't because owning the IPs is a smart thing .
Yeah but if you can't get them interested in developing for you what does buying you solve? Phil basically confirmed that those acquisitions were to try to get people to Xbox through content starving

People are not seeing that.
MS lacked first party studios that compete with PS and Nintendo. And because starting devs is a risky business, they went with easy way and buy publishers/devs that have proven track records.

MS/Xbox still need to provide content to their system before gamepass.

Ignore the title...this vid actually brings up a really good point about Game Pass, and how it's not helpful to establishing an identity for Xbox the way Achievements did. Achievements added something new to the gaming space, built on top of the multiplayer-centric model MS fostered with Xbox Live, was actually a feature ingrained into the games themselves, and was something specific to the gaming medium.

Game Pass offers none of that; it's just another delivery mechanism for consuming gaming content, but directly apes a subscription model from other mediums (movies/tv, music, productivity software etc.) to do it. And, Game Pass itself offers no enhancements to the gaming experience of the games present, nor does it add to the multiplayer/community-centric model that services like Xbox Live helped make mainstream.

Them buying big publishers is just a band aid and not even one they can sustain given the troubles they have getting their current stable of studios fully organized and well-oiled. Buying publishers won't help Microsoft re-establish a strong brand identity with Xbox, which is what they need in order to stand on their own strongly instead of being in Sony & Nintendo's shadow. IMO, they need to do a DEEP long look into the brand identity and gaming culture they had with OG Xbox and early 360, take the best aspects of those, and replicate them.

But a lot of times it feels like MS is almost ashamed of those eras of Xbox, for the dumbest of reasons. That or the current management just don't understand what gave those eras of Xbox strong brand identity even in the presence of Sony and Nintendo. It's probably a mix of both.

Even EA doesn't do day and date on EA Play for their biggest games and even EA Play Pro is limited to PC where EA doesn't make the most of their money on titles like Jedi Survivor.

Mod edit: this thread is saying nothing original or nothing new that isn't being discussed in the many other doom and gloom threads the op references.
