Enslaved, new "first look" and screens

UE3 isn't doing anyone any favors.
That engine needs to die in a fire.
Are you retarded?

The lighting on the UDK is pretty good if you know how to use it. Also, foliage just got a HUGE improvement recently:

And the engine itself is incredibly user-friendly and pretty powerful. Saying it isn't doing anyone any favors is pretty much like saying "hey look, i'm an ignorant, laugh at me please".
If a game screams 'UE3' that's because the developer didn't spend enough time adapting the engine to their visuals or they just wanted to go with the 'basic' look (if that even exists..). Take a look at some pics on the last page (or this one if you have 100ppp).

Game looking good.

I've got Heavenly Sward and I didn't mind it. Looked great, but gameplay needed a touch more...something. Couldn't quite put my finger on it. Except FUCK that boss fight was shit.

This is looking nice, oh and to the chick in it? fap. FAP hard.

Really? I think it looks stunning, what is it people don't like about the look?

If this is the thread that I think it is then I've probably already said this, but it just doesn't gel together. It's like they took the characte design from one game, the enemy design from another and shoved them into the enviroments of a third. Even then, the lady looks quite realistic (and like Nariko) but the guy's this weird cartoony proportioned but realistically textured thing that just looks off.

The game is too colorful. We want our gunmetal grey, and dystopia brown.

Serious answer: I personally love the backgrounds, but the male character design seems to be all over the place. Someone else in the thread said it best. He looks like someone hit the random button in a character creator.

The worst thing about it is the color. It is urine stained. The piss color filter needs to stop.

I guess the reason I don't like it revolves around the piss ugly filter + UE3 engine rearing its ugly face again. Its basically gears + tekken? or something? I don't know how to describe it really lol. Its like a failured mix between tekken and gears and some tropical jungle/city environment. I guess in a one word response to why I don't like the look: Random.

It's just kinda looks like Ninja Theory knew some people are tired of the gritty metal Unreal 3 look, and simply wanted to make something different, because of that only. Thus they went completely overboard.

You know, rather than making something genuinely unique looking so it can service the story/world.

Looks like Tekken meets Bionic Commando meets Final Fantasy XII concept art. Some of the environments look awesome but the character designs/models look stupid.

I'm currently playing through Heavenly Sword currently. First time. I do feel that the level of ambition is right but I do feel that the game fails in certain regards. It takes some nice leaps forward but for every nice thing it does it also does another with painful mediocrity. I think the most painfully obvious thing they missed was the genre they're developing for requires alot of trial and dying and having unskippable lengthy cutscenes that takes ages to load before every bossfight was the most alarming designflaw.

Hopefully they've learned their lesson, it certainaly looks that way. I like the whole motion-capture & script push toward movies as it certainly increases the production values. And this looks very slick. Having Jin Kazuma and Nariko joining forces in a bright post-apocalypic future doesn't sound like a bad idea. Hopefully they'll deliver something extra. Regardless of metascore I'll be picking this up just to see how they're doing. :)

You actually can skip the cutscenes, it's just that they mask the loading times. If you skip it while the game is still loading you get a nice blank screen while you wait (but it's faster). I don't quite remember if there's an icon on screen that shows when it's done loading and you can skip the rest.

I'm mildly interested in this. Having played HS I think it was probably a better game that it would have been without Sony's assistance. Now that they're going at it alone... I need to see more.

Someone at Ninja Theory really knows how to make hot female models but I reaaaaally dislike the male design.
I like where they are going with the environment. A lot.
But the distance fogging seems wrong and the shadowing seems to be almost totally absent on anything far away. Whats up with that?

Wow, you can tell from screenshots that they don't service the story/world? are you a wizard?

There's a interview on Gametrailer.

I don't like the starting premise of the game, but I guess that is what the title means.

I mean, couldn't they have figured something else out other than one prisoner enslaving another?

Kind of wacky with her reprogramming a slave band.

I mean I wanted a strong Nariko like character, not some girl who has to use tricks to force some guy (who would probably help out a fellow prisoner anyway) to do her bidding.

And they seriously had to call him Monkey? Easy to remember I guess...

Is it just me or the main character basically a modern take on the Hanuman/Monkey King? He's got the pseudo tail, the staff that changed length, and the headband that gives him pain (hence "Enslaved"?).

http://g4tv.com/games/xbox-360/62775/enslaved/articles/70323/Enslaved-First-Impressions/

It’s a post-apocalyptic retelling of “Journey to the West,” the classic Chinese tale that’s been reinvented in a variety of ways, ranging from the PlayStation RPG Saiyuki to "Dragon Ball." In this revamp, the heroic Monkey still has an attachment to control his behavior, but in this case, it’s the good ol’ sci-fi “explosive collar,” which is always a reliable vehicle for driving the story.

After nukes have nearly wiped out humanity, North America’s population has reduced to 50,000, and is divided into distinct tribes: community and survivalists. Antoniades described the communes as “techno-hippie enclaves,” where humans have banded together to use technology to survive, repopulate and live in harmony with nature. Survivalists are nomadic and scattered. Monkey is very much a stoic survivalist. He’s captured by an android slaving ship bound for the west, a place where no humans return. He gets a slaving headband attached to his forehead, which controls his every movement at the penalty of death. Fortunately, Trip, a young commune member, is aboard the ship, and with her savvy, she manages to hack the slave ship and crash it over the remains of Manhattan. Trip’s not as strong as Monkey, but she’s clever enough to get them both off the ship in one piece. She’s also savvy enough to hack Monkey’s headband so that he’s forced to return her back to her homeland.

What a weird premise for a game. I don't know what audience they're making this game for but I for one think it looks pretty awful.

I think they're making it for an audience that's imaginative and prefers colorful artwork to drab greys and browns. Whether or not there are enough people like that out there for the game to sell well is another question. I guess we'll find out when it's released.

so this game is "running away from explosions" Simulation ?

Looks a lot better now.

Also, did ANYONE catch the huge Goku reference that guy is?? :D
I mean, the staff, the suggested "tail"... everything.

Goku is a reference to the Monkey King, which this game's main character is a direct line to.

Wait, is this supposed to be based on Saiyuki? I was going to make a joke about him looking like the Monkey King with the staff and everything...

I couldn't finish HS. I just couldn't. Serkis monkey head villian... and ho hum game play. /yawn.

This look very generic. Like gorgeous environments and brain dead gameplay. Also reminds me a lot of too human on some level.. We'll see.

Feel exactly the same way. I swear if I have to throw another fucking hat/shield into another gong I'm gonna RAGE. Seriously though I kept playing the thing just for the amazing cut scenes. HS really does have some of the most detailed and well animated cut scenes I have ever seen in a game to date. Plus the ending segment was pretty cool overall. But it sure as hell didn't make up for the mediocrity the rest of the game was composed of.
