Yeah.

I remember when old people would mock the way young people used "cool"... but I think those people/that attitude have died off :P
I think there's a period of adjustment with slang. We grew up with "cool" so it's perfectly natural to us. But it probably sounded retarded in its infancy when people were consciously using it to imitate other people and not because they had grown up with it in their vocabulary.

What if our future kids are saying "Poppa I just took an epic dump in my diaper." ? Do we ground them for a week, slap them in the back of the head, or just accept that it's a part of their fundamental vernacular?

Only if you do this mondo cool thing and look at the top 5 people to the left of your Facebook profile.

#1 - Will be your baby's momma.
#2 - Will wash their pants while having a large amount of money left in a pocket.
#3 - Is secretly a Brony.
#4 - Chews their nails, and spits them at people.
#5 - Laughs when people trip on ice.

More like:

#5-Got his kids circumcised

Seriously sick of "epic." I face-palmed today because "epic fail" was actually said in Persona 4. Made me sad.
Gonna go ahead and call that irony.

Also, you better not be insulting the Persona 4 dub. I will cut you.

Adding "i-" or "e-" is also awful.

Also, putting "-Gate" as a suffix drives me nuts, too.

I'll take "Epic" any day over those.

I think "i-" or "e-" generally work because they're short and to the point, i.e. e-mail.

"-gate" is lame though, that's been overused to the point it's lost any sort of weight.

I thought "Information superhighway" used to be hilarious, because it immediately let you know that whoever used it didn't have a clue about internet.

What's slang about it? It's never used in a way that defies the definition and it's a real word.
Pretty much what I was going to say. It's just increased use of its long-held definition.

You think so? "Epic" is a word of scale. Now it's used in an exaggerated way, which has basically perverted it's meaning. "Epic" has come to mean something cool to the new generation of people that use it carelessly.
Seems pretty much the same way words like great, outstanding, or exceptional are used.

Always feels weird on its own. Always feels a bit too nerdy for 'normal' slang, which doesn't help especially when it is overused.

I've been noticing a trend in general over the last 4-5 years where 4chan/internet crowd in general has become a very large trendsetting group for the mainstream and not just forums. The things 4chan creates has become more and more mainstream/known now, but by that time it's already considered old and outdated by internet standards.

Anyone remember that slang 'hella'? That's hella awesome, you're hella crazy etc.

That was so lame. Epic as a word can be used in appropriate situations, a friend of mine once told me Inception was epic when explaining what was so great about it. Didn't seem off or anything..

Picture the scene.

You're having a conversation with friends about great movies, and in your head you're thinking of classic slang like "All that and a bag of chips", "Da Bomb", "Dope", "Boomshakalaka", "bling-bling", "eat my shorts", "Fresh", "For shizzle my nizzle", "Phat", "Tight", "Know what I'm sayin?" Slang which redefined conversation and made strides in understanding and reflecting upon the human condition, as well as representing considerable advances in the technical aspects of the medium.

And then one of your friends says that the greatest slang words of all time is "Epic". 'I'm sorry?', you ask. Epic Fail, he says, and that he's said it a million times and it never gets old. Now, inside your head you're going nuts but you try to maintain your composure - so you don't get awfully angry, you just sit there and listen. In the meantime, another friend says that the best slang ever is "Chillin". Another pipes up and says that "Sup!?" is the best. It was better than "Whats up" and "Whaaaaazzupppp", he adds. Quite.

Or how about this. You're talking about texting and instant message, and your friend says that everything before the year 2000 is shit, and they got bored and with using "bling-bling" after 10 minutes. You tell them they need to try it again, the 90's has some amazing slang and words that are decades old and has mesmerised untold generations. Then they just look at you funny.

You talk about music and they think you mean Lil Wayne. You talk about television and they think you mean Jersey Shore. You talk about computer games, and they think you mean Call of Duty. You talk about fine cuisine and they think you mean the McGangBang.

At this point, is it right of me to look down upon such people? Should I just accept that not everyone received the same opportunities I did to learn about culture and history and art - and that consequently, I shouldn't judge them? How tolerant should one be of a friend's cultural idiosyncracies, and at what point should one say enough is enough and call them out on it?

Hella curious to hear if any of you ever go through this sort of thing. Ya dig?
